Job interview when pregnant?

babsie007 · 17/01/2014 13:32

Does anyone have any experience or advice for interviewing for a job during pregnancy?

I am an account manager currently working for a software firm and I have applied for a role with Philips selling medical devices.

Sorry, I posted without finishing!!!

I am going through an agency who know I am
On mat leave but they haven't asked any questions about if I am currently pregnant etc. I guess they have to be careful of that from a legal standpoint.

I wasn't sure if I should tell them or just keep
Quiet. I guess the one thing is that I don't want to shock the interviewers at Philips if I'm successful in getting an interview!! Don't really want to waste anyone's time I guess.

I can only go by my experience but i when for several interviews while between 20-24 week's and when i said i was pregnant i got different reactions

One was " if i knew you were pregnant i wouldn't have bothered calling you for an interview" (very rude woman)
"call us after you've had the baby and we may have something" (yeh right)
"we cant take you as it is against health and safety" (understandable as the job was potentially dangerous)

It might be best to decide after you have met them for the interview they always ask at the end is there anything else you would like to tell us and you could mention it then if you wanted to

Also that way if they do want you it probably wont make any difference as you've had the interview already Smile

I did I was only 7 weeks so didnt tell them. It was all good loved the job went back post maternity etc.

babsie007 · 17/01/2014 14:26

I guess I should also add that it will be a bit of an elephant in the room as I'm already 39+1!!!!

Yes, I was interviewed for my current job at 8.5 months pregnant!

babsie007 · 17/01/2014 14:30

That's good to hear leobear! What sort of company was it if you don't mind me asking? This is a global bluechip so
Hoping they will be more open minded than a smaller business.

What kind of reaction did you get at interview?

I'd rather not say, for fear of outing myself, but a senior position at a major organisation.

They knew I was pregnant (obviously) when the whole process started, and they just proceeded as normal, but we talked about when I would be able to start etc. in the end they waited for me, and I joined when DD was 5 months old.

babsie007 · 17/01/2014 14:36

That's really good. I wasn't trying to pry there but was interested to know more the size of company.

Hopefully they won't feel that having a newborn will be an issue...

Is this your first baby?

babsie007 · 17/01/2014 14:42

Yes it is

I guess from a personal perspective, nothing to do with the legal stuff, bear in mind that you don't know whether the baby will be a sleeper/how soon you will physically feel able to work etc. but I wish you all the very best, pregnancy should not affect your prospects.

babsie007 · 17/01/2014 15:10

Thank you. Yes I have tried to think of all those things and I know it may not make starting a new job very easy. I'm prepared to take a punt and hope for the best. I can't afford to be off for any longer so I will be returning to my old job at least.

Currently job hunting in first trimester, and I wonder, is it legal for a company to discriminate against you because you're pregnant?

Obviously not if you are applying to be a bouncer or something dangerous!

babsie007 · 17/01/2014 15:17

They can't legally but it's hard to prove as they can obviously discount you for other reasons. If you aren't showing, I wouldn't tell!! You don't have to tell your employer straight away anyway.

I sadly look like I'm having twins so no chance of hiding it... Shock

Ferretsrfum -
Really shocked that someone actually said they wouldn't have brought you forward to interview if they had known!!!! Cheeky sods. Takes all sorts I guess.

I have had a google and there do seem to be some good stories out there too of people who interviewed during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester so I guess there is hope if the employer is professional enough!!

babsie Yeah that was the plan!

I thought so, I just wondered after I read the "if I knew you were pregnant I wouldn't have bothered calling you for an interview" reaction above. That was a pretty stupid thing to say.

babsie007 · 17/01/2014 15:48

I know! I think everyone will have different reactions. I know that my employer ideally steer clear of potential pregnancies... Regarding a particular recruit, they did tell the hiring manager to try and find out of any future plans they had to have a baby. Ended up that the woman in question had no interest in getting pregnant, but she still ended up being off on the sick for 5 months with work related stress which in my book was worse as we get full pay when on sick after probation period!

When I was a recruiter I had clients that were quite open about not hiring women of childbearing age but others really weren't bothered at all. I think it will really depends on the company and hiring manager. I guess if you are waiting until you get an offer to disclose, it does offer you some more protection as they would have to have fairly strong grounds to withdraw the offer!!!

good luck babsie - I think that you are in a very different position to many others who are still in the early/mid stages.

At 39+1 its probably wont even be an issue as long as you can start work when they require the position to be filled by and do the hours that they require they really shouldn't care. Its not like you will start and then go off on Mat leave which is what a lot of employers are worried about.

babsie007 · 17/01/2014 16:11

I really hope so mitchell2. Fingers crossed anyway! It's a great job, and I know positions with them don't come up that often which is why i didnt want to let it just pass me by.

Even my current employer though has been very non-committal regards where I will stand within the business once I return which is very frustrating. Although I have already confirm my return to work date, I think theu are afraid that I will change my mind and will take longer off, or will want to come back part time.

It's very frustrating as people don't seem to understand that financially, not everyone can afford to take a long period of time off. I am also very lucky that my husband is keen to be very hands on so he has already reduced his hours to 4 days a week, and is planning on taking some additional paternity leave once the baby is 5 months and obviously I am back to work. Because I'm the main breadwinner, we can afford to take the hit on his salary but cannot afford to take it on mine. If I was on SMP, we wouldn't even have enough to pay our mortgage, utility bills, credit card and car payments... Sad I'm not the only one in this position though and I'm sure as hell not going to be the last!

Most people seem to be very negative about the fact I'm returning to work so soon. My uncle is the only one that has applauded me for it - his wife is a career woman and returned to work within 10 weeks. He thinks it's a excellent stand to take within the work place and also a great example to set my daughter about how women really can do it all so long as they have the right support from their other half.

I just wish that the maternity/paternity leave laws were in effect already as I would return to work even sooner and let dh take off instead.
