Pregnant and overweight

I am quite overweight....borderline obese. Started healthy diet/lifestyle (slimming world) and embarked on exercise regime about 2 months ago as we were thinking of starting to TTC.

Did test this week as period late and it's positive. Over the moon but I'm so worried about my weight, did not bank on catching so soon. I'm about 3 stones heavier than when I fell pg with dd.

I just wondered if anyone has actually lost weight during pregnancy? Or is it best to maintain?

Hi Firstly Congrates :) I am overweight too and am 17+3 with this baby I have lost 5lbs since becoming pregnant, with my last baby I was 1/2 lighter when I gave birth - Where I live in Surrey you are sent to see the dietitian if you have a raised BMI and they have recommended that I try and lose weight and have given we a healthy eating plan. If I were you I would speak to the lady at Slimming world and see if they have a plan for pregnant women I always use WW when I try and lose weight which always works for me (shame I always give up! ) and WW has a plan for pregnant ladies. Good luck x

Thank you seatfor5 Congrats to you too.
I was under the consultant for my BMI and age last time, so I'm fully expecting the same this time!
I will definitely speak to the slimming world lady, as I know they have a special plan if you're breast feeding so I assume the same applies for pregnancy.
Thanks again and best of luck with your pregnancy x

I'm in exactly the same boat. I'm 3-4 stone overweight Sad (gained 2st last year) and my news years resolution was to lose the weight to get in shape to help with ttc. I got my bfp on 2nd January and totally over the moon after a difficult miscarriage last year. But I am very worried about my weight. I am already carrying most of it round my middle how will a baby even fit in there?

It doesn't help that only thing helping my 24/7 nausea is to snack constantly.

I think I will mention my weight at my first midwifw appt and see what she recommends.

peeapod · 09/01/2014 22:36

stick with slimming world. they are approved by the midwifery council and can help you through pregnancy in conjuction with your midwife. so you can lose weight but safely. i lost 5 stone with them then became pregnant but still go and still follow the plan, with more healthy extras.... best thing to do is discuss this with your consultant, they are good at being discreet..

I'm 14 years older and 3 stone heavier this time around. I've had a FAR nicer pg this time. Until I got the lurgy this week I've been feeling great. 31 weeks long may it last. Smile
You don't have to be worse off because you are heavier.

Congratulations blackeyed! I am overweight and under consultant care for bmo. I've lost about 12 lbs since I found out I was pg just from healthy eating and ms. Stick to slimming world, I am as its just healthy eating really x

ThisIsMeNow · 10/01/2014 07:56

I'm so glad I found this thread! Have been thinking the same thing since getting my Bfp last week.
So is it safe to slowly and gradually lose weight if you're overweight already?

Banana79 · 10/01/2014 08:38

Hi ladies
..me too. I lost 6 lbs in the first trimester (no sickness just lack if wine I think Wink) Now 18 +2 I am still 4lbs lighter than before I was pg and still eating pretty much what I fancy. I have bmi of 30 and am 3 stone overweight. I've read that curvier ladies can expect to put on less weight than slimmer ones so maybe we shouldn't worry and just enjoy it Grin hopefully it's not in the post waiting to wop on in the 3rd trimester!

peeapod · 10/01/2014 08:42

i think general advice is its risky to try it on your own. you need support from midwives or somewhere like slimming world because there are more things you need to consider than a 'normal' diet.

Congrats OP and pregnant posters!

Just wanted to say I got really worried about gestational diabetes, being too big during delivery, ultrasounds etc when I was pregnant and it was all fine. I had a BMI around 34, weighed 3-4 stonr more than I wanted to but the pregnancy was fine. I ate low GI for the first trimester but after that ate what I felt I needed. I gained about 18lbs.

So as others have said don't assume the worst and worry yourself like I did.

thecakeisalie · 10/01/2014 09:31

I'm currently 28 weeks preg with DC3. I've got a raised bmi and in the obese category. I have been for all 3 of my pregnancies I've also been under consultant led care for all of them but had straight forward pregnancies and labours so being overweight doesn't mean were doomed to horrendous pregnancy complications! I'm actually planning a home birth this time which may mean I go against the consultant advice completely - luckily the community midwives are really supportive.

I think it's fine to lose some weight or not gain any weight during the pregnancy if you have a bit to lose as long as you do it in a healthy way. As others have said slimming world is one of the few clubs that allow you to continue while pregnant.

This time I've had quite bad morning sickness and was throwing up most days for weeks. It did mean I lost 2 stone from 7wks-16wks. I've since managed to maintain my weight and not gain anything. The midwives weren't at all concerned about the amount of weight I was losing and are pleased that I'm maintaining my weight.

Good luck with it all!

BlackeyedPetitsPois · 10/01/2014 11:07

Thank you everyone! And congratulations to you pregnant posters too.

I feel so much better having realised I'm not alone and there is hope for me to possibly lose a few pounds while still having a healthy pregnancy Smile

Sounds like slimming world is the best one out of all the slimming 'clubs'. I've just actually found a section on their website specifically for pregnancy.

Got my booking in appt with midwife on 20th so I'll have a chat with her then.

Thanks again x

Hiya, my BMI was 28.5 when I got pregnant. To be honest the midwives weren't bothered at all! I didn't lose any weight in the beginning because I wasn't sick at all, but I've been careful to not gain loads either. I've gained about 5 lbs and I'm nearly 20 weeks. If you're overweight but not quite obese they won't worry but might advise that you gain only 15-20 lbs during the pregnancy.
