Weird visual disturbances?

I've had this a couple of times recently and was just wondering if anyone else has had it or knows what it is?

It's a bit like when you look at a light and then get a blob in your vision? The blob is sort of like jaggedy shapes(?) and I can't see properly! I'm 29 weeks and had BP checked today which is all fine. Google reckons visual migraine but I have no headache or any pain or other symptoms apart from these weird shapes, which I can also still see when I close my eyes. What the heck is going on? It's doing my head in now, can hardly see to type! Anyone else experienced this?

I've had this in the past couple of weeks! Very scary at times Hmm I put it down to being really tired or hungry/thirsty. But I have no idea why tbh

I had big yellow spots in my vision this evening - I was looking at a white shirt wandering if it was just horrible, or whether it was my eyes!

Watching with interest!

Why not ring the midwife unit and ask their advice?

VJONES1985 · 09/01/2014 21:35

I'm diabetic and usually get that when my sugar levels are low. See if it helps to eat/drink something sugary.

I had a few episodes of something similar in both pregnancies and was told it was likely to be a temporary drop in blood pressure and that it was best to just have a sit down and wait it out.

I used to get migraines (no headache though) this was always the beginning of them. I totally understand your description of the visual.

I (after a long time and a trip to a specialist) narrowed my migraines down to dehydration/stress/over doing it in the gym. I also felt they could be linked to hormones and were worse in my teens.

If I get this visual now I take it easy and rehydrate.

Worth a trip to the doc but does sound like migraine.

Can pregnancy cause changes to the eye's vitreous humour (jelly, basically)? Might be worth asking your midwife...

I've always had 'floaters' (technical term, really!) in my eyes, being short-sighted: it's little bits of patches in the jelly in your eye, which you can see but are not dangerous. If you look at the floor, then look up quickly, you would see one... but it should float out of the way if you fix your gaze somewhere in front of you. Can be annoying enough to get in the way when reading/typing, or at least in my case!

May not be this at all, but I just wondered since it sounded familiar to me. If it's something else, I'm sure it'll be another joyous side-effect of pregnancy! Grin Hope you find out soon.

Ps type 'floaters in eyes' into Google and click the Wikipedia article if you want to see a picture example of what I mean xxx.

id be phoning mw as soon as can be a sign of pre clampsia also. get it checked to be on the safe side ladies

Janem001 · 10/01/2014 03:59

Yeah I agree it might be best to get it checked out. I had exactly the same thing in my first pregnancy and ended up with pre-e and a months stay in hospital.

confuddledDOTcom · 10/01/2014 04:14

If you're getting a lightning show, it's an aura. You can get them without the migraine and they can increase during pregnancy - or any hormone changes. It's probably not preeclampsia if it's on it's own, but I would get mention it to your GP or MW even if just for reassurance.

Iheartcrunchiebars · 10/01/2014 04:18

I had this twice in pregnancy. Told mine were migranes. (But I had no headache) or low blood pressure. Keep getting it checked out.

DreamToSleep · 10/01/2014 04:37

keep getting it checked, I have had pre eclampsia and I used to get sparkly floaters a bit like glitter. Everybody is different though, some people get flashing lights etc. My disturbances were accompanied by high bp, protein etc which are the other classic signs.

Just keep updating your midwife and they will check it out for you.

RaRa1988 · 10/01/2014 11:13

I've heard that you can get 'visual migraines', which are just like you've described - funny spots/floaters/silver fish in vision, but no headache. Sounds like that.

tilbatilba · 10/01/2014 11:16

Does sound like a visual migraine which there is no treatment for. However I would certainly get a doctors opinion.

Reincarnatedpig · 10/01/2014 11:23

I have these (not pregnant) - optical migraine. I would let you midwife know and have your blood pressure checked (theory they may be related to heart or vascular issues). I found mine were provoked by unusual foods or alcohol. They seem to be harmless in my case.
