It's been done before...but talk to me about nappy bags?

Do you actually need them? Or are inserts that you can move from bag to bag better? I quite like the Storksak Elizabeth and the Pacapod Coromandel but was quite disappointed with the quality of the leather on the Storksak when I saw it in John Lewis. So I might look at buying an organiser of some sort to move between my normal bags. Does anyone care to share an opinion? Please assume budget is not a problem. What is the ideal when it comes to nappy bags? DH already has a bag he's planning to use so this one would be just for me.

I would get a specific bag to use rather than removable inserts, personally I wouldn't have been able to fit everything in a normal handbag - nappies, wipes, nappy bags, bottle, change of clothes, bib, plus all the things normally in my handbag! As baby gets older you need food, snacks, sippy cup as well. Plus, having had outfits covered in the contents of an exploded nappy that I've had to somehow get home, I would only use something with a wipe clean lining happens more frequently than you would care to imagine

I personally never got ok with changing bags. They were all either huge or the wrong shape so I Ci could never find anything. This time round I'm buying a longchamp le pliage large shoulder bag and using a Tintamar bag liner to give some structure. I've got a normal line anyway but you can buy special 'changing bag' ones which come with a few extra accessories. HTH!

I've always used a pink lining bag for my 3 dc and have purchased a new one for my 4th dc. I always manage to fit everything I need in one and even managed to get the one I wanted at a reduced price in John Lewis.

That's great, thank you ladies. Good spectrum! I think I'll make wipe-clean a priority whatever I go with then...!

I bought a normal leather tote (I like a big handbag anyway) and have bought a changing bag liner to go in it. I've got the Boots free one to use if needed. In all likelihood I will buy a changing bag a few months in I would have thought when I have a better idea of my requirements. Thats why baby shopping is hard, you dont know what your preferences will be!

I always just used my normal bag. Few nappies & wipes, a muslin, maybe an extra babygro. When older a sippy cup, bib and little box of food too.
I didn't have a very sicky baby though and I was breastfeeding so I travelled pretty light.

I bought a simple wet bag like this for dirties- nowadays (baby is 16 months) I don't even take that out

wet bag

I'm going to buy a changing bag, got my eye on the pacapod mirano one. Not cheap but I'll be using it all the time for a couple of years

MrsVDB · 28/01/2014 19:55

I haven't had the baby yet (week overdue :( ) but will be starting with normal handbag and a travel changing mat that has pockets for nappies etc. just bought one if those wet bags (thanks wee) as that was my only concern

hubbahubster · 28/01/2014 20:21

I just used a drawstring bag with waterproof lining from Cath Kidston and shoved it into my normal bag. There's too much stuff/juggling involved with taking a little person out and about as it is, without having a huge changing bag plus your own handbag too IMO. I actually have one of those nifty roll-up change mats with pockets for wipes and nappies now and I wish I'd got it earlier (DS is now 2.5) - it's amazing the number of places that have high chairs etc for babies and yet don't have proper changing facilities... I've regularly had to change DS on the floor in various loos!

I started off with a cheap cross body bag from eBay which was absolutely fine - it had enough room for everything and I didn't care if it got a bit trashed. I cold also put it over the pram bars or wear it across me while dd was in the sling. I couldn't have had a shoulder bag.

I lusted after some of the more expensive ones but couldn't justify the spend at the time.

When dd was older and i didn't need to carry much stuff, I moved onto a pink lining 'mum on the run' type bag which I could put in my normal handbag/buggy etc and had a changing mat and enough room for a couple of nappies, wipes and a spare outfit.

This time (due in may) I have bought a lovely pink lining Bradley tote bag and it was half price in the sale!.

This is lovely ladies, thank you for all of the advice!

Are you planning on using re-usable nappies or disposables? Breast or bottle? Makes a massive difference to whether you'll need a huge wipe-clean change bag.

I didn't, and got away with just a spare sposie and small pack of wipes in my handbag most of the time.

commsgirl · 31/01/2014 12:44

I've bought a BabyBeau Ellie and plan to use as my handbag as well as a change bag. The leather is fantastic quality and it has a fully removable waterproof lining.

AJH2007 · 31/01/2014 16:35

I've got a pacapod from last time but didn't get on that well with the bag itself. This time I'm getting a normal backpack from north face or similar and will use the "pods" from the pacapod and a skiphop mat which has pockets for wipes etc. I'll need stuff for DC2 plus snacks/change of clothes for recently potty trained toddler. Plus I'll be using a sling which makes shoulder bags trickier.

NomDeClavier · 31/01/2014 16:44

I've actually been really impressed by the quality of my leather storksak. It's 3 years old now and in great condition. We also have a skip hop dash that's brilliant for chucking under the pram but you can't get a change of clothes in it.

ThereIsNoEleventeen · 31/01/2014 18:14

I got tired of either having to take a changing bag and a handbag out or trying to stuff my own stuff into a changing bag so I bought a nice leather one. It about 6 years old and still looks like new, when the DC's are bigger they pass you lolly sticks and tissues (...and then there is potty training paraphernalia to carry about) so the wipe cleaning and loads of pockets comes in useful. It will get used again when the next DC is born in the summer. Usually I just take out the nappies and wipes etc when I go out on my own as the bag looks like a normal handbag.

I bought it from here.
