I have had a boring day at work today and have spent most of the time googling mum related stuff such as breast feeding etc and i have officially freaked my self out. Breast feeding is positively the scariest thing ever.. apart from labor that is... there are actual BOOKs on how to do it. There are so many books on being a parent that i have no idea where to start... and if i cant choose a book how the hell am i supposed to choose a pram / monitor or even F*kin nappy for crying out loud....i dont know where to start with this having a baby business! COMPLETE FREAK OUT OCCURRING!!!

How many weeks are you? I had a big wobble at about 8 weeks - I've never changed a nappy. I'm messy and unorganised. What do babies DO anyway?!

But it's happening, so I need to get a grip. Cavewomen didn't have books and forums, yet the human race survived. We are SO able to do this!

As far as BF is concerned, I'm going to drop into the support group at my library when I start maternity to openly stare at people & see how it's done. Well... maybe just get some RL tips and advice.
Nappies, I've bought some first size ones. If I'm wrong DH can go to the 24h Tesco.
Monitor I'm leaving until the baby's in his/her own room & I'll know more by then.
Pram, I loved pram shopping. Go to kiddicare or similar and try loads.

In short, I'm winging it. I think most new mums do Grin lots of luck for a happy, healthy pregnancy!

If it makes you feel any better I didn't go to any breastfeeding classes or read any breastfeeding books and DS (4 months) has been exclusively breast fed since day 1 with no problems at all.
Pregnancy books freaked me out as there's too much conflicting information, so I stepped away and felt much better.
Good luck! Trust yourself!!! You'll do great Smile

Firstly don't panic!! (easier said than done I know, we are on DC2 and still have panics!)
Speak to your midwife to find out about breastfeeding support groups then go along before you have your baby. I found that Many of the more experienced mums don't even mind you staring closely whilst they demonstrate how to latch the baby on etc., it's a million times better than a drawing in a book.
As far as 'baby books' go there can be so much conflicting advice. Maybe go to your local library/Waterstones and have a browse through some to see if any suit your basic way of thinking before you buy. And don't be afraid to ask questions on Mumsnet!

I'm pregnant with my second and still have freak out moments - totally normal!

YY to breastfeeding support groups, also find numbers for the local support helplines, I had a wonderful lady from Little Angels come out to me to watch a feed and help with our latch and tell us what was normal for growth spurts.

You'll figure it all out, nobody is perfect :)

First of all.... You should do a google/website ban for a short time. Ive just done that after reading something that frightened me and told myself to look at nothing massively pregnancy related for 2 days. I'm now looking and feel a lot better, more relaxed and in control. I think the internet can be good at times, but I have found I will look at stuff just for the hell of it, for too long, and it sends me into overdrive!just realised I don't have a second point.... Never mind!

Oh yes, been there and freaked out many many times during pregnancy. I would wake up having palpitations about getting a top and tail bowl and flannels!!! I never used the bloody flannels, I have no idea why my book made such a song and dance about them.

Breast feeding is a totally organic thing. If it's something you feel passionately about doing then I would suggest you find out where your breast feeding support network meet ups are local to you and you go to them with your baby. They were a total lifeline for me.

If you are lucky and your baby latches and feeds fine then in the first few days it's about managing the engorgement and finding decent feed positions. Your HV will definitely help with the latter, the engorgement can be painful but it passes.

Step away from google. Ask away on Mumsnet.

The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding is a highly recommended breastfeeding book. The KellyMom website is also great.

I'm ebf my 13 week old DD and learnt so much from the feeding boards here.

Congratulations on your pregnancy. We're all winging it really!
