No, not mad. DH and I have found out with both of our babies and it's been a lovely moment to discover we are having girls. I am a form believer that it also connects you to the baby more during the pregnancy although I'm sure lots more will dispute that theory! Remember it isn't 100% accurate so don't go crazy with nursery themes for specific sex etc.

Are you having private antenatal care or NHS? A lot of NHS hospitals offer yo tell you at the 20 week scan so if you wanted to save your money you might like to check if yours does first.

And congratulations Thanks

If you are concerned about a sex linked inherited condition, then I suggest you talk to your MW/doctor about the need to have an additional scan as early as possible. You shouldn't be having to fork out in those circumstances.

My SIL found out at 12 weeks, purely only because my nephew (god forgive me) has a massive willy.

The earliest i've heard otherwise is 16 weeks.
I'm finding out this thurs at 20. cannot wait. Do NOT know how people wait until they give birth! i'm too nosey!!!

Writerwannabe83 · 28/01/2014 10:29

Me and my husband paid to have a gender scan at 16 weeks - it was amazing!!!! I loved hearing what sex the baby was, it was a really special moment Smile

ThisIsYourSong · 28/01/2014 10:33

The Fetal Medicine Clinic in Harley Street are great and they will definitely be able to tell you. Although the NHS will tell at your 20 week scan so not that long to wait really Smile

summerdreams · 28/01/2014 10:35

i had a private scan at 11+4, in general the level of anatomical detail was fantastic compared to what we had seen and had explained on nhs 12 week scan. nonetheless i didnt think she would be able to tell gender. i commented that i had a strong hunch it was a girl, she looked at me and said "do you want to know?". she then said she has to warn me that accuracy is only 75% at this stage, but boy. i knew she knew though!!!

at every subsequent scan his enormous bits have been very obvious (iv had scans at 20, 24, 28, 32 & 36 wks).

i think most people are fairly confident from about 16 weeks but if its an obvious boy, much sooner.

ChicaMomma · 28/01/2014 10:45

Summer, please make sure you get it done somewhere that has a clause that if the baby is backwards on the day that they will scan you again for free. Not all of them do. Have heard of people getting caught out this way!

summerdreams · 28/01/2014 10:52

Ilovekittyelise where did you have it done please say near london
ChicaMomma thanks for that i defo will now!

Personally I'd wait for the 20 week NHS scan and save the money spent on a private scan for a nice present for baby or a pram etc!

SaucyJack · 28/01/2014 10:59

If you've got the money to spare, then it's not mad at all.

ChicaMomma · 28/01/2014 11:00

Cariad, i have to agree. We considering forking out for the 16 week gender scan too, but decided to wait, and lo and behold my 20 week appt is now Thursday- the time flies in. I just put it out of my head in the interim and started a de-clutter project in the house to focus on something else! I ended up forgetting about it completely and it's only since the weekend that i'm obsessing about it again, knowing it's a matter of days away... You could get a lot of goodies for 150 quid (or whatever it is)- for a start you could get 2 lovely massages!

CrispyFB · 28/01/2014 11:32

I found out at 12 weeks with more certainty than an ultrasound. However the main reason for the test was to find out if the baby had a chromosomal abnormality. I had the test at 10 weeks (Harmony - takes a sample of the mother's blood, so no risk to baby) and had the results two weeks later. It's not cheap however (at least £400 depending on where you go) but for me it was worth it given I had a past history of bad NT screening. The sex was just an added bonus and not the main reason for the test.

That's pretty much the earliest you can find out. You can also find out following a CVS or amnio but those are invasive tests only done following a bad NT screening.

woodhj · 28/01/2014 12:07

Anyone who has had an early sex scan did the sonographer explain how they know? is it the nub theory? I had my scan on Friday and if the nub theory is right. It was laying horizontal with the body and so a girl.
We are finding on in 6 weeks but so impatient.

Writerwannabe83 · 28/01/2014 12:12

My sonographer knew because there was a very obvious penis and scrotum, lol Smile

woodhj · 28/01/2014 12:16

Oh I see!! nothing was very obvious on ours, wriggled around continuously lol x

Writerwannabe83 · 28/01/2014 12:47

How many weeks were you??

BEEwitched · 28/01/2014 12:52

We paid for a scan, but that's because in my area the NHS won't tell you - the Fetal Medicine Clinic is great, but some places do a sex scan much cheaper, we only paid £39.

Showy · 28/01/2014 12:58

I had an NHS scan at 13+6 and the sonographer (a friend) was using a brand new and pretty snazzy ultrasound machine. She showed me how you check for sex that early, showed me on the baby what they look for and explained that you'd very reasonably expect the baby to be a boy (clearly developing that way, nub changing and various other things ). He is indeed a boy. I wouldn't pay to find out that early though. About 16 weeks onwards is pretty accurate.

Expectingtwins1975 · 28/01/2014 13:06

My nhs trust told me at my 12 week scan - (was at kings). They could tell by looking at some bone - was horizontal for the girl and vertical for the boy (I'm having one of each). Sorry I don't know any actual scientific details of what bone etc. the dr was pretty definite - although they did say that they couldn't give 100% guarantee etc. wasn't any medical reason for me to know they just offered and I was dying to find out

Mitchell2 · 28/01/2014 13:25

I knew early via a harmony type test - test was done at 9+6 and results back at 11+6. As said before it was a chromosomal test where they look at fetal DNA and they can tell the sex from that. Its a bit weird that I have known for so long but there was no point in waiting any longer as we wanted to know either way.
