Belly belts - any good?

OK - so I'm 10 weeks now and my trousers are getting a little tight but I definitely don't need maternity ones yet.
Has anyone tried one of these? belly belt ? And are they any good or just another pregnancy gimmick?
TIA

Never used one, but i always buy the next size up in trousers or whatever will fit me. Primark is good for that sort of thing!

Tommy · 30/07/2006 19:24

thanks sophie but I can't really afford any new clothes (have just managed to get back into my size 12s but most of my 14s are worn out!)

anyone else?!

I used one in my last pregnancy and they were quite good. You do have to wear loose, quite long tops though to cover it up as it can look a bit crinkled under a closer fitting top. This time round I didnt use it (mainly because my sister borrowed it and half the pieces were missing!!) I improvised for a while and used one of dd's hair bobbles looped around the button and through the button hole. I then used maternity jeans but with a long woven belt to keep them up until I grew into them properly.

I bought both versions off ebay (2nd hand), slide & button. They're ok, wouldn't pay new prices for them though. Do make some trousers seem very bulky (or crinkled as with seona), but tops don't have to be that long in the beginning as you don't use the fabric bit for a while (I'm 20 weeks & just using the 'belt', not the fabric you loop through). Some trousers just don't sit right with them (I think better for heavier ones like jeans maybe?), but I think I got both 'sets' for under £20 on ebay, so cheaper than a pair of dottyp trews! Alternative to buy mat trousers off ebay?!

thanks - I have maternity trousers left over from last time but thought maybe I could eke out my regular ones for a bit longer!
Thanks - will ask around to see if someone has one I could borrow and try out.

I LOVE mine- bought in the US at a maternity store and allows me to still wear a lot of my clothes, especially those where the buckle area isn't too bulky. Still wearing my normal business suits with this and other clothing so highly recommend. It's the simple all elastic type.

shazronnie · 02/08/2006 13:20

I used mine for the first few months, but then only maternity trousers really do the job imo.

shazronnie · 02/08/2006 13:23

it's cheaper here and free postage

Tommy · 02/08/2006 13:38

thanks - any idea what a "slide" fastener is?!

I find it works better with below the waist trousers, as long as I can find a long top. My walking trousers are to the waist and I found it too tight between the legs at around five months. I used it mostly before this weather - ie. cold enough for a fleece or coat over the top.

I've got the button one, but I think the slide one is for the other type of jeans fastening, so it depends which type of fastening most of your trousers have.

I'd say they're fine for walking the dog/slobbing about (and save you buying stuff for this), but you'll probably want some stuff to feel good in as well.

shazronnie · 02/08/2006 16:43

slide fastener is like a big hook and eye; like you get instead of buttons on some trousers.

Tommy · 02/08/2006 19:04

thankyou shazronnie - I now what you mean now
I try not to do "below the waist trousers" as my waist is a bit indefinable.... so I may give these things a miss and just move onto the maternity ones a bit quicker!
Thanks all

Do you mean support belts? I have been using a support belt for a week now and I wouldn't be without it. As far as I know it also helps prevent as many stretch marks as it supports your bump, therefor not allowing your skin to carry all the weight and be stretches so far. I will wear one daily throughout my pregnancy; I don't care that much that it's noticalbe. After all; I'm pregnant and proud to be.

carrotcake · 04/09/2006 21:28

No, don't do that, try the belly belts, they're fab! Only just seen this thread, I'm 21 weeks now and have only spent 15 pounds so far on bump belts from topshop, in white, grey and black. They didn't have these in my last two pregnancies and they're brilliant. I'm still wearing my jeans undone with a hairband and a belt over the top, also lots of tops in the shops are really long at the moment so you don't have to buy expensive maternity ones. Also noticed in wh smiths yesterday that you get a free pink one with Pregnancy and Birth magazine!! I think the ones with a special slider for buttons are a bit more, 15 each pounds or something from Jojo Maman? but I'm not bothered about the button...

carrotcake · 04/09/2006 21:38

but depends if you're happy in jeans and tops with a layered effect like I am. If you want a smarter look, however, you probably need to go for the maternity stuff...

hettie · 05/09/2006 09:07

hello,
I am 12 weeks and my bump just pushed out over the last few days. I am quite tiny (size eight) and had a flat tum- so all my trousers were flat fronted. Like you I looked at the belly band but have now found a cheaper solution! I bought an elasticised belt from Primark for a quid and because most of my trousers have belt loops have found that this works well. I already had a big elasticised red belt that I can wear over tops to hold up trousers that don?t have belt loops. I also spent 10 quid on three long tops from Primark (as someone pointed out they are very ?in? at the moment) and bought two bump bands (cottony/lycra mix tubes) from topshop- sorted! As I don?t think extending my current trousers will last for long (I reckon I?m going to get huge ) I didn?t want the expense of the belly belt and think the bump bands will be good investment for all of pregnancy.

carrotcake · 05/09/2006 10:36

Ah, just looked at the original belly belt link, the ones with the button hole. I mean bump bands like Hettie, much cheaper, five pounds from topshop...

These are a fab otpion while you are pregnant, it really sorts out the bottom half! Button version is for all clothes with buttons, the slide otpion is for all clothes with hook and eye fastenings or zips! They are £13 each but will save you a fortune! I have both. Purchase from www.mamatoto.co.uk and if you quote NB2AH680 there is free postage and packaging at the moment!
