Uppababy Vista Vs. Bugaboo Cameleon?

Julietee · 21/01/2014 10:21

I've narrowed it down to these choices (very happily grandparents and parents are clubbing together to get it for us).

I'm looking for something that can handle offroad field/ towpath walks.

We both found the handling on the Cameleon brilliant, but I'm slightly worried the bassinet is rather low down (I'm 5"8) ?

Any input would be gratefully received!

We have an uppababy vista and love it. Have used it nearly every day for last 2 years. We have 2 dogs & walk them a lot and have found the vista great on all terrain and lightweight. Advantage of the vista is the tyres dont need pumping up & wont ever go flat, specially handy for off road walks.

ChicaMomma · 21/01/2014 10:32

As a 5'8 (and a half!) girl i ruled out the Chameleon when my 5'8 friend said she felt stooped over it. that's no good.

I prefer the look of the ones that are higher up in general so am considering the Stokke, if i can find one at a decent price that is. I do like the idea of the Uppa too, might take another look at it based on Craving's review!

TinyTear · 21/01/2014 10:34

Vista, Vista, Vista!

I have one and it's great. the handle is also adjustable so handy for me (short arse) and DH (tall)

For offroad definitely get the Vista - have you seen the Cameleon's front wheels? still teeny.
I have taken my Vista on Hampstead Health muddy walks with no issue whatsoever...

TinyTear · 21/01/2014 10:35

chica the stokke looks great but wouldn't want to use it off road personally...

I think the Vista was the best thing I bought for my DD 2 years ago... we still use it and she sleeps sooo comfortably there when out and about...

Emilycee · 21/01/2014 10:39

I've ordered the Bugaboo Chameleon and I seem to remember that you can extend the handle to suit your height... but havent had a working practise of it - just saw the person in the shop demo it... could you go to Mothercare/John Lewis to have a go on both?

Julietee · 21/01/2014 10:42

Chica same height, actually. Good to know, thank you! I'm short sighted enough as it is without having to bend and squint to see future LO!

Emily Yes, you can absolutely adjust the handle height but I don't think you can raise the bassinet? My DH pointed out that it being low is part of what makes the Cameleon so easy to handle (low centre of gravity).

This is so helpful, thanks for posting people.

We recently took our 3 month old round a local forestry park in our uppababy vista on "buggy friendly" paths that were not buggy friendly at all IMHO! Since we wanted him to be able to see the trees etc we used the seat for the first time with the snug seat insert. The paths were cindery and gravelly and I was really worried about him getting excessively jiggled, but he fell asleep almost immediately and stayed asleep the whole way round.

I think any buggy is more difficult to push over rougher ground than smooth Tarmac, but I was really pleased with how well the vista coped.

30SecondsToVenus · 21/01/2014 10:45

I'm 5'8 and I found the bassinet really low on the cameleon. I had to bend down to pick up baby. The seat unit is much higher and it's very light and easy to push.

I really wish I had got a vista but I just couldn't afford it even second hand. I bought my Bugaboo second hand and got a fantastic price so I can't complain but I'd definitely recommend you to get the vista for height, shopping basket etc.

SquealyB · 21/01/2014 10:49

We had the same issue, I am 5ft 8, DH 6ft 2 and we went for the Stokke Xplory in the end and I love it. Friends who went for the Vista also rave about it too. We ruled out the Chamelon as it was just too low for us.

Dontletthemgetyoudown · 21/01/2014 10:50

the vista. I was once a pramaholic (rather embarrassed by that now) and had virtually every pram out there.

I shipped the first uppababy vista over from the USA on the day of release, or my daughter who is now 7. I have also had all the versions of the cameleon and I would 100% go for the Vista every time, no hesitation.

