Burns' Night approaches... Can I eat haggis in pregnancy? I can't seem to find a definitive answer by googling. I know some recipes contain liver so there would be the vitamin A issue.

Any idea?

There is no vitamin A issue. You need vit a to sustain a healthy pregnancy. Caveat - eat 500 and it's on your own head! ;-)

If you're north-east why not have mealy pudding if it makes you feel better?

Yama · 17/01/2014 19:55

I remember staying at a really posh hotel in Edinburgh and having haggis as part of my full Scottish. It wasn't until later that I thought perhaps I shouldn't have done that. Dh had to reassure me somewhat.

So, to summarise - I dunno.

Vitamin A toxicity is an issue.

It's a formal sit down Burns' supper with no other option. I could ask for vege haggis but everyone knows I'm not a vegetarian. I'm in early pg so it's not common knowledge.

Cannae beat a tasty Macsween haggis - doesnt say anything about liver on it although one helping of it would not cause any harm even if it did contain liver.

ilovepowerhoop · 17/01/2014 20:01

vitamin A toxicity is not really an issue if you are only having one helping on one night of the year

BikeRunSki · 17/01/2014 20:03

It's just an uber sausage isn't it? Surely I helping oh haggis is it going to have toxic levels of vit A?

Expectingtwins1975 · 17/01/2014 20:17

Good question! I never even considered I wouldn't be able to eat haggis. Although I have to say ... vegetarian haggis is also really really tasty - I more than often go for that option anyways - just tell people you've fancied trying the veggie one for a while if anyone asks

PixelAteMyFace · 17/01/2014 20:18

I would have thought one portion of haggis would not present a great risk.

FWIW when I was pregnant back in the olden days before internet, and not in the uk, I was never told to avoid liver and ate it almost every week all through pregnancy, thinking it was good for the baby!

My DC are all fine.

Just don't eat a whole haggis by yourself!

BEEwitched · 17/01/2014 20:22

Haggis once won't do any damage - in other countries guidelines say liver is fine to eat once a week after the first trimester.

Fmshields · 17/01/2014 20:28

I asked my midwife when I was pregnant as I love haggis! She said it was OK as it didn't have much liver in it, and it's not something you east regularly. So enjoy it [

FraterculaArctica · 17/01/2014 20:29

Ooh I am glad this thread has appeared! I have been wondering this - love haggis!

BaldHedgehog · 17/01/2014 22:05

Got one in the fridge, can"t wait!Haggis, neeps and tatties,no whisky though ;)

BEEwitched · 17/01/2014 22:07

We live in Ulster Scots country, you've made me hungry for Haggis now, I'll need to find a pub nearby that does a decent Burns supper!

bugoven · 18/01/2014 09:08

Oh I so want some haggis now. Not sure I'm restrained enough to limit myself to one portion though. Thankfully I am currently too nauseous to leave my bed so baby is safe from the uber sausage. That really made me laugh bike Grin

stargirl1701 · 20/01/2014 19:09

Right, I'm just going to eat the normal haggis. Thank you for all your responses.
