Hiya, does anyone know what makes a pregnancy be classed as high risk?

As a person I am a worrier and I'm terrified of the chance my pregnancy won't end well. I have my first midwife appointment in 2 weeks ( I will be 8 weeks one day from date if last period) and I was told to find out my family history.

My mums side:
Granddad had leukemia

My dad's side:
A dwarf cousin
A cousin with spinal biffida
My Grandma has diabetes
A second cousin has aspergers
An uncle with pulimary heart des ease
A second cousin born with a hole in her heart
Twins

Now dad has got a BIG family but jeez that's a lot of health stuff!!!!

I've not even learnt about my partners side yet!

Like I said I'm a worrier. I'm worried that I no longer feel sick constantly, but then I was worried I was feeling sick at 4/5 weeks. I worry when I get cramps, and believe it or not I worry when I don't! I panic if my boobs no longer feel sore, basically I've become a bit of a crazy pregnant lady.

I honestly don't think my baby will be born a dwarf (no offence to any dwarfs!) , but I'm panicking now as I forgot to take my folic acid today (mine you have to take with food and I can't stomach any not because of a mega bloat!) because my cousin has spinal biffida. With her tho my aunty took that morning sickness pill that caused all those problems, and I think my drawf cousins mum did also but links where never proved).

But would any of the above mean I would be a high risk pregnancy and get an early scan? It wouldn't half put my mind at ease.

It's my first pregnancy and I live with 3 men, I'm not working at the moment (had a great interview today for a 6 month contract fingers crossed) but I just have me, my worrying mind and google to fill my days at the moment. I'm driving myself insane! I just want a scan to tell me everything is going to be ok :(

I don't think any of those things are a cause for concern.

High risk is more about maternal weight, blood pressure, risks from previous pregnancies or deliveries etc.

Your midwife will ask about relevant medical history at your booking in appointment. Try not to worry in the meantime.

Congratulations!

The only ones that they will want to know about are the grand parents. However, a grandparent with diabetes probably won't cause any extra issue - you may get gestational diabetes, but it's probably the same risk as anyone else (and not that many people get it), and it's only temporary, and manageable. The leukaemia is the other thing, and a grandparent having it probably doesn't add much risk. These two things will most likely still leave you as low risk.

My pregnancy is considered high risk because I have a heart condition that results in abnormal heart rhythms, and I am under the haemophilia clinic so I am risk of haemorrhage and will require a platelet transfusion.

The history my midwife gained from me related to immediate family members only, which was mainly my parents. She didn't even really take into account my grandparents. The midwife will screen you for any high risk complications at your booking appointment and will refer you to the consultant if necessary. In the mean time, try not to worry.. If there are any risks they will be dealt with in due course.

Try not to worry. My mw was only interested in my parents and siblings. Didn't ask about my husband, as they can't be certain who is the father (charming!)

None of those sound like conditions that would cause a pregnancy to be high risk.

I know it sounds like a lot of health conditions when you write them all down, but honestly I think most people have that kind of number of health problems in their family, I certainly do and my midwife had no concerns.

If you're feeling anxious, you can discuss that with the midwife. You could also look at booking a private reassurance scan, they're available in most areas and aren't that expensive.

Slight side issue but if you have an elevated risk of spins bifida it is best to try and take some folic acid even when you can't face the full prenatal hits. You can get tiny folic acid pills from boots that don't need to be taken with food. Apart from that just try not to worry. You sound normally anxious but not high risk to me.

Calm down! There will be medical problems in most/all families, particularly when you've cast the net wide enough to include second cousins. Just wait and see what the midwife says.

My grandparents and my mum all have type 2 diabetes. I don't have GD yet (36 weeks). In the nicest possible way, step away from the internet and try and forget about all things pregnancy related for a little bit :) It will last long enough, I promise you.

bassingtonffrench · 30/01/2014 10:32

when I went through the booking in appointment at 12 weeks they asked me about family history and I tried to tell them about my grandparents, cousins etc and they were NOT INTERESTED! They only take into account parents and siblings (yourself and your partner). She cut me dead everytime I said "and my grandma had ...."

Please stop worrying. As far as I know Spina bifida is very rare these days. Minor Holes in heart are very common and most people don't know they have them. Twins is mostly random.
