Im in two minds about the flu jab the midwife advises you have. Im fit healthy and as we all think made of strong stuff.
Anybody had the jab and any side effects? general thoughts on it?

Of course. Flu can damage the embryo and put the pregnancy at risk. So I had the shot at 6 weeks.

I had the jab at work in november (im a nurse). However in january i caught influenza A which became pneumonia and i spent 5 days in hospital. They thought i had a pulmonary embolism and i had loads of x rays and a radioactive scan. Im still not quite right now three weeks on. I would still have the jab though, ive just had bad luck and the hospital im at have only had 5 confirmed cases this year.

I had flu and whooping cough jab (at the same time) last year when 28 weeks pregnant with DC2. The same night I ended up in hospital with threatened preterm labour.

I was assured it was coincidental and the jabs are safe.

So, had flu jab again this pregnancy at 25 weeks and suffered the worst cold/cough I've ever had - only just over it now.

My MW has asked a few times if I'm going to have the whooping cough jab. I think I'll skip it.

I work in close proximity with patients and every year I get some bug or other. So I decided to get the jab. Had absolutely no side effects whatsoever. And even though all my workmates have all been off ill with something, I haven't had a thing.
In addition I've also had the whooping cough vaccine after reading the statistics on the increase of whooping cough cases and wanted my child to have the best chance of not getting this in the 2 months before it gets its own vaccines.

I remember crispy it was so terribly sad and if I recall it was luck rather than judgment that she didn't die too. She was extremely ill. Poor woman.

I really do think we over use the word 'flu' in this country so we have an impression of a 'bad cold' rather than life threatening illness which makes it seem less risky.

It's a personal choice but I've had it in both pregnancies.

Thisisfreakingmeout · 22/01/2014 07:46

I had both flu jab and WC and only had slightly sore arm for two days each time. I wouldn't risk having flu while pregnant and I wouldn't risk my newborn getting WC.

I had WC at age 7 and the inability to catch your breath is terrifying at times. I cannot imagine seeing that happen to a baby and as they would be unable to consciously c

Sorry posted too soon:

Consciously control their breathing I can see it would be horribly serious for a little one.

I disagree about going with your gut. I think I'll go with science on this one.

Snowlet · 22/01/2014 08:27

I turned it down, I would never have the flu jab normally, have never had it. It mutates many times every year and I don't feel like it gives me much protection anyway. My midwife didn't even blink when I said I wasn't keen.

However, though I have reservations about the fact that it's actually a booster full of antibodies I don't actually need, I do plan on having the whooping cough jab.

FredFlintstonesSister · 22/01/2014 10:07

Had it before Christmas. I get it every year anyway as I'm a teacher and the council is keen to reduce absence among staff! It's not a live vaccine so you can't get the flu from it. I had a sore arm for a couple of days but anticipated this so asked for jag on right side so I could keep sleeping on left.

FredFlintstonesSister · 22/01/2014 10:12

Also, my sister had whooping cough as a toddler. She was extremely ill and her growth was affected as a result. Whooping cough can be fatal to babies, like all the childhood diseases we vaccinate against, and I don't think it's ever worth aking the risk of leaving your baby unprotected. I don't think it's fair to rely on herd immunity and if everyone did, there would be no herd immunity at all! Sermon over, sorry!

chicamomma i agree with you on the eating right front. I have been eating well since we decided to TTC, maybe that is why the colds have been scaredSmile

SicknSpan · 22/01/2014 17:57

I've had it, was 17 was at the time I think. My Dr told me that a significant number of flu hospitalisations each winter are pregnant women. I rolled up my sleeve there and then!

IShallCallYouSquishy · 22/01/2014 18:12

I chose not to have the flu vaccine. I did have the whooping cough one though.

I had flu about a year ago (yes actually flu!) so thought I'd be very unlucky to get it again.

Mim78 · 22/01/2014 22:30

Have had it and the whooping cough. No problems except sore arm with w/c.

thebestnameshavegone · 23/01/2014 12:11

i had the flu jab but as i am allergic to eggs, i have to have a special type of jab that hasn't been grown in egg white protein. the nurse at my gp spent most of Christmas tracking down what was pretty much the last jab left in the local area! i had to drive to the big hospital 30 miles away, collect one of those big cool boxes that they transport organs in (which had the jab in it) bring it back to the gp's and they gave it to me there.
because i can't always have the "normal" jab for a lot of vaccinations, i tend to get them as soon as i can as i don't know if they will always be available.
i'll have to check about the WC jab nearer the time.
