Hello everyone!

I am 12 weeks 6 days and have had my scan this week. I know it's still very early days, but I am just looking for suggesting for little bits and bobs that I could start to buy now. Goin to leave the bigger items until later on but would like to start getting other things over the next few months so not such a huge amount of money being spent. Towards the end!

Any suggestions welcomed xx

Hello and congratulations!

In the beginning I bought some sleep suits, vests etc but I bought my first sleep suit when I got my bfp - I was just too exited! So I admire your restraint in waiting to 12 weeks! Lol!

One thing we have also done is buy a pack of nappies and wipes with every weekly shop just to build up a small supply as when you are on mat leave and earningless money these things add up!

We decorated the nursery after 20 week scan and bought the furniture, buggy, car seat etc then too. Im 28 weeks now and we have everything a baby could need (I like to be organised and I am a shopaholic!)

Honestly, I wouldn't get anything yet - just put the money aside ready for when you are further along.

Thanks for the advice :-)

I didn't get a single thing until after my 20 week scan. But mostly I waited until after Christmas (we requested vouchers from family) so the majority was purchased after 30 weeks.

I bought everything by 20 weeks. And decorated the nursery.

I know everyone has different reasons for holding off until later, (most seem to think it tempts fate) but my view was that i preferred to be organised and 'if the worst happened' furniture and clothes etc wouldn't have caused it, or made it feel any worse.

Family were mortified that i bought my pram and built it to see what it looked like incase it tempted fate but i think thats load of crap Grin

Do what you can afford and what is right for you Smile

Yeah I found everyone has a different opinion... But as I am just getting little bits I think if god forbid the worst happens I would like to think my time would come to be a mummy and I would have the bits that I got

Word of caution: you don't know how big your baby will be so don't buy too many tiny clothes or nappies... DD is already too long for newborn things at 3 weeks but I have friends who've had babies in tiny baby / newborn sizes for months...

Things that have been useful that you can buy now:

  • huge muslins (70x70) which I bought from amazon
  • folding change mat that fits a nappy and spare babygro in the pocket (great to chuck in bag for a quick trip when you don't need the massive nappy bag)
  • cotton wool pads (we're now switching to washable pads we go through so many) NOT cotton pleat it fluffs everywhere. Wipes are a bit of a rip off I think.
  • compost bin for the change table (we put little plastic bags in, nicer than a normal bin and keeps the smell in because the lid seals)
  • incontinence pads for the change table - easier than wiping it when there is an accident!
  • lansinoh if you plan to breastfeed, plus decent expanding maternity bras like bravado
  • small cellular blankets
  • baby fleece for tummy time

Other than the big things that's literally all we're using at the moment.

I would hold off buying anything as quite a few things we bought (quite late, after 30 weeks) we've been given second hand or had bought for us. I've stuck to buying things like storage (even then we've been given a wardrobe), sheets, plain blankets, plain large muslins, changing mats.

We've been given/lent so many clothes, two baby bouncers, baby gym, etc etc!

I really want to go buy toys for the baby but I can't justify it when I know it'll get some as presents.

The most sensible thing I have seen being done was by a friend expecting her first. She wrote a list of what she thought she would need, then asked all her friends and colleagues who were mums to go through the list and cross off or add to it and include quantities. There is so much kit you can buy for a baby, half of which you may never use!!!

Whereisshe that's a great list and good advice, thank you!
