Did we shop too early?

Expecting baby 16th July so very early to shop but me and DP said we'd be daft not to with the January sales being on. Bought a few essentials yesterday and saved £200, surely that's got to be worth it!! Some friends said I should have waited til after 20wk scan but I'm thinking positivity all the way so no harm in getting a few bits now. What does everyone think?

27 weeks here, and have bought nothing.

People starting to put pressure on to get organised but I can't help but think it'll only take a couple of hours to pick up some muslins, breastpads and sleepsuits/vests. I don't get the big deal. Am i missing something?

Loopylouu · 13/01/2014 10:58

I'm 29 weeks and have nothing yet, aside from baby grows and vests that my dad has got over excited and bought me.

In my case it's because my ds had problems at birth and almost didn't make it. We had everything for him, nursery furniture etc and if the worst had have happened, exh would have had to have gone home and got rid of the lot before I went home. The thought of all the stuff at home while we were going through hell at the hospital (I stayed in with him for the whole three weeks he was in scbu) was awful.

So this time round, there will be nothing. Only a Moses basket/blankets at a friend house which dh can pick up if all is ok, ditto car seat. Everything else I can order from my hospital bed or dh can go and pick up shortly after the birth if all is well.

Plus, with ds I got too much. He didn't need anything for the first few weeks. Didn't even use the pushchair for a few weeks after he can home so that could have easily waited until after he was born. There were too many clothes he didn't wear, furniture that wasn't nessacary and the a baby bath went to the tip unused when he was 6 months, we always used one of those huge baby bath sponges in the big bath.

The biggest wastes of money were the bottle warmer (he was happier with bottles from the fridge) and the nappy bin. Both at the charity shop within weeks!

nevergoogle, I think you might be my long lost twin (27 weeks, not a single purchase made and I am pretty sure that all the shops and supermarkets will still be open at the end of March/beginning of April).

livingzuid · 13/01/2014 11:09

When do you start shopping for stuff though? Aside from maternity stuff (I needed a bra at 8 weeks and was in full maternity stuff by 17 weeks). I am just coming up to 20 weeks now and still can't envisage shopping but equally like you don't want to miss out on sale bargains and having to shop when lugging a huge bump around.....

I guess it's a matter of personal choice, sounds like you were sensible :)

nevergoogle · 13/01/2014 14:03

there's a mothercare and sainsbury's within a stones throw of the hospital. I'm sure DH can pop in there while i'm still in hospital if things kick off earlier than planned.

with DS1, I had a shopping list, and everything was washed and dried in advance and cot all made up ready. a bird shit on the washing line and i had to wash everything again.

with DS2, the steriliser, bottle warmer, bottles etc never made it out of the loft ever.

now DS3, yeah, whatever. suppose i need to make space for a cot in our room. Confused.

Thanks again for all your thoughts ladies :)

I am going to shop a little more now as, like some of you, I just want to have faith that my little one will be ok. I love seeing all the little bits I've bought lying about and DP has already started decorating the baby's room. Some of my close friends have bought little outfits already which I'm so happy about. I see so much stuff on in this month's sale and there's no guarantee they'll be at a similar price closer to due date. DP has just said it's going to be the last thing I want to do when the bump gets bigger(he's got a DS who's 6 years now, defo knows the score)

Wondered though, I have one box of size 1 newborn nappies, there are 74 in the box. I realise I'll be changing baby loads everyday so as they're mega cheap at the moment I want to get a couple more boxes, but baby will be growing fast so when did most of you change to the next size? I know it's completely dependent on weight of baby when born but just wanted a rough idea

I'm almost 30 weeks and still haven't bought anything except the cot and wardrobe for the Nursery.

I very, very nearly bought a crib this morning but then freaked out that I was looking too far ahead and stopped myself. I just can't bring myself to do it yet.

Expectans · 13/01/2014 15:27

Mixi, I have been using about one of those nappy packs each week. They go up to about 5kg in weight I think, so unless you have a massive baby you will prob be using them for a month at least.

IrnBruTheNoo · 13/01/2014 17:58

With my first baby I bought around 37 weeks all the essentials. I didn't want to buy stuff early.

Homebirthquestion · 13/01/2014 18:07

I saved a fortune by shopping in the Jan sales.

We're still using the stuff now for dc3 and we wouldn't have got such good quality stuff if we'd paid full price.

ziggletttwiglett · 13/01/2014 19:00

This post makes me happy!

My mum bought things before i was even pregnant! and she's buying thing now even at only 12+5 weeks and i've picked out a few bits with her! Nothing big but still.
A few times i have thought oooh am i tempting fate?.. but at the end of the day i will try again if anything goes wrong with this PG and it's not like something will go wrong JUST because we bought a few baby gro's.

Whatever will be will be! Why miss an opportunity when it's there for the taking! :)

mixi82 · 13/01/2014 21:00

ziggle that's so true!! I'm keeping a positive mind and even today looking at things made me feel very motherlike already, and it didn't seem strange. I walked in and spotted some gorgeous clothes and went all mushy inside, something I don't usually do or at least haven't up until now. I'm saving the clothes shopping for both me and DP as it'll be fun I think (I even talk to baby whilst I'm looking at things....hope no one thinks I'm completely nuts!)

expectans thanks so much for posting that, means I kind of know my limit on that size. I may get 2 more boxes then and go from there :)

with my 1st I bought everything really early and overbought - especially in those last few weeks... I was so bored waiting I always ended up in town eating then shopping!!

with my 2nd I didn't buy early really and i got a lot less - but we were having to move house on my due date so couldnt really get things sorted properly!!

in regards to nappies I wouldnt buy anymore size 1 both my dd's only wore them for a few days maybe a week max and never really fitted into newborn clothes. also some babies can react to certain brands so would advise sticking to one pack of each brand - I couldnt use huggies at all or pampers wipes on my 2. just a tip aldi nappies ive found are the best and much cheaper than pampers and huggies Grin

Grotbagstwin · 13/01/2014 21:29

My ds was due mid July and I had bought everything by the end of January (saved a fortune in sales) I am glad we did as I ended up ill (not pg related) and was in no fit state to go pushchair and cot shopping.
My friend went on Mat leave and had only one bag of secondhand clothes a friend had given her, she had her baby 3 days later and was having contrractions in her local Kiddicare as she bought everything, everyone is different.

MinesAPintOfTea · 13/01/2014 21:45

Just don't buy lots of nappies. DS flew through the smaller sizes (2 weeks in newborn I think) and we ended up giving loads to the local foodbank. If you look at the weights on the boxes they overlap and I've never got near the upper limit on them before they start leaking

But the big items and a couple of packs of sleepsuits/vests, yes.

OwlinaTree · 13/01/2014 22:36

Just consider the season for the clothes. So if baby duein July make sure you are not buying lots of wintery clothes in size 1-3 months as the baby won't be able to wear them!!
