Fainting in 2nd trimester

Don't know if anyone could offer some advice. I'm just over 19wks now so well into the 2nd trimester and so far all has gone relatively smoothly. However was v unsettled today as I fainted in the local shopping centre. Suddenly while walking in the mall my legs felt incredibly heavy, eyes went out of focus and I had to sit down. When I felt a bit better started walking again but soon started feeling off again and passed out coming while exiting a lift in one of the stores. Fortunately I was near the Bed Dept and able to lie down for a bit and recover! I also felt v faint yesterday morning after getting out from bed although was able to lie down quickly after and the symptoms soon passed. Have been eating ok and relatively regularly (although not sure about blood sugar levels) and when I took my blood pressure this evg it was completely normal. Will book at GP appt tomorrow but just wondered if anybody could offer any advice - it wasn't a nice experience and eager to get to the bottom of it. Many thanks.

I had dizzy spells throughout pregnancy - it's miserable. Maybe get your iron levels checked, as anaemia can cause bouts of low blood pressure and it's quite easy to become anaemic during the 2nd trimester...

I fainted when pregnant with my DTs while we were viewing a house!

Best speak to your MW, I needed an iron supplement and was fine.

hi there, poor you, not very nice. I had a faint out walking during second tri, maybe towards the end of it though. I saw the doc or midwife about it and they thought it was because I was exerting physical effort very soon after eating and that my blood was doing the job of digestion and there wasn't enough for my head (in simple terms I think that's about it). It only happened the once with me. I took it as a sign to slow down a little. Hope you get to rest up and that this was a one off for you too.

I've had this since the very beginning of pregnancy, I'm 22 weeks now - I've had a few near misses with fainting and I've had a fall when I lost my balance, it is rotten.

Get your iron levels and your blood pressure checked - both mine are ok so sometimes it's just something that happens.

Writerwannabe83 · 27/01/2014 20:35

I'm definitely guessing it's your iron levels. I hope you are ok now Thanks

I am 16+4 and my BP is low and as are my iron levels and am a definite fainter! Have started spatone now

JassyRadlett · 27/01/2014 20:45

I had this throughout pregnancy, iron levels fine but blood pressure through the floor.

Everybody thank you so much for your fast and informative replies. It certainly seems as though this isn't an uncommon phenomenon and hope it is something straightforward like my iron levels. Sorry some of you also have had similar incidences - it really takes you aback and horrible to feel so out of control of your body not to mention slightly embarrassing when it happens in a v public place. I take Pregnacare which contains Iron 17mg daily but perhaps this isn't enough, will def check with the GP tomorrow.

Hi, I also have periods of dizziness, my iron levels were fine. I do know that your bp is always low in the morning as is your blood sugar so that could explain dizzy feeling in morning! Always have a good brekki and drink. I also got told dehydration can lead to dizziness so make sure you drinking lots! Finally you say you're in second trimester, I know that this is when your blood pressure is at it's lowest, it should start to rise from about 24-26 weeks! Hope this has helped x

Check your drinking enough water I've nearly fainted 3 times and after drinking a bottle of water felt much better. I now carry water everywhere and drink it constantly...go to the toilet a lot but better than fainting

Many thanks for all your further advice, much of which very much echoed what my GP said this morning. She felt the fainting could have been caused by my blood sugars dropping due to perhaps not snacking enough between meals. Am also going to get a blood test for iron levels next week and will def. remember to drink more, something so easy to overlook.

I got the heavy dizziness, which caused my sudden lighted head and fainty feeling, twice this week and three times in the past three weeks. Though i gathered my strength after laying down for a while (on the ground first before managing to crawl to bed/somewhere warm), the tiredness is prolonged... i also vomit a couple of times a day in some days, or once every few days some other days - even 23 weeks now. When experiencing all the sickness during my pregnancy I really feel for all other moms and moms to be out there. Amazing us and bless our little ones!
