Tommy Tipee: yay or nay?

I wonder if Tommy Tipee as a brand is any good and if so any recommendations in particular?? (Expecting first baba so hubby and I haven't got a clue what half the stuff in the Boots Baby section is for lol). We have a Tommy Tippee factory not far from us and they have a factory shop where you can get great bargains apparently. Just not sure what we need though and if their stuff is good. I am planning to breastfeed / express milk. All recommendations welcome!!!

The manual breast pump is rubbish. I like the closer to nature bottles though and I have the microwave steriliser which is ok and easy to use.

Lj8893 · 11/01/2014 15:27

I use the tommee tippee anti colic bottles and they are really good, but i use formula. I tried the breast pump and it didn't work very well but that may have been because I didn't have a great milk supply (hence why I went on to formula)

I bought the tommee tippee insulated bottle holders and they were crap, the bottles were cold within an hour.

Cariad007 · 11/01/2014 15:40

Is their nappy disposal thing (Sangenic?) any good or should I just use nappy bags and a bin? I'm concerned about the house smelling of nappies as I can't be running out to the outside bin several times a day!

AyeWhySWIM · 11/01/2014 16:23

We really like having the nappy bin upstairs as it does totally contain the smell and it's difficult to keep getting out to where our outside bins are with a small baby. They're very much a 'marmite' item though - lots of people think they're a waste of money so you need to think about whether you'll use it and how you're planning to dispose of nappies somewhere like the bedroom/bathroom.

MummyPig24 · 11/01/2014 16:31

The manual breast pump was like an instrument of torture! Bottles fine though. And the first cup is brilliant.

NotSoNewNow · 11/01/2014 16:35

Microwave steriliser is great ime (have 2, 1 at grandmas). Also the closer to nature bottles and dummies (although ds isn't at all fussed by having one).

JuniperHeartwand · 11/01/2014 17:05

I used the manual breast pump, bought as a cheap emergency item it has been fine, but wouldn't use it often. Some things you don't need to buy in advance.

Charotte31 · 11/01/2014 17:18

I used mostly tt stuff. Microwave steriliser was great, bottles the best ones I uesd, and the nappy bin was good too.

K8eee · 11/01/2014 17:24

I read on here somewhere that something of the Tommie tippie brand exploded and burnt her Blush might be worth having a search for. We've gone for Phillips avent.

pinkbunny2012 · 11/01/2014 17:43

I bought all tommee tippee bottles with dd1, and thought they were good to begin with, my dd then started to suffer from colic really badly and I was told dr browns bottles were much better. So I bought two just to see and they were brilliant, her colic was nowhere near as bad, so now im pregnant again iv just bought dr browns bottles. I think the bottles were ok, but they took up a lot of there little face too, so I personally wouldn't recommended them x

Madratlady · 11/01/2014 17:55

The manual pump is probably ok for occasional use like Juniper said but it's not stood up to frequent use (several times a day).

Hubbythecatandme · 11/01/2014 18:13

oh dear, the breast pump sounds like a big no then!
Thanks for the advice :)
Can you breastfeed and occasionally use formula so the baby gets all his/her nutrients or is this not do-able?

Rockchick1984 · 11/01/2014 18:58

Baby will get all of their nutrients from your breast milk, there's no need to supplement with formula!

The electric breast pump is fab, as is the electric steriliser. We used the bottles once I moved on to formula feeding and never had a problem with them, will probably use them again this time if/when I stop breastfeeding.

WorriedMouse · 11/01/2014 20:20

Their bottles are fine - we used them with both dcs and the steriliser (electric and microwave) is fine too. We use the factory shop a lot. It's great for weaning too. Lots of cups, bowls, spoons, bibs etc and they also sell teething toys. If you don't live too far away it's worth having a look around and stocking up. The nappy bins are cheap but I find they don't hold many nappies so would rather bag them in sacks and use a normal bin.

AyeWhySWIM · 11/01/2014 21:21

Not sure what you meant by your question about formula? Breast milk has a greater range of nutrients so formula or anything else isn't needed but it should be totally possible to give occasional bottles of formula if that's what you wish.
DS1 had very occasional bottles of formula right from the start and was always fine with either. With DS2, however, we didn't try till much later and now he won't entertain anything other than the boob so maybe we should have done that again!

Climbingthewalls12 · 11/01/2014 21:25

I have the bottles and the electric steriliser and its FAB!

ShoppingismyNemesis · 11/01/2014 21:25

Please don't buy the sangenic, it's a million times cheaper to just collect the nappy bags at the end of the day and take them to the bin. Poo nappies are bagged and binned immediately in this house! I didn't like the bottles and bought Avent ones which are great. Tommee tippee cups and weaning equipment is great IMO. No need to go spending just yet though, the shops are open every day. Smile

TransatlanticCityGirl · 11/01/2014 21:36

I breast fed and had to stop using the Tommee Tippee bottles for expressed milk as DD was picking up some really bad habits that hurt me when she was on the breast. We discovered the Madela Calma teat and bottles which were amazing and from that point on we switched from breast to bottle seamlessly.
As for other items in their range, no real complaints but no real winners either.

Hubbythecatandme · 11/01/2014 21:57

worriedmouse yes we live a few miles away from the Cramlington factory shop, not sure when they are open though.

I thought perhaps if my diet is not the best ever (because of certain foods I don't like etc) then maybe formula would ensure the lo has all nutrients he or she needs?

Rockchick1984 · 11/01/2014 22:06

You don't need to give formula, breast milk will be far better for her, you can also take a multivitamin if you want to. Remember he/she has been fed solely by you for 9 months!

Separately though, no matter if you breast or bottle feed, its worth trying to improve your diet while she is small so she doesn't pick up bad habits or fussy eating from you once you're weaning (trust me, I'm hugely fussy!!) :)

Hubbythecatandme · 11/01/2014 22:06

Yes, you are right shopping not bought much yet (apart from gorgeous mamas and papas second hand cot on ebay and a lil hat for baba!). I am soo looking forward to meeting the baby that I can't help looking at baby things!
We have an unheated porch with nothing in it apart from our mail lol so I think the nappies can go in a bin in there before we take them outside.

Hubbythecatandme · 11/01/2014 22:13

thanks rockchick I am not hugely but seem to be eating sooo much healthier when I am in France (my parents grow their own fruit and veg think that's why). In the UK I think I need to need more varied veg for sure. My diet is not bad but not as great as it could be if I had maman cooking every day lol!

PenguinsDontEatKale · 11/01/2014 22:16

Your diet has minimal effect on the composition of breastmilk. Women in famine areas can successfully breastfeed.

Choose formula if it is right for you, but not because of your own diet. Smile

oadcb · 11/01/2014 23:15

I'd not buy anything for now. See how feeding goes. I'd get womanly art of breastfeeding for a good read (its not just breastfeeding stuff!)
