A (very) stupid question about the anti-D injection...

I've got my anti-D injection on Valentine's day. I've done all the research etc, know why I'm having it, know why it's important, and I'm usually fine with injections, needles of any kind (except for those IV cannulas they put in your hand, oh my goodness I hate those but that's a different story) - but one thing I couldn't find out is where do they inject you? Is it into your arm? How much does it hurt and does it leave your arm really stiff? (I do a really practical uni course and if it's like the flu jab, which left me unable to move my arm for two days, I should probably let them know!!)

Thank you Grin

In your bum :)

angelopal · 11/01/2014 20:32

Had first in arm and second in bum. They were a bit sore but was able to move normally after.

heylottie · 11/01/2014 20:33

I had mine in my thigh (don't know why!) It stung quite a bit, and made me wince and I am quite stoical. Apparently it can leave a bruise but I haven't looked, and didn't think about it since! So I think you will be fine (hope so!)

MoominIsGoingToBeAMumWaitWHAT · 11/01/2014 20:37

So it'll probably be thigh or bum and it'll probably be a bit sore... sounds like a morning off to me Wink

Had mine in my thigh and bum, I also felt the sting whilst it was being injected but no pain after it's done.

MissYamabuki · 11/01/2014 20:40

Arm here, surprisingly painful helpful but no soreness afterwards

ElBombero · 11/01/2014 20:47

Had my 3 in arm (car accident required a third) but no reason why you could request elsewhere ie bum or thigh.

ElBombero · 11/01/2014 20:48

Yes to surprisingly painful, with DD not painful at all apparently they have changed the supplier/compound and it's a stinger

StarsInTheNightSky · 11/01/2014 20:51

I had mine in the top of my arm/shoulder, although I had an earlier one due to complications in this and previous pregnancy (had it at 14 weeks) so not sure if that makes a difference?
I haven't had the next one yet though so I can't really compare, but it didn't hurt at all. It didn't hurt afterwards either, although I had a sizeable bruise (size of a big grapefruit). I usually react badly to injections too.

ImMarmite · 11/01/2014 20:52

Have it in bum/tigh it hurts less & it's painful- sorry- but it's like the putting soup in with a needle...it's very thick HmmConfused

AliBingo · 11/01/2014 20:53

Mine gave been thigh except one in bum. They sting and leave a small bruise but not that bad really.

sillymillyb · 11/01/2014 20:54

I had first in my bum then needed another 2 (had bleeds) one in each arm. I can't remember it stinging or being bad, so it can't have been that bad as I'm a wuss! Don't worry, honestly, lots of us have had it and whilst it's not pleasant it's not awful either. Promise!

HomeHypno · 11/01/2014 20:55

It should be given in the arm, and probably won't be quite as bad as the flu jab because you won't get a similar immune reaction from it. Probably never pleasant though.

Rosa · 11/01/2014 20:57

Had in bum, thigh never had in the arm .

EeyoreIsh · 11/01/2014 20:57

I had it in my arm. Hardly felt it, and no pain after.

IHaveSeenMyHat · 11/01/2014 20:59

Arm.

It was fine, no stiffness or aching or anything.

Having read MN I was expecting it in the arse cheek. The midwife said "noooo, that would be extra cruel!"

MoominIsGoingToBeAMumWaitWHAT · 11/01/2014 20:59

Thanks everyone :) so the injection itself is more painful than afterwards? I can deal with that. I had three days of side effects, pain and stiffness after the flu jab and felt run down for a week afterwards so anything with fewer side effects is great Grin

I've got midwife on Tuesday for 25 week check, might ask her then :)

Homehypo why should it be given in arm, surely an IM injection can be given in any large muscle? Arm, thigh, bum?

Strongecoffeeismydrug · 11/01/2014 21:14

Had mine in my arm Grin, midwife said it would sting as they've changed them recently but it didn't, and didn't ache after eitherWink

MoominIsGoingToBeAMumWaitWHAT · 11/01/2014 21:21

I've got plenty of cushioning on my bum since getting pregnant, think I prefer the sound of bum to arm Grin

I'm due my anti d injection in 3 weeks and panicking I hate needles so scared sounds painful

EeyoreIsh · 11/01/2014 21:27

Don't panic! It's really not that bad.

PinkandPoo · 11/01/2014 21:30

Arm

No after effects unlike the flu and whooping cough ones.

MoominIsGoingToBeAMumWaitWHAT · 11/01/2014 21:34

What's the whooping cough one like? And when do they recommend that one? Not been told about it.

Generally I'm fine with needles but I was a bit Hmm about why no-one said where it'd be injected, unlike ones like the flu jab and HPV vaccine I had a few years back where it was obvious it'd be into your arm... I guess it's because they inject it into any muscle they like Grin

The only needles I cannot stand are cannula ones like I said and the ones they give you in hospital that go straight next to your belly button.... bloody hell those hurt Shock

Any others are just gravy. I watched my flu jab being done Grin
