Did you still pack everything including the kitchen sink in your hosp. bag anyway?

Thinking of things like pyjamas, wash bags, multiple changes of baby clothes yadda yadda yadda.

I'm not sure how you can plan how long you're going to stay...

Shellywelly1973 · 25/01/2014 23:09

No. I just packed 2 pj's. 4 baby gros & 4; vests. Wash bag. Nappies. milk. Not loads.

pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 25/01/2014 23:10

You can't plan, so yes. As shellywelly says, you don't need loads, just enough to get you through to whenever DP can get back with replacements if you need.

SaucyJack · 25/01/2014 23:11

Of course you can plan not to stay in overnight if there are no medical complications cute Hmm

Weird answer.

you cant plan not to stay in as circumstances can get in the way e.g. dd was jaundiced and had to have phototherapy - was in 5 days with her. DS had a heart murmur and had to have extra tests so was in 3 days with him

EthelredOnAGoodDay · 25/01/2014 23:12

Depends how far you live from the hospital I guess and how easy it would be to pick up more if you ended up staying.

ilovepowerhoop · 25/01/2014 23:12

you can plan it but things dont always go to plan

notso · 25/01/2014 23:13

I always just packed a small labour bag and a bigger post natal bag which was left in the boot. It's no great shakes to unpack it if you go home but it's there if you need it.

AnythingNotEverything · 25/01/2014 23:13

Surely when you set off to hospital you have no idea how long labour will take.

If a child is born in the evening you'd expect to stay until the morning of have thought?

EthelredOnAGoodDay · 25/01/2014 23:14

I spose that's the point though isn't it-you don't know if there will be complications til you get into active labour and delivery and by then the last thing you're thinking about is your bag.

CuteLittleToes · 25/01/2014 23:20

I don't think they would keep you overnight if there were no complications... Anyway, it's a big IF, so you can't really plan.

Sorry, I'm not trying to be horrible, just the question sounded a bit weird.

If you don't want to take much, you could pack a second bag with extra stuff and leave it in the cat or at home for OH to get later if needed.

Even if you end up not staying, pack a few babygros/vest - you'd be amazed how easily they can soil them!

SaucyJack · 25/01/2014 23:34

I wouldn't, seeing as I've already had two of the little beggars..........

There's really no need to be so patronizing seeing as I'm eight months into my third healthy, uncomplicated head-down pregnancy.

Sorry for wasting your time with what seemed like a sensible question to me.

It's a bit like saying you're 'planning' a sneeze-birth. We'd all like that, but it's not really something you can plan....

ButICantaloupe · 25/01/2014 23:46

Will it e easy for your DH to get back to the hospital? If so, I would pack what I needed for the night and then send DH back if I was staying in longer than I had anticipated

MerylStrop · 25/01/2014 23:47

I did last time (3rd baby). Though admittedly not until I was in labour, so perhaps somewhat randomly. Because you never know.

It was a veritable sneeze birth to my huge surprise and delight. BUT we nearly had to stay in overnight because they didn't organise their arse to get the paed check done. (I couldn't have minded staying in tbh)

Shellywelly1973 · 25/01/2014 23:55

I suppose you would go by previous births. I am. Unless the baby is ill I won't stay any longer then I have to.

So with last 3 i was only 2 hours away from giving birth when I arrived at hospital/birth centre. All born at night so discharged the next morning. Never moved to a ward or anything like that.

Good point about another bag but I don't have anyone that could get an extra bag to me whilst I am at the hospital so I might pop some extra bits in my bag.

Ilovekittyelise · 26/01/2014 00:27

if only i hadnt planned to have a long and difficult labour and forceps delivery!

it sounds likely that you will be out fairly quickly but then you never know what time of day it wil be so id stilltake pjs, mini shower gel etc and couple of babygros, you could have extra bag at home ready in case you need to stay in longer.

also perhaps some bribe money to hurry up the ludicrously slow discharge process!

RubyGoat · 26/01/2014 00:31

I'd planned a water birth with possibly 1 night in hospital. The reality was somewhat different, DH had to bring changes of clothes for myself & DD, & extra supplies of everything, DD & I were in for 5 days.

MummyPig24 · 26/01/2014 05:54

I've packed 3 vests and sleepsuits, some nappies, pjs for me and some joggers and a top, a few pairs of pants. Enough for a stay of a day or two basically. I may stay one night, I may come straight home depending on how I feel and how it all goes.

NandH · 26/01/2014 06:02

2nd baby I planned to go home same day aslong as all went well, had him at 3pm with no complications so I left at 8.30pm, he was 3 weeks early, I don't think they really had space on the ward for us anyway!

But yes, I did still pack everything, just Incase!

OrangeMochaFrappucino · 26/01/2014 06:11

Well, I'm planning a home birth so don't intend to stay anywhere but will still pack a hospital bag in case. I had a healthy uncomplicated head down pregnancy last time followed by a sneeze birth but was still in for five days due to problems with ds feeding. I think it's best to be prepared either way

CuteLittleToes · 26/01/2014 08:56

I hope you have a straightforward delivery and a healthy baby then. Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy.

LydiaLunches · 26/01/2014 09:01

For early discharge in this weather I would pack something a bit tracksuity or cosy yoga wear style outfit as I wouldn't feel up to proper clothes Togo home in like I would the day after. Tbh I have done domino or hb every time and still pack a big bag, then live out of it for convenience for a few days, easier for dh too.

thecakeisalie · 26/01/2014 09:14

I totally get what your saying SaucyJack. I'm on dc3 and planning a home birth this time but if I was going to hospital I would have every hope of being discharged within 6hrs of the birth as I have with ds1 & 2. I don't see whats wrong with having an idea how you want things to go especially based on previous experience I mean there's being open minded about the possibility of complications then there's being down right pessimistic.

I think the idea of packing a labour bag and then a postnatal bag to be left in the car/at home if you have to stay in for some unexpected reason sounds sensible. I would probably take nightwear but mainly because I'd want to be comfortable during and after delivery. I would defiantly recommend taking toiletries as I personally was desperate to be clean after each birth and had a shower within the first 1-2hrs.
