Magnesium supplements and ‘morning’ sickness - any one tried this?

Hi, I’m just into wk 9 of my first pregnancy and last week my morning sickness kicked in (I’m emetaphobic which is making the whole thing traumatic). My GP prescribed me Avomine which is helping a bit but I’ve been Googling ms and some people seem to suggest taking magnesium supplements helps....

Has anyone tried this? Has it worked??

I’m bumping this on the off-chance that someone has used magnesium supplements... (I won’t bump it again!)

I took synergistic magnesium and b6 which I have been taking for a long time before pregnancy. B6 is supposed to help with sickness but magnesium is new one for me. I take it to prevent restless legs and leg cramps. It is perfectly safe in pregnancy, and you lose a lot of yourown magnesium storages when the baby is building their skeleton, unless you have a really good diet, but it didn't make any difference for my sickness. Anti-sickness tablets and acupuncture bands made the only real difference.

iv also used for leg cramps but not heard it in relation to sickness. i heard that larger doses of b6 can help nausea. i found constant eating helped (for sickness, not so much the waistline!)

I heard it was zinc, I took zinc and vit B6 high dose with DC3 and wasn't sick the whole pregnancy although still felt nauseaus but was sick as a dog with DC1&2. I don't know if it was coincidence or it actually was the vits??

That's funny Foxeym, I have heard zinc supplements can trigger nausea and that's why some people fund them hard to take....

I only came across magnesium specifically for ms when I was googling to try and find out what might help me (first pregnancy, so everything is new to me). Here are a couple of blogs and a book that mention it -

A friend of a friend swears that her ms was ‘cured’ when she started taking magnesium supplements but I confess that I’m not 100% convinced... :-/

I am not convinced either, I am afraid. Mainly because I took LOADS of magnesium (and my diet is pretty good for it, too) in the year keading up to pregnancy while I was training hard, and while pregnant still took a massive 500mg a day so my magnesium stores and intake must have been pretty spot on but I still had heavy sickness. I love natural health, and magnesium really helped my muscles with running etc but it isn't the holy grail.

I believe morning sickness is a reaction to the hormones by the autonomous nervous system, and many things help but cure is not really possible.... I hatethe theory about it all being about perception, too. My first pregnancy was a complete surprise (I had beentold I wouldn't conceive without help, I was on contraception anyway and fell pregnant during a prleriod) and the thought of pregnancy seemed laughable. Nevertheless when I was five weeks as discovered afterwards I felt so hideously nauseous and sick but with no abdominal symptoms or flu symptoms I took the test as a laugh and it was positive. Paradoxically I felt less sick afterwards because I now understood what was going on.

Thanks for replying. That sounds far more sensible to me and I completely agree with you about ms being a reaction to the hormones produced during pregnancy. When I first came across people talking about magnesium as this miracle wonder supplement, I wanted to believe it - wouldn’t we all love a natural, easy remedy to completely get rid of all ms?!?! - but it just didn’t make sense to me.

I am still a big fan of magnesium though, it has made a difference for my restless legs. And I read somewhere it is used like an anti-depressant by the French, to keep emotions at even keel....

starrynight123 · 17/01/2014 12:03

I took the magnesium seriously enough that I made sure the vitamins I bought to take during pregnancy had it in them (pregnacare plus). Thing is, there are so many supplements and as a lay person, I honestly don’t know enough about them to know which one(s) are good for me in general, which ones are better to take during pregnancy etc. At times like this, I spend ages looking online and then go for a general multivitamin while eating healthily (lots of veg, some fruit, good homemade food) and hope for the best!! I am learning a lot about the health benefits of different foods and things though, so it’s a step in the right direction!

I'm not sure about magnesium for the sickness, but I heard its good for miscarriage prevention so I am taking it. It's also in my prenatal vitamins. If it's meant to help with nausea it isn't doing a very good job on me...