The cameleon is lovely and light to carry and for putting in the back of the car etc but The Vista is better for day o day use, its more practical. Things like the shopping basket is easier to get to, the carrycot is much nicer quality, very well padded. The seat unit is a better size for older toddlers. The frame is sturdier. It fares much better on rougher paths, its not an all terrain buggy, but ill cope with parks, woodland walks etc. If you want a proper off roading buggy you can't go wrong with the mountain buggy urban.

Dontletthemgetyoudown · 21/01/2014 10:51

I'm 5'9 and yes I found the cameleon really low, especially the carrycot. ANother one you might want to look at is the icandy, the 3 wheel version that has good reviews too.

EeyoreIsh · 21/01/2014 10:51

As a real person I've gone for the uppababy vista, as it's one of the few that's genuinely tall enough, and I also loved the fact that the seat is high. Not tried it out though as baby yet to arrive Grin

ChoccyPud · 21/01/2014 10:55

Can I throw in a bit of a curve ball and ask what people think of the Bugaboo Buffalo? It seems to me to be essentially a bigger more rugged Chameleon - which is attractive to me at 5'10". It'll need to handle rough pathways on walks near where I live. You can get all terrain wheels for the Chameleon but the Buffalo is the same price as Chameleon + wheels. I need to decide and buy pretty soon so any views gratefully received!

MrsArthurWellesley · 21/01/2014 10:56

Eeyore I think you'll find that we're all real people Wink

Julietee · 21/01/2014 11:04

Choccy It didn't seem as handle-able to me when I tried it, but yeah, we were considering that too. Plus I was told by John Lewis saleswoman that it would be difficult around supermarkets etc, but who knows?

Don'tlet Thankyou! Argh, there's so many to choose from. Thanks for the mountain buggy suggestion.

Is it a brand new one? a quick look and it seems the front wheels are now bigger like the Vista, so they seem to be learning from the best

Julietee · 21/01/2014 11:10

Yes, would be a new one.

The Bugaboo Cameleon is lovely. My DH is 6'4" and has no problems as the handle extends. It's been great on snow, rough terrain and it's very versatile. I love mine.

greentshirt · 21/01/2014 11:15

I thought the buffalo was HUGE in real life, couldn't believe how big it was. It's also 3kg heavier than the chameleon I think off the top of my head.

We went for the vista as it was lighter in terms of a full system, folds down easily, you can fold it with the seat still on. We are both tall too 5'10 and 6'1 and it feels a good height for us.

I must admit I prefer the look of the bugaboo, the vista deffo isn't as easy on the eye as that or the I candy models but it's not the Which best buy for nothing!

ChoccyPud · 21/01/2014 11:29

Thanks all. Yes I'm worried about how big it is. Fine for outdoor use, but not as versatile for use in town. I'm expecting LO to be tall so was thinking bigger pushchair = longer lasting but that's not the only thing to think of is it... I'm off to look at the vista now!

ChicaMomma · 21/01/2014 11:32

Greenshirt, do you think the Vista would fit in the back of a Golf??
I am unsure whether i'll need to trade in my Golf for a car with a bigger boot.. i wouldnt have thought so- but i'm not sure, as a FTM!

MrsArthurWellesley · 21/01/2014 11:44

Chica not sure how big a golf is but the vista fits in my old Citroen xsara hatchback (not a Picasso), albeit with room for little else.

HazleNutt · 21/01/2014 11:47

DH, who mostly uses our Bugaboo, is 6'4'' and does not find it too low. It is really easy to handle. We use ours during dog walks on mud and gravel paths, no issues there.
Only thing - if you want to use it for shopping or carry a lot of things with you, then the basket is almost impossible to access with the carrycot attached (fine with seat).

greentshirt · 21/01/2014 11:50

Not sure about a golf, we have a civic and it will fit in fine. You can easily take the wheels off the vista if you need a bit more space. I would have thought a golf would be ok, these types of cars are all of a muchness I expect!

EeyoreIsh · 21/01/2014 11:59

I meant tall not real! I'm sure shorter people are real too! Grin
