Shaving!

Just wondered if anyone bothered shaving down below now they're pregnant? I always used to like keeping trimmed but now I'm not so bothered. My mum said sometimes they shave you when you go into labour???

As far as I'm aware they don't shave anymore!

I'm just planning to keep everything neat and tidy with trims.

Wax yes, shave no (doesn't it get itchy!?)
I'd recommend it as if you need stitches it helps if there's not a forest to wrestle through and also the bleeding after is pretty messy so I was pleased I was waxed for that bit.

All up to you though, your midwife won't even notice!

Shaving all labouring women was routine in the 1950s and not completely eliminated until 1980s.

It's not required for any medical reason (and indeed newly shaved/waxed skin is a hygiene hazard at time of delivery because of tiny abrasions). Bless you are having ELCS or want to be prepared for all eventualities, in which case you might want to shave away the top of your pubic hair over the site of incision/dressings.

I didn't shave but DH kept me trimmed (I couldn't see enough to go down there with scissors)

I ended up having an emcs and they didn't even shave me then. I think that was more because they were in such a rush (DS was coming whether they liked it or not)

greentshirt · 16/01/2014 15:08

I've carried on with waxing as usual and hope to continue!

In have been using my bikini trimmer during pregnancy but now at 40 weeks it is rather difficult! I just shave the top and trim the rest, just feels and looks less out of control Smile

MummyPig24 · 16/01/2014 15:23

They don't Shave you anymore. Tbh I can't see that area anymore and can barely reach it, just enough to wipe or wash, certainly not for shaving!

muppetthecow · 16/01/2014 15:23

I didn't bother with DS1 after a certain point as it was such a hassle with the bump, but did get DH to help me trim a bit just before DS2 was born. I couldn't face being 'overgrown' for the messy bit afterwards Smile

I used immac last time. Not vain in the slightest but I think it helped keep my stitches clean and infection free. I bled for 9 weeks after so was mighty pleased I had no hair getting in the way.

SaucyJack · 16/01/2014 18:34

I take the whole lot off every now and then- but nowhere near as frequently as pre-preg. Doesn't matter that you can't see when doing it all.

It's personal choice. Don't bother if you don't want to.

PenguinsDontEatKale · 16/01/2014 18:56

Totally personal choice.

They will not shave you when you are in labour. They may shave small areas if you need a section (to avoid hair over the incision) but not 'all off'.

Just do whatever you want. If you like it all off, or trimmed, or full and natural, just do that.

Personally mine will be fairly trimmed just for ease of keeping clean afterwards, but not until the end and I'm not an 'all off' type anyway.

cathpip · 16/01/2014 18:58

I have had an elcs and an emcs, with both they asked to check that the area around incision site was clear of hair, otherwise it was a dry shave with a bic from the midwife!

ladylashes · 16/01/2014 19:03

I normally trim (very occasional wax) but seeing as I can no longer see anything down there it's a bit 'out of sight, out of mind'. Might ask DP to have a go with the scissors this weekend. Will possibly treat myself to a high bikini wax closer to my due date :-)
