Waters breaking whilst swimming

This might be a really stupid question but as a first timer I have no idea!!!

That's me now on mat leave at 36 weeks and plan to go swimming most days if I can as it really helps the sick feeling that has never gone away!! What I would like to know is, if waters breaking is the first sign of labour that I get (and my ante natal classes have said that this is not usually the first sign), then if I'm in the pool will I know? Do you feel them?

My waters going was the last thing that happened in both my labours, and five minutes later my babies were born. Both in a birth pool. There was a very audible pop and I just knew. I don't think you would miss it even if you were in the public bathsGrin

SaucyJack · 20/01/2014 18:57

I have no idea tbh. FWIW I didn't notice my waters going with either of my two older DDs, and I was on dry land with them both.

I think the big Niagara Falls gush only happens in pre-watershed family comedies on BBC1.

wightjellybaby · 20/01/2014 19:00

This probably isnt what you want to hear if you really want to go swimming but waters breaking was the only part of labour I experienced followed with hours in hospital waiting for contractions then getting induced which didnt do anything followed by a c-section to get dd out!

MirandaWest · 20/01/2014 19:02

With DS my waters breaking was the first sign of labour and it was spectacular Grin. Woke me up and there was a flood all over the bed. I was glad I was already in hospital due to suspected pre eclampsia.

With DD I had them broken a little while before I gave birth.

LightastheBreeze · 20/01/2014 19:02

My waters broke before labour and it was just a small trickle a bit like wetting ones self slightly. I think its quite rare for the whole lot to go.

adagio · 20/01/2014 19:04

last thing that happened for me too just before her head arrived

wonkylegs · 20/01/2014 19:04

They trickle out for ages so you'd probably notice once you got out.
I had a proper telly style dramatic gush, which then trickled for about an hour.
Mine was a particular surprise as I was sitting finishing off a painting for the nursery wall and as I got up to wash the brushes, they broke all over my study carpet. Baby wasn't due for another 4wks!!

NakedTigarCub · 20/01/2014 19:10

How do I put this nicely.....

Onve your waters brake they keep going untill your baby is born, in my case 24 hours.

You will know cos every time you stand up or move a gush of water will leave your body.

I had to walk 2miles in the.hospital at 9pm to the labour ward to be told yes my waters have gone and sent home to wait for labour to start Shock

You can buy maternaty sheets from mothercare to put on the bed incase this happens.

Also there is no such thing as a pain free labour they stop the epidural so you can feel when to push anf it hurts alot Sad

Morning sickness is really all day for 9 months sickness and yes you will wee and poo in labour with mw there Blush

Its no wounder I didnt bloom or glow Grin I just wish someone had told me the above my first time!

NakedTigarCub · 20/01/2014 19:14
  • 2 miles leaking water along the corridor behind me and soaking wet jeans Sad
WhyAreYouSoLazy · 20/01/2014 19:17

I had a dramatic gush of waters as the first sign of impending labour. Couldn't have missed that, even in a pool. And as others have said, the waters kept going in for hours after!

LightastheBreeze · 20/01/2014 19:17

Ooh, I remember the walking round the hospital leaking as it is supposed to bring labour on, in my case it didn't and I had to be induced with the drip thingy about 10 hours later.

Ilovemydogandmydoglovesme · 20/01/2014 19:22

I had to have my waters broken for me in the later stages of labour, both times. First signs were always contractions.

Just as an aside, the pool people will not appreciate you telling them your waters broke in the water. They will probably have to clean the pool. Grin

You can't miss it though. Feels like the most massive and continuous wee you ever did in your life!

blushingmare · 20/01/2014 19:38

My waters breaking was the first thing to happen, but it wasn't a big gush, more like the feeling of getting loads of discharge Blush But they continues to trickle for hours after so you would notice when you got out I reckon.

Wallison · 20/01/2014 19:45

This is ime only but mine kept on leaking for a couple of days until they eventually induced me. I did have a big gush to start with which was very dramatic, but your body produces more fluid and once they have broken they keep on coming out. I had to wear pads! So even if they do break in the pool and even if you don't notice at the time (and I can see how you might not as it doesn't hurt and you'd be moving and exercising), you would notice afterwards as you would keep on losing fluid. So in your shoes I would go swimming if you want to.

Wallison · 20/01/2014 19:54

Oh yes and another thing I noticed was that my bump felt different - don't know if it was just psychological because I knew my waters had gone and was starting to feel anxious (baby was prem) but that really solid rounded feeling was gone and I could feel the baby's limbs more and he seemed to be sort of hanging all wrong. So you would know.

waterlego6064 · 20/01/2014 19:58

In both of my labours, my waters went very near the end of labour- just as the pushing started. Both times, there was a huge gush. I was in the birth pool the second time and yes, I felt the whoosh! It was a really strange sensation.

Sanch1 · 20/01/2014 20:24

You might miss the initial gush, mine when spectacularly at home in bed, but you may feel a pop, but in any case they will continue to trickle out all through Labour every time you move, stand, walk etc!

JassyRadlett · 20/01/2014 20:28

Mine went in spectacular gushing fashion in triage on the labour midwife, just as the admitting midwife said 'I think your waters will go pretty soon.' She and DH jumped back about a foot, it was pretty spectacular. DS rocked up 4 hours later. (I'd already been in labour for 24 hours.)

Poppins27 · 20/01/2014 20:35

My waters broke in the bath with my Dd, and I was very definitely aware of it, was an intense popping feeling that could be heard too...but I had been having regular contractions too so I was kind of expecting it!!

I loved swimming when pregnant too...dislike it greatly usually!! Smile

WeAllHaveWings · 20/01/2014 20:41

I woke one morning and felt a little wet down below and thought I'd had an "accident". Went to get up and felt it getting wetter, so laid back down and got dh to bring me a hand towel and waddled to the toilet clenching as much as possible with the towel between my legs with my dh looking on in horror.

Waters trickled out for the next 2 days, with the odd surge when I went to the loo. I used maternity pads to soak up during that time as the flow was very variable.

The beauty of childbirth.

notso · 20/01/2014 20:49

I felt them go. With DC1 it was only the hind waters so just a tiny popping sensation and then a mini gush.
With DC3 and DC4 it was a loud squelchy pop in the middle of the night loud enough to wake me up followed buy hours of gushing on every movement. It was particularly bad with DC3 as I was carrying too much fluid, I went through all my clean PJ's and my maternity pads.

superram · 20/01/2014 20:52

I was asleep when mine went at 37 weeks. As far as I know there was no 'pop' just damp pants. The comedy gush happened when I stood up. Not sure if I would have known in the water. I had no contractions though so other than the massive risk of infection I wouldn't have had the baby in the changing room.

Second baby, contractions for 4 hours before emcs-no waters broken.
