Has anyone stuck to the 2 NHS (12 and 20 weeks) scans only?

I am a first time mum to be and it seems to me like everyone pays for extra scans (4d etc) over and above the 2 free NHS ones. Although I would love any chance of another scan they seem a lot of money to pay. What did you all do and do you think I'm mad not to pay for more?

I just had the 2 NHS ones with both babies, not sure many people. watch the 4d video thy get?

Northumberlandlass · 18/01/2014 17:27

I only had 2 scans but it was 10 years ago. It didn't occur to me I needed more

5madthings · 18/01/2014 17:28

Wi no 1 and no 2 thats all I had, actually the nhs gaveme extra scans near end of rpeg re size concerns.

With ds3, ds4 and dd I paid privatley for an nt scan as I was too young to get it for free, with dd we als paid for a 3d scan at 28 wks purely as the 20 wk scan had shown she was a gilr and we didnt believe it after four boys, we still didnt believe it till she was born btu we took our four boys to the scan and it was nice for them to see their sister :)

If we ever have another I will jsut have the nhs scans, I would also qualify for an nt scan in my area now as I am 35 tomorrow which is their cut off age!

I've only had the NHS ones. I was desperate to see the baby at 12 weeks and the wait until the 20 week one felt like FOREVER. I thought if want private scans too but since the baby has been moving (since 16/18 weeks) I've felt reassured and bonded in that way. So another scan hasn't felt necessary. If that makes sense?

DetentionExtension · 18/01/2014 17:29

I only had what I was advised to have - in my case that was 3 due to a previous ectopic. Although I would have happily looked at the baby many more times, I didn't have that kind of money - and also I'm not sure how I would ever decided what was enough!

I have seen a few 3/4d scans that are very strange and much prefer the normal 2d ones.

I think it's one of those situations where everyone will do what's right for them, as should you. Good luck.

YesAnastasia · 18/01/2014 17:31

yes, just the two. I was happy with that. I think the 3D ones are a bit creepy but maybe I wouldn't if it was my own..?

Andcake · 18/01/2014 17:32

I only had the nhs ones but my hospital also did one at I think 35 weeks. I saw them as medical things and they always frightened the life out of me that something wrong would be found. I don't know many people who had more than those. Glad I had the last one as they discovered ds was breech despite the fact that 30 mins before mw had felt bump and said all was good and ds was engaged!

mrsbug · 18/01/2014 17:34

I only had the NHS scans, that's normal ime.

I had an extra early scan due to bleeding but could only see a blob.

OrganixAddict · 18/01/2014 17:35

i only had the two NHS ones (in fact 1 with my first as they didn't do 12 week ones then where I live).

I didn't know you could pay for more but don't think I would have done it if I'd known. I found it hard to make much out on the scans tbh but each to their own - if you can afford it and want too, why not?

bebopanddoowop · 18/01/2014 17:35

Yep I'm a first timer at 28 weeks so far and seeing as the 12 and 20 wk scans were post fine and didn't alert anything unusual I'll just stick to those two. If something comes up for cause to be concerned then they'll want to do another one anyway won't they so I'm just going with what they tell me.

Lollypop1983 · 18/01/2014 17:37

I only had Nhs scans.

12 week normal
20 week, couldn't see baby's heart...couldn't rule out any problems so had to go back for 23 week scan

Also had 36 week scan to check growth, as I'm overweight.

Thought about having a 3/4d scan, but baby was fine, so didn't bother.

MotherOfInsomniacToddlers · 18/01/2014 17:38

With both mine I just had the 12 and 20 week scans. I think the 3d ones are creepy personally!!!

JazzAnnNonMouse · 18/01/2014 17:41

We only had they two - no need for others IMO

HarrietSchulenberg · 18/01/2014 17:41

2 with dses 1 and 3, 3 with ds2 as he needed an extra one due to low lying placenta. I only had what I needed/NHS advised.

I don't like the 3D ones. As I said on another thread earlier today, my cousin had one and her baby looked like a potato. Everyone was very relieved when he was born and actually looked very, well, baby-like.

