Hi all, I searched the whole of mumsnet (and Google) last week but found nothing reassuring on this so I've been moved to post for the first time in my life just in case this happens to anyone else.
On my 16-week midwife appt my urine sample revealed high protein levels (4+). The midwife terrified me by talking about admitting me to hospital and possible liver damage and/or pre-eclampsia and then told me to come back next week, when she'd have results back from the lab.
After a fraught week, several sleepless nights and a few terrifying google sessions, I went back today to find out there is... absolutely nothing wrong with me or the baby (phew!). The lab results came back NAD (nothing abnormal detected). The midwife (a different one, it's never the same one twice) said it was probably just a contaminated sample and it could have been a bit of vaginal discharge (sorry - gross, I know!).
To be honest, I'm furious - I feel the first midwife should have been more reassuring and told me the more innocuous causes for high protein levels in a urine sample instead of immediately mapping out the worst case scenario. I might add that I am low risk, in perfect health, all my previous urine samples have been NAD and my blood pressure consistently in the normal range. I appreciate they need to always check, and should absolutely take every precaution, but I don't think a little reassurance would have compromised that.
Anyway, just in case this happens to you - don't work yourself into a panic. If your blood pressure is fine and you are otherwise healthy and feeling well, you probably are. Oh, and step away from google (at least until the results are back!).
