Bump measuring big but no sugar in urine. Is MW having a hairy about nothing?

Am 27+3, but measuring 30 weeks.
Bump is huge and I do look ready to burst.
But first baby was 9lbs at two weeks overdue.
Second was 7.5lbs at 39 weeks.

So if no sugar in urine, why is MW worried about gestational diabetes?

Did she say it was GD that she was worried about? Have you had the glucose tolerance test?

seatfor5 · 14/01/2014 20:29

Have you had a GTT, that will sort out if you have GD or not! i would have thought they will want you to have another scan to measure the baby, it could also be that you are carrying a lot of fluid.

nevergoogle · 14/01/2014 20:33

she said GD was a concern. but she had no other measurements to compare to so no idea if following my own trend on the chart. am to go back in 2 weeks and she may arrange a GTT.

She could be worried about polyhydramnios. That can be caused by GD.

nevergoogle · 14/01/2014 20:40

ok, i'm going to watch my sugar intake for a couple of weeks and see what happens at next appointment.

Probably the best idea. I measured big later on last time, no GTT offered, had a scan that showed high fluid index but nothing came of it! I panicked about cord prolapse but the fluid level went right down again and they seemed to forget about me measuring over. Mysterious. So this may come to nothing for you.

I did have a huge baby though! Nearly 10lb Shock

Emus · 14/01/2014 20:55

I measured 2-3 weeks ahead consistently throughout (wasn't offered any further scans or GTT test) and my midwife suggested several times that our baby would be around 8.5-9lb. He was born at 40+1 and weighed 6lb 10oz! I just had a lot of fluid. Grin

stopgap · 14/01/2014 21:05

I have had GD since week 28, but no sugar has ever been detected in my urine (only via bloods during the glucose tolerance test).

SinkyMalinks · 15/01/2014 07:27

I've measured 4-6cm big throughout. I think they now allow 4cm either way before they start thinking scans/bloods etc.

The most important thing seems to be your trend, like you said, they have no other measurements for you. I was brought back alternate weeks on 3 occasions to confirm the measurement. My midwife was really clear that fundal height is a crap tool, but it's all she has in clinic - so I got scanned.

The extra growth scan showed a normal, but 90th centile baby, normal fluid etc. my bloods are all fine (I didn't have a GTT)

Now, I get measured and charted, most recently 35cm at 30 weeks, but no one panics. I just make big bumps!

cathpip · 15/01/2014 08:16

I am on pregnancy no3, have measured very large with all 3, this one I am measuring 34 weeks at 28weeks :). I have been tested for gd and I definately don't have it. As my consultant said, "some women just carry big babies or just look very large" . My first weighed 9lb, my second weighed 10.9lb, I am hoping miracles will happen and that this baby will be 8lb something!

Ilovekittyelise · 15/01/2014 08:17

bump measuring is completely unscientific, especially when not even in the context of a series of measurements!

your midwife, in my opinion, is being an irresponsible busy-body; if she has concerns about growth, then you should be referred for a scan, and if your baby seems especially big, causes should be investigated; in that order.

AnAdventureInCakeAndWine · 15/01/2014 08:28

A one-off measurement that's 3 weeks ahead is nothing to be concerned about, and your MW shouldn't have worried you. If you're consistently measuring considerably ahead for several appointments then they are more likely to refer you for a growth scan.

I suspect having a previous 9lb baby has ticked one of the GD risk factor boxes, and IIRC they will refer you for a GTT if you tick two boxes. So if you consistently measure ahead then that might be another risk factor ticked and get you a GTT referral. But a single measurement is different.

isitme1 · 15/01/2014 08:39

I measured big last time they said I was around 3-4weeks ahead.
My 1st was 8.7lb
and 2nd was 8.13lb
I didn't have GD.

WeeTeaJenny · 15/01/2014 08:55

I measured big at later scans , they kept telling me I would have a big baby
Turned out to be extra amniotic fluid and when my waters went this time they really went !
Baby was 8lb
No gestational diabetes just extra fluid for me

Katnisscupcake · 15/01/2014 09:27

I measured big at my 20 week scan, in particular the tummy of the baby appeared big compared to the head/leg measurements, but not significantly enough for them to be worried. I was then diagnosed with GD at 28 weeks when I had the GTT (because my Mum got late onset Type 2 Diabetes in her 50s so we all had to be tested when PG).

I was not the 'usual' candidate as I was very slim (size 10 pre-pregnancy) and was very healthy. I have 3 sisters, all who are much bigger than me but none of them got GD with their babies. I was the unfortunate one.

What was even more unusual was that within 2 weeks of being diagnosed and being diet-managed, I was fully insulin dependent and was having to inject 5 times a day.

BUT and this is a big BUT, it was OK. If it does turn out that you have GD, yes there are risks but you will be very well looked after and monitored and it's for a relatively short time. I was terrified at the time I was diagnosed, but actually it was fine and if I look back now, it certainly wouldn't stop me having another one!!

I am measuring 3-4 weeks ahead, scans at 20 and 22weeks showed baby is very big. DS was 9lb 11oz on due date and I'm thinking this might be a 10lber. So agree with other posters, some people just have bigger bumps or bigger babies, you probably have nothing to worry about.

nevergoogle · 15/01/2014 18:39

I'm trying not to worry. I think I am eating way too much sugar. I've had HG and have had to take anti-emetics since 15 weeks. At that point I struggled to eat much at all, and was losing weight so got into the habit of eating high calorie and high sugar stuff when I was able to eat.
Now at 27 weeks, I still need the anti-emetics without which I just start throwing up again but they do make me fairly ravenous and I'm eating bad stuff.
I'm going to try to take a bit of control over that over the next couple of weeks and see where we are then.

I measured too big and was sent for consultant to check me etc etc. They weren't going to let me get too far past due date. In the end DS was born at 41 weeks exactly and weighed 6lbs 15. Don't worry!
O also ate my body weight in jam donuts those last few weeks!

nevergoogle · 15/01/2014 18:52

yy, to jam donuts.

I'm booked for ELCS at 39 weeks already for other reasons so not sure GD would change the outcome.

sugar does not cause diabetes, nor is diabetes all about sugar (im type 1: i know). insulin is at the end point of a long process of carbohydrate metabolism; the bit where the bread, rice, pasta, cake, sweets, whatever carbs you have ingested and been broken down into simple sugars, are taken up by cells to be converted into units of energy. insulin is the hormone that enables this. if you are not producing insulin or are so resistant to it that supply does not meet demand, you are going to have a problem with carbs in general; simple sugars are just one of them and unfortunately many peoples understanding of diabetes is incorrect in that they think its all about sugar (sugar causes it, diabetics have to avoid it etc etc. all rubbish).

nevergoogle · 15/01/2014 19:21

i was saying that i'm eating too much generally, including carbs and that this could be causing a big baby not that it could be causing diabetes.
