Bleeding at 5 weeks - what do I do?

Please help. I tested positive on Tuesday and my partner and I were overjoyed. I booked a GP appointment for 3 Feb to confirm everything and work out what I need to do re my pregnancy care (this is my first time). I woke up this morning with really bad cramps and I'm now bleeding. I calculate that I'm 5 weeks pregnant so it's too late for implantation bleeding. Am I miscarrying? What do I do? Do I go to my local GP on Monday? I feel fine now but I am bleeding like a period.

Will my GP order tests or an ultrasound? What am I entitled to? I'm scared.

You might be miscarrying, although some people do bleed heavily without that. Is there an early pregnancy unit near you? Some need a GP referral, but you can self-refer to others. It's probably too early for them to scan you, but they might offer blood tests to see if your levels are going up or down.

I'm really sorry to hear you're experiencing this. There are cases of women bleeding as you describe but it isn't a great sign. I'd contact your GP or EPU (early pregnancy unit) at your chosen hospital. They'll probably want to do a scan at some point to check what's going on.

Good luck Thanks

As awful as it sounds, there isn't a lot you can do. {{{hug}}}
At this stage you're in the hands of the gods.
EPU probably wont scan you until 6 weeks or so because other than making sure you aren't ectopic, there isn't much to see at 5 weeks. And whatever they do see, there really isn't anything that can be done to prevent a MC.
Sit tight, try not to worry, impossible I know and see what develops.
Having been there, I really hope that everything works out for you. It often does. Plenty of women have early bleeding and healthy pgs. x

It doesn't sound good this early, I'm afraid. If it helps at all - though I know that nothing really will right now - I went through exactly the same horrible experience 5 years ago and type this cuddling my adorable 4 year old DS who was conceived within a month afterwards. I doubt that you will be given a scan this early; your GP is likely to tell you to wait for your next cycle before you TTC again - advice which my hormones refused to heed! Just necessitated a dating scan when I did actually become pg. Hope you're ok and well looked after this evening.

Oh goodness! Realise last post sounded horribly fatal! Just trying to give hope IF all not well. A million wishes that all is fine x

Thanks everyone for your support. I keep trying not to think about it but can't think of anything else. Feel devastated even though I know this may not be the end, but… it's the lack of control, not knowing what's going on in my body and not being able to do anything about it. I appreciate you taking the time to respond to my post. I hope to share positive news in the future.

I had really bad period pains and bleeding and was referred to EPU for a scan- know the date of last period so thought I was 6 weeks but the sonographer thought I had ovulated late and the bleeding was implantation bleeding at 5 weeks - was sure I was m/c - has your bleeding slowed down?

PrincessButtercup · 21/01/2014 08:40

How are you doing? Hope all ok.
