Anti Colic Injection??

Hi ladies

I got a very vague email from a friend saying another friend of ours has gotten an 'anti colic injection' during her pregnancy, she's in the 3rd Tri now and got it last week (in a private maternity hospital in dublin)
Apparently it limits the likelihood of the baby getting colic when they are born.

I've tried to google it and cant find anything- I'm not seeing my consultant until mid Feb either. In the meantime, has anyone heard of this? Do they know the name of the drug?

I would be very suspicious of injections and immunisations in general (i wouldnt get the flu jab while pregnant for eg) but i'm interested nonetheless, just from an information perspective more than anything.

If you/she definitely heard correctly then this sounds like a massive pile of crap. Colic is now understood not to be a "thing" you can get (or avoid); it's the symptom ie crying 3hrs+ 3+ nights a week in young babies. Various theories about it eg gastric pain/wind; tongue tie causing pain/wind; wanting to be held more; being overtired; etc. Google colic & Dr Harvey Karp for one overview, hope this is helpful!

Completely agree- and more to the point, it she does manage to avoid colic there will be something else anyway, like reflux or something- you cant legislate against everything. Was just interested to see if anyone had heard of it/knew the name of it. Have gone back to her to ask for more detail. I'd be VERY slow to take any injection at all- one word- THALIDOMIDE!

Iv had the flu jab and whooping cough jab, why wouldnt you have any immunisations just out of interest??

ChicaMomma · 21/01/2014 10:36

Mummytobe, i'll be honest and say it's not based on anything scientific at all. I'm just that kind of person. I've never had the flu jab, nor have i ever had the actual flu. My midwife is pregnant and said she didnt/wouldnt get it so that was enough for me. As i said, personal choice and personal gut instinct, not based in any way on scientific evidence at all. I've no doubt the flu jab is absolutely fine but i dont like injecting myself with disease if i can help it. I know there are risks if you get the flu, which could end up being more catastrophic, but i am a big believer in trusting your gut as it's never let me down in life!

Oh ok, i checked the NHS website which said it was perfectly fine to have the flu jab so i had it done before christmas, i have always had it done as one year i was so poorly with the flu i just couldnt face getting it again, pregnant or not! Smile
Thank you for replying, its funny when you read others thoughts i suddenly thought oh my god what have i done, should i have researched more etc etc.

PenguinsDontEatKale · 21/01/2014 12:37

I haven't had the flu jab, purely because it has never quite made it to the top of my 'to do' list (I don't think I've had flu in about 20 years, so it's not high priority).

I will be prioritising the whooping cough jab when the time goes, because it is such a horrid, horrid illness.

On the colic, there is no such thing as an anti colic injection. Smile

Ha, I wish there was! If there was, we'd all have one!

TobyLerone · 21/01/2014 13:19

OP, will you br immunising your baby?

ChicaMomma · 21/01/2014 14:35

TobyLerone it's definitely something I want to research a lot more. From what i've read so far, most of them are absolutely fine and very much recommended- some arent necessary. All the ones i got as a kid myself (MMR etc) are obviously completely fine, but it is something i do want to research a lot more. What do you think yourself?

Wasnt there an anti MS/HG injection yrs back that caused mild birth deformities?

OP posts:
PenguinsDontEatKale · 21/01/2014 16:06

Chica - I presume you are thinking of thalidomide? It caused horrible life changing deformities. The thalidomide scandal resulted in a lot of changes in how pregnant women are prescribed medication.

In terms of immunisations, which are you thinking of as 'not necessary'? Maybe people could give more detailed answers?

ChicaMomma · 21/01/2014 16:14

I thought there was a more recent MS/HG one too- not relating to thalidomide and not as serious. But you're right, i'm being too vague, i accept that!

Similarly, i need to do a LOT more research on the vax for baby. The reasons i'm not giving detailed answers is because i dont know them yet- but i'm very distrusting of medics in general so will be making up my own mind. I'm sure the medics all insisted the shot that caused Thalido was fine too! But you are of course right, things have come a long way since then, that's what, 30 yrs ago or more? 40?

I'm only 18 weeks so have lots of time to research it.

PenguinsDontEatKale · 21/01/2014 16:23

I'm not aware of a more recent scandal. Others may know. Thalidomide was early 1960's, so more like 50 years ago.

Vaccination can be a contentious subject and if you go on the boards on here you will here all sorts of extremely strong views and opinions. There are people for whom vaccination is at the core of their parenting and moral beliefs. There is also a spectrum of comments from genuine concerns to conspiracy theories. So if you are going to dive in, just be prepared!

ChicaMomma · 21/01/2014 16:29

I will certainly dive in- with my eyes open!

Given all my friends and family have followed the vaccination schedules with no issues, i'll probably end up doing the same- they never did me (or any of my family) any harm after all- but i do seem to remember seeing one source that said 1 or 2 of them were simply not required. Really must start bookmarking this stuff! My current obsession is the labour part, i've no doubt that at some point in the near future it'll switch to vaccinations so i'll know a lot more then- but i'd like to think it'll never form the core of my parenting and moral beliefs either, that's just not necessary! There are more important things really..
