Crap! I've got to tell work today!

Even though I'm only 6weeks I've got to tell work for health and safety reasons as I work with dangerous substances. The thing is, everyone at work will immediately work it out and I didn't want anyone to know :( grrrr. Anyone else had similar experiences?

I've managed to avoid telling work yet however I intend on telling them between returning off annual leave and my 20 week scan in March. I've been shitting myself about telling them since I found out at a few weeks. Is it telling your employer you are worried about or is it that everyone will click?

I told work at 9 weeks and they were fantastic relax and reassured me loads. Don't be nervous and stay positive

TomatoandCheese · 29/01/2014 12:08

I had to tell my boss at 9 weeks - I'm on a temporary contract that ends at the end of May and he wanted to discuss options for creating a new role for me once this one finishes. I just couldn't have that conversation and not be honest with him! But I've managed to keep it from everyone else so far (now 11 weeks). Obviously you have to think of your health first, but I can see why you don't want everyone knowing so early. Is there no excuse you could use in the meantime so they don't work it out?

I haven't told work yet - 16 weeks! I'm building up the courage, problem is I'm still on probation so have to tell them before that ends. Good luck!

Lottiedoubtie · 29/01/2014 12:31

I'm working up the courage to tell my boss too. I'm only 8 weeks and I really wanted to wait for awhile but someone gossipy looked at me the other day and guessed (I'm in the throws of desperately trying to hide sickness) and I felt so shit I couldn't deny it.

Now got to tell the boss before he 'hears' from someone else. Angry

SweetPea86 · 29/01/2014 12:31

I told work at 5 weeks only because I was so ill and health and safety, I made it clear that I only wanted management to know untill my 12 weeks scan and they kept quite :)

amy246 · 29/01/2014 13:00

I just basically didn't want anyone to know, but they'll all work it out because my role will have to change quite dramatically. I haven't worked here that long and I don't want to annoy people :(

Sad their problem if they get annoyed, horrible but ridiculous, you can't plan your family around their feelings.

I've got an appt with the boss at 8.15 tomorrow, just hope I'm not actually puking at that moment...

When are you doing it?

captaincake · 29/01/2014 17:46

I had to tell management as soon as I found out myself due to health and safety. I waited until 7 weeks to have a private early reassurance scan then told all my colleagues. To be honest they had mostly all already guessed anyway. I would have much preferred to not tell anyone before 12 weeks but it just wasn't feasible. Having the early scan did reassure me a bit. As it turned out I wouldn't have been able to not tell them before 12 weeks anyway as I had awful morning sickness. Don't worry about annoying anyone!

KitKat1985 · 29/01/2014 18:14

I had to tell my boss straight away for health and safety reasons. I don't want everyone to know yet as I'm not quite 7 weeks yet, but a few trusted work colleagues know. To be honest with hindsight I'm relieved I told some people - at least they know why I'm struggling to stay awake most days and get some sympathy when I feel nauseous. Your boss though shouldn't tell anyone else you work with unless you want them to if you want to keep it quiet. xxx

MyNameIsWinkly · 29/01/2014 18:18

I had to tell work almost straight away, I'm (or was, rather) a front line police officer. Aside from the obvious risks, my ms kicked in right off the bat and car travel made it worse. When I had to pull over on the way to a call to puke in a bin more than once in one day I knew it wasn't going to work.

It was stressful having everyone guess straight away but worth it.

amy246 · 29/01/2014 18:51

Yay! Told them and they were ok with it. Phew! So nervous before tho! :) good luck to everyone else