StuckOnARollercoaster · 18/01/2014 17:43

Only had the 2 NHS ones. I didn't feel like I wanted more for the cost (although wouldn't say no if it was free!)
I could feel her in my belly and that was enough for me, and I was happy to wait till she was born to see her properly.
(I might be odd though - as I'm not like my friends constantly taking photos - I prefer to be in the moment experiencing it rather than getting the camera out!)

bakingtins · 18/01/2014 17:44

I just had 2 scans with my prev 2 children, but did pay for private OSCAR screening for Downs etc as my NHS trust didn't offer it (nuchal scan + bloods) instead of the NHS 12 week scan. Since then I've had problems with recurrent miscarriage and in this pregnancy have had 7 scans up to the 20 week mark Blush but all but one of those (OSCAR again) have been on NHS. I'll be having growth scans later because of medication I've been on.
If I had not been under the recurrent miscarriage clinic I would have paid for an 8 week scan, I think that can be v reassuring if you are anxious in first trimester and if all is good at that point MC risk drops to 3%. I wouldn't pay for a later 3d scan, once I've been reassured at anomaly scan that all is ok and can feel baby moving I don't see the need, but I don't have any problem with other people choosing to have them.

Writerwannabe83 · 18/01/2014 17:45

I had a private one at 7 weeks because of how impatient me and DH were and it cost £50. DH then said that because I'd paid for that he'd pay for a private sexing scan at 16 weeks Smile

NHS wise I've had scans at 8, 10, 12, 20 and 28 weeks. Will be having them at 32, 36 and 38 weeks too Smile

He's a very photographed baby Smile

BananaPie · 18/01/2014 17:48

I think you'd be mad to pay to have more than what's offered on the nhs! Plenty of time to see the baby when it's born (and plenty of things to spend money on then too...)

pourmeanotherglass · 18/01/2014 17:48

I only had the one NHS one when I had mine. (12 weeks wasn't free). I didn't really see a need for more.
I also had a 41 week scan with DD1 (on NHS, to check there was enough water, but couldn't see much on that one)

talulahbelle · 18/01/2014 17:49

I've had 4 in the first trimester (6,8,10,12 weeks) due to recurrent miscarriage/previous ectopic, all NHS I'm now 13 weeks and the wait till the next at 20 seems an age. Determined not to spend the money getting any private ones done, although DH has said if they can't give us the gender at 20 weeks he'd be happy to have a 3D gender scan done..

lastnightopenedmyeyes · 18/01/2014 17:49

I've only ever had the standard nhs scans. Almost everyone I know has done the same.

Cupcake11 · 18/01/2014 17:50

Paid for a private one at 8 weeks, had the 12 and 20 weeks NHS ones and have another NHS one at 32 weeks - our hospital does an extra one for some reason.

radiatormesh · 18/01/2014 17:50

#1 - early private scan (8wks) then 12wk and 20wk on the NHS

#2 - early private scan (8wks), 12wks (NHS), 13wks (private - NHS came back with a raised Down's risk so we went for an indepth scan which greatly reduced the risk), then every 2wks from 20wks (private - we were in the US by that point and they scanned at every possible opportunity in order to bill your insurance)

Don't bother with 4d: your baby will just look like a cauliflower. You will see what s/he looks like soon enough.

We're currently ttc #3 and I will go for an early reassurance scan before the 12wk, but that will be it. Once the baby's wriggling around that's enough of a reminder of its presence for me.

Congratulations!!

thecakeisalie · 18/01/2014 17:51

Ds1 - 12, 20, 24 (because we didn't get all the measurements at 20 wk) and 36 week growth scan all on the nhs.
Ds2 - 12, 20 on nhs and paid for a private gender scan at 16 weeks which I felt was a complete waste of money, it was so rushed and not a great experience.

Now 30 weeks with dc3 and have had 12, 20, 23 (again because we didn't get all the measurements at 20wk). I will also be having a 32 and 36 week growth scans because of my bmi.

If I wasn't classed as high risk I wouldn't pay for private scans in between. I figure I'd rather spend that money getting things for the baby than on a scan.

stopgap · 18/01/2014 17:51

My last pregnancy I only had 12 and 20 week scans, and I wish it were the case this time, as I think the fewer the better.

But due to GD I've had twice-weekly scans from week 30 onwards.
