Big knickers

I'm trying to sort my hospital bag, and have read big knickers are a must. When they say big, how big...?

My size 8/10 SIL said she went for the regular M&S cotton brief in size 16, bought 4 pairs for a tenner or something. She said she wondered would they be massive on her but they werent at all, probably would have fitted someone bigger than her too but felt fine, and she didnt put on that much weight, 2 stone i think.

I'm a size 10 myself and already wearing size 14 knickers at the half way mark, just for comfort!

Just go for comfort, forget about how 'big' they are.. Someone said to me that they got 10 pairs in Primark for like a fiver or something! Quantity not quality and dispose of them all!!

MrsArthurWellesley · 23/01/2014 16:01

Yep, full briefs from Primark. Black ones. Tbh I started with some of my grotty pairs of high legs (you know, the ones that only come out at that time of the month) and they were fine but I didn't have a cs, so I'm not sure whether they'd have been ok in those circumstances.

A size up is fine, the Primark ones seem to be generously sized.

LavenderFox · 23/01/2014 16:01

Granny panties. Need to reach over your bump which won't disappear instantly, and have full crotch which keeps your big, thick maternity sanitary pads in place nicely. Thongs really won't work and low-cut pants may cut into the abdomen where a potential c/s scar would be.

FoxMulder · 23/01/2014 16:05

I don't really get this either. I mean, how is having knickers up to your armpits going to help contain a maternity pad (I assume that's what they're thinking of?) Confused

As for during pregnancy (rather than post-labour) I'm 32 weeks and still wearing my pre-preg knickers. I could probably do with going up a size though, my arse is getting a bit fat Smile

FoxMulder · 23/01/2014 16:08

Hmm, I understand the C-section scar thing though.

ChicaMomma · 23/01/2014 16:11

Reach over the bump???!!! yikes- surely you'd need speciality ones that would cost a goddamn fortune??
I'm planning on going 'under bump' to be honest- primark briefs a few sizes up- whatever feels comfortable during the weeks before i'd assume?

Charingcrossbun · 23/01/2014 17:40

I may be weird but I don't have an "under bump". Maybe it's a short arse thing but I come straight out from my pubic bone iuswim! I tend to go commando at the mo to stop pants
cutting in/rolling down... Will see if primark do ones huge enough to do over bump. If not pant braces?

Full briefs (according to the packet, granny knickers as I'd normally call them!) are perfect - I didn't have a c section but they were soooo comfortable after I'd had DS - my previously high, filled with baby bump became saggy and horrible so was much more comfortable to have something that came slightly over that!! I'm size 12 usually, got them in a 16 and they were fine (no 14's in stock when I bought them) so have gone for the same again this time.

ChicaMomma · 23/01/2014 17:48

Charingcross, i've a feeling i will be like you- bump starting in pubic bone!! i'm only 19 weeks so it's too early to tell, but by god the start of the bump is looking VERY LOW!!!! it literally starts to come out from the top of my knicker line.. weird.

cathpip · 23/01/2014 18:16

I got bog standard knickers in a couple of larger sizes and then after ds was delivered by emcs my husband was dispatched for correct knickers, the midwife told him " knickers that come over the bump" (matalan/primary/MandS). I know they are deeply unflattering but they are a must after a section and they also do help keep the belly still, after all it is like a deflated balloon with a mind of its own after baby has come out :)

Charingcrossbun · 23/01/2014 18:18

Blimey cathpip "it's like a deflated balloon with a mind of it's own" good job we'll have a baby to distract us...Wink

IShallCallYouSquishy · 23/01/2014 18:22

With DD I went for several packs of the 5 for £2.50 black full pants from Primark. Will be getting the same again. I size up in them so will be getting the 14-16 as I'm a 12

K8eee · 23/01/2014 19:53

Well I've opted for high leg briefs Blush I did see the apple catchers (as my mum would call them) but if I need those sorts, I'll get dh to pop into our local town whilst I'm in hospital.

They're more expensive than the Primark ones but I really rated the microfibre ones from m&s. Sooooooo soft and comfy, I still wear them now. And as an added bonus they don't give you VPL.

Mim78 · 23/01/2014 21:13

Granny knickers from m and s are what I went for.

QueenThora · 23/01/2014 21:17

I had a CS and I was given special hospital knickers which were like a tube of stretchy, very light bandage material with a crotch, which stretched right up over the bump. They were great! I remember washing them at home over and over so I could wear them as much as possible. If you have a CS ask for a few of these.

DontmindifIdo · 23/01/2014 21:18

I'd go for big apple catchers, "full pants" - full tummy covering pants, I'm a size 6-8 normally, bought size 12.

Get them in the supermarket for a couple of quid and then discover how comfy they are and end up wearing them forever

GreatJoanUmber · 23/01/2014 22:02

Grin @ Dontmind

Sitting here in my granny pants full briefs as we speak. Had an ELCS so knew I'd need the 'over bump' variety. Pre-pregnancy a size 8/10, I got them in 14 and they fit great! And always go for the black ones!
And as others have said its nice to feel like something is holding the saggy, deflated stomach in a bit.

Spaghettinetti · 24/01/2014 12:07

If you're like me and can't cope with the idea of going into an overly crowded Primani on a Saturday, try Asda in the middle of the night... They do a five pack of full briefs for £2.75, they're really comfy and 100 % cotton and come right above the bump...
