Why do first timers get more appointments?

Things can still go wrong in subsequent pregnancies too!! I think women should all be entitled to equal checks.

This is dd2. I saw the consultant at 16 weeks, 20 week scan and don't get checked again until 28 weeks which is 12 weeks of not checking me. I know this is a standard schedule, but why?

Not sure, but boy am I pleased. Mw appts are a pita for getting time off work esp as I now have dc1 who is always geting ill etc.

No idea really either. I was told by the midwife at my 18ish week check that if i wanted to come in before the 28 week check to just phone & make an appointment as its such a long time & they would be happy to do a normal check-up appointment (bp, wee test, heart beat etc). I'm consultant led anyway so have had a few extra appointments with them.

I've had the same number (and will actually end up having more as I'm on shard care this time instead of midwife led).

Maybe because there isn't a lot for them to do in between and they expect you to contact them if there's a problem?

EdithWeston · 19/01/2014 10:00

Lucky you.

If you have any complications, in current or previous PGs, you are seen frequently and it's nerve-wracking.

I used to dream wishfully of normal results and standard timing.

Sammie101 · 19/01/2014 10:01

Jayne things can go wrong that people may not know about eg blood pressure, urine tests. It's not exactly something you can check at home

MyNameIsWinkly · 19/01/2014 10:02

I'm expecting DC1 and have the same number of appointments as you tea, apart from a glucose tolerance test. My 16 week appointment was with a midwife not a consultant. How many more appointments should I have?

Signs of pre eclampsia (just for example) arent obvious in the early stages and the woman wouldnt neccessarily feel any ill effects before it progresses. Therefore regular checks would pick up subtle signs and nip it in the bud so to speak before it can get worse.
I agree wih the op that subsequent pregnancies deserve the same attenion and first timers, but it is probably all down to cost cutting within the nhs.
Im now on dc 3 and am also under consultant led care as i will be having a planned c section, yet i still havnt been offered more regular checks, its disgusting.
I dont considet this dc any less important than the two dc i already have so why the nhs doest place the same value on siblings is beyond me!

peace I too am having a planned section and am consultant led. But my appts with him this far have been at 16 weeks and will be at 34 weeks, so just him instead of a MW. They aren't extra. All pregnancies are totally different. Yes we can keep tabs on movement, watch out for a headache etc but not much else. It's worrying really.

I'm 25 weeks with my 3rd DC, and I feel like I've hardly seen anyone this time. I had the booking in, the midwife at the same time as the first scan at 12 weeks, then my midwife again at 15 weeks. This week at 24 weeks I have seen a consultant and a midwife.
