If you eat a balanced diet then supplements are probably not that high of a priority. However if you want then a good all round multivitamin like Pregnacare and your MW will probably red contend you take folic acid.
Congrats on your pregnancy Smile

I took pregnacare, and made sure I ate a reasonable amount of dairy to get enough calcium. Iirc your body can't absorb calcium at the same time as iron so if you just take one vitamin pill then you will probably need to do something extra to get calcium.

PossumBottom · 26/01/2014 06:52

You need folic acid and vitamin D.

I take pregnacare + as it has everything and an omega 3 capsule as well- I don't eat much fish.

You just need to make sure it's a special pregnancy supplement with no vit A, or take folios acid and vit D separately.

I'm a vegetarian so not sure how that impacts it

I've bought the seven seas pregnant vit which also has fish oils in the box as a seperate pill

I bought calcuim and magnes combined vitamin but unsure if I need to take them or not.

I eat no meat and very little fish (odd tuna sandwich or fish supper from chipper - that's it)

If the seven seas vit contains calcium and magnesium then you won't need to take the extra tablet. When I went to the midwife they advised folic acid and calcium as I can't take the pregnancy all in one vits.

I take 5mg of Folic Acid and two Iron Supplements a day. Both of these have been prescribed by my GP.

I also take Sanatogen Mum-To-Be vitamins and have a Spatone drink each day (another iron supplement).

I only take so much iron though because my levels are so low, it isn't a necessity in normal cases. As has been said, a healthy varied diet is probably the most important.

PossumBottom · 26/01/2014 09:35

You should be ok with just the seven seas and fish oil capsule. It's nice to be able to 'do' something during pregnancy isn't it?

This is a really good book which gives great advice on eating well and supps to take during pregnancy:

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B008YOAHN4/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1390735014&sr=8-1&pi=AC_SX110_SY165

After reading it and doing a bit more research I take the following 3 tablets twice a day (with breakfast and lunch):

  • BioCare Pregnancy & Lactation Formula
  • Patrick Holford Vitamin C
  • Blue Ice Royal fermented cod liver oil (I'm veggie as well, couldn't bear to eat meat / fish but they're essential fatty acids with omegas 3, 6 & 9 which are very important for baby brain development. So I'm ignoring my morals and sucking it up for now!)

I found it so overwhelming when I first looked into what to take as there's a lot of different information out there. Hope the above helps!

Just wanted to throw in (as a vegan) that there are some good plant based sources of omega 3, including chia seed (my fave); flax seed and oil; and algae. I throw some chia in my smoothies or porridge, bob's yr uncle.

I also take a multi-vit with D, B-12, folic acid and a few others. It's not pre-natal, just normal. And every other day I have some liquid iron (Floradix). I feel great and my bloodwork has been perfect.

Congratulations on your pregnancy. :)

Snowlet · 26/01/2014 12:00

Ah sorry, forgot to say, my multi-vit is chewable (supposed to be better for absorption, apparently) and I also take a chewable calcium.

SarahSPT · 26/01/2014 12:21

Seeds & nuts are brilliant - I put some in natural yoghurt. Great for protein and good fats as well. Haven't tried flax in smoothies yet, mine broke and the don't work very well in my juicer!

SarahSPT · 26/01/2014 12:23

My blender broke which would make that previous post make sense!

Daytona79 · 26/01/2014 22:37

I read you were not allowed to take cod liver oil when pregnant..??

I'm just taking folic acid and vit D, but have read somewhere that zinc is a good idea too. I need to ask when I get my first midwife appointment next week.

SarahSPT · 27/01/2014 02:40

Daytona, have a read of this link (apologies for lack of hyperlink, doing this on my phone):

www.marysgarden.com/colostrum/blue_ice_royal.htm

There is a lot of info out there on fermented organic CLO and it's worth looking into a few articles. Each to their own though - so much conflicting reading is confusing. I read all the NHS has to offer but there's a lot of interesting further research out there as well.

Zinc is very good for the baby and you should get the right amount from a multivitamin and eating lots of fruit and veg (the more raw the better).
