Will we ever make good parents?

In second trimester of first pregnancy. DP and mine's lifestyle can at best be termed chaotic.
Three years ago we moved into a new house that needed an extension....we are still building it !The house/garden are a permanent building site, and desperately need decorating. At the moment we have no heating, and no cooker. (we decided at the beginning to do a lot of the work ourselves)
This is added to by our assortent of much loved pets, including an elderly rescue cat who occasionally throws up, or decides her litter tray is not the place to go (has been checked out by the vets-not medically caused!!)
Housework has never been my favourite way to spend my time... so although the house is cleaned once a week, it is never tidy...
We both work full time, and have other commitments as well...
The pregnancy was planned, but now I'm seriously doubting whether we can be the parents this baby deserves....or does the magic homemaker fairy wave her magic wand during labour and you are instantly transformed in to Nigella?
Is there anyone else out their like us? If so how do you cope and do you feel as guilty as I do about not having the perfect house, and cooking perfect meals every night....

P.S. any life changing tips welcome....

actually I think you will adjust to parenthood no problem, life with a newborn is all about chaos!!!! Someone who was very nigella-like would probably find it harder !

You'll be fine.

Housework isn't my favourite way of passing the time and usually my house is a tip. It desperately needs decorating, and the handles need putting back on several of the doors from when they were stripped 8 years ago. We have a cat who also upchucks fairly frequently, and who regularly misses the litter tray (despite it being the biggest litter tray in the world).

It doesn't stop dd being happy, healthy, and loved to pieces. Parenting isn't about having perfectly papered walls and hoovering the lounge three times a day, it's about loving and respecting your child, and bringing them up in a happy environment.

You'll be fine ... and so will the baby.

Yeah, if you're used to a pristine life with no disorder, kids are a real shock.

I've never been a good homemaker, although I have got into cooking more, since I had my DSes. I still don't really clean, and my house is never ever tidy.

I don't think parenting is the same thing as keeping a tidy house at all.

you don't need a life changing tip .. babies bring their own tips with them

you'll be fine

you're having the first time mum willies, that's all .. we all have them ... and it just ends up working

luckily they come as newborns who are very portable and then the difficult bits sneak up on you

also remember babies don't care if your home is a mess or the bin needs emptying. All they want is your love and affection and time. That costs nothing and doesn;t take time to gather together itkiwm..!!

I think mess only becomes a problem when they start crawling then you have to watch for what they could stuff into their mouths, which for a baby is anything that happens to be within reach!!

Thanks Ladies for the reassurance. Sorry for the whinge!
