You arrive at hospital having fasted from about 12hrs previously (are allowed water) they take a blood sample, give you an orange flavoured drink and then you wait 2ish hours (take a book as not allowed to leave) and then they take another blood sample and then you are free to go home and eat! I phoned in a few days later for my results, which were negative.

Oh thanks for the info that's great. Did you feel ok not eating for all that time? I'm worried about feeling faint or passing out? X

I was given lucuzade by the hospital and told to fast (except water) from midnight, drink the lucuzade (a small amount needs to be removed from the bottle) within 10 minutes and go to the hospital exactly 2 hrs later for them to take the blood. so drank at 8am and had bloods done at 10am.

Cathpip has pretty much explained it all! Check with your mw if they supply the glucose drink or you take your own.

Regarding whether I felt ok, I was fine, drove myself there (16 miles to the hospital) but I did take a bottle if water to keep hydrated during the test.

I went to midwives' at 8.
They took blood.
I drank godawful syrupy liquid.
After 1 hour they took blood.
After 2nd hour they took blood.
After 3rd hour they took blood.
Then I went home.

I nearly vommed on each test (I had to have 3 during my pregnancy) and had to lay down somewhere cold. If you puke, you have to do the test all over again another day.

Just another perspective, sorry it's not a positive one Hmm

I was fine, thought I would be terrible with no food as I seem to eat ALL THE TIME and had no issue with the drink.

The lady who stood with me while I drank it (I downed it in one) said quite a few people puke it back up if they drink it too fast, but the worst of it for me was I felt slightly hyper for a while about 10 minute after I had had the drink. And it was boring waiting 2 hours for the second blood test.

Join I too downed it and the nurse was impressed with me Blush weird Grin

I had mine a few weeks ago. I arrived at 9, had blood taken, drank 4/500ml of lucozade, went back in an hour and had more blood taken, waited another hour and had more blood taken and went home.

It was absolutely fine, just pretty boring! And my dad took me to the hospital and we went up to the canteen and dad had a full English whilst I sipped my water!

What is described above is the GTT which you have around 24-26 weeks. At about 10-11 weeks you may be asked to have a fasting test, which just involves not eating after dinner, going to the hospital the next morning and just having some blood taken. You're then free to go. So you might want to check if you're having both or just the GTT.

Mummytobe2014 · 17/01/2014 08:43

I left my lucozade out over night to go flat, drank the amount advised within 10 mins at 6am in morn and had my bloods at 8am, was 28 weeks and felt like shit for the 2 hours but wasnt sick thankfully, make sure you take something small to eat with you just incase you get a bit wobbly!
