Measuring 5 weeks too big. Freaking out.

I'm 27 weeks, measuring 33. Growth scan has been booked for 27th as that's the soonest they could see me. Also I'm having the GTT on the same day.
Generally very worried.
Im either going to have diabetes or a huge baby aren't I?
I had a growth scan with dd1 due to a prolonged illness and they predicted a big baby but she was 6lb12, but I was measuring normally that time.

Freaking out.

I had this from 28 weeks, measured 5/6 weeks ahead. GTT was normal, (they made me do it twice as it was so normal), growth scan was ok. Baby was totally normal but I had polyhydramnios (too much amniotic fluid). It can mean there is something wrong with the baby but nothing they could see wrong on the scan.

It all balanced itself out at 36 weeks and I went back to measuring normally again.

Baby was born at 40+5, just over 7lbs.

It's shit and worrying but it doesn't mean there is anything wrong. Don't panic Thanks

Can I ask what they base it on when they say you are measuring too many weeks ahead? I see a lot of women saying this and wonder what makes the midwife say it?

In terms of growth I think it Is all very hit and miss. I had a growth scan 2 weeks ago (due to medication I'm on) and according to their measurements and their charting on my graph, baby is sitting well above the 90th percentile for his size. However, I saw my midwife yesterday and based on her findings and chart plotting the baby is sitting just below the 50th percentile - so a huge discrepancy. I asked her about it and she said that so many factors can alter the perceived size of the baby and until baby is actually born and weighed nobody can really guess or predict a weight.

Try not to worry - I'm sure everything will be fine x

I measured a month behind baby small but not crazy small human measurement isn't everything. Try to stop worrying ;-)

purplemurple1 · 17/01/2014 20:55

Human = bump

Pinkbell123 · 17/01/2014 20:56

I've had this too. GDD came back negative just growing a big baby! Had a scan this week (35 weeks) and still measuring 6 weeks ahead (estimated weight of baby 7.5lb) we have another scan in two weeks time when the consultant will go through our options but it's just one of those things. Some people grow bigger babies. You are still early days though so it might settle down growth wise.

Pinkbell123 · 17/01/2014 20:57

GTT not GDD!

lilyaldrin · 17/01/2014 20:58

Writer - when they measure your bump (from the pubic bone to the top of the uterus) they allow roughly a cm per week, so at 30 weeks it should be 30cm.

Ja9 · 17/01/2014 21:00

i also measured big with first pg from about 20 weeks. i can remember coming home and crying and freaking out with worry. Continued to measure big until ds was born at 38+2 and he was a very cute 6lb 11. A lot of needless worry...

Whiteshoes · 17/01/2014 21:01

Another person who had polyhydramnios that resolved itself without any explanation. I was having growth scans every month anyway so I was unworried, but without the scans it would have appeared that baby grew like topsy and then stopped growing. Seems like it can just happen.Try not to worry.

Inglori0us · 17/01/2014 21:18

Thanks all. This was the first time I've been measured. It was by a registrar at what was supposed to be my consultant appt (difficult last pregnancy so they're keeping an eye

Sorry! Posted too soon.

I know bump is much bigger than last time.
I'm going to try to put it from my mind for now.

Thanks for the reassurance!

I grow big babies, gtt test negative and am measuring 5 weeks ahead. My ds was 9lb, my dd was 10.9lb, am hoping this one might be my smallest, doubt it :)

Inglori0us · 17/01/2014 22:25

Eek Pip. My first was a tiddler. Was hoping for another little one. (:

lily - thanks for the explanation. I was 29+4 when my midwife measured my bump and I was 29cm. So why is she saying my baby is going to be small yet the hospital are saying he's going to be big? Hmm It's a mystery Grin

pinkbunny2012 · 18/01/2014 23:25

I was measuring 6 weeks small with my dd and it corrected itself. She was born at 35 weeks weighing 5lbs 7oz which is a great weight for the many weeks she was, so try not to worry :)

AnythingNotEverything · 18/01/2014 23:47

I measured ahead from 27 weeks. I had a growth scan at 31 weeks which confirmed polyhydramnios and my GTT and TORCH screening were all negative.

Just one of those things. There was something of a flood when they broke my waters Shock

Measuring big isn't in itself a bad thing. They'll have a look at your scan, but it's the curve they plot on the chart that shows whether your bump (and therefore baby) is growing as they would expect.

Inglori0us · 19/01/2014 09:51

Thanks. I had a midwife appt last night and she measured my bump only 2 weeks ahead (it was a registrar who measured 5 weeks over on Friday) so it's more likely to be fluid.

Got a week to wait for GTT and scan so going to try to just get on with things until then. (:
