Hi all

just wondered if anyone has first hand experience and could either highly recommend Frimley or Basingstoke and would choose one maternity ward over the other

I have to decide which of these would be the best place to give birth so any feedback on the two maternity wards would be hugely appreciated

Am moving from USA soon due to DH job and I don't have a clue about either of these two hospitals so any feedback would be great

Many thanks in advance

Haven't used the maternity in either but did end up in Frimley A&E a few years ago followed by a stay on orthopedic ward, and then a repeat visit to ortho a year later and they were brilliant, hospital in general was excellent!

thanks for that Noodles - Im hoping I can get to visit the maternity ward before I have to make my choice but its always great to hear from people who've experienced it first hand

Many thanks for your feedback

Frimley Park is an excellent hospital.

It's going to be a rare Mumsnetter who has given birth in both, but I'm sure you realise that!

Where are you going to be living?

Mintyy · 09/01/2014 20:02

One of the Queen's grandchildren was born in Frimley Park Wink ... not sure Basingstoke can claim the same!

ilovemydoggy · 09/01/2014 20:04

Frimley park hospital is brilliant only ever been a&e but def one of the best hospitals around.

Foxsticks · 09/01/2014 20:05

I gave birth to my dd at Frimley and they were brilliant. I spent 10 days there afterwards and couldn't fault the care we had at all.

CuppaSarah · 09/01/2014 20:08

Frimley park is fab! I gave birth there last February and it was a brilliant experience. Staff were so lovely and made me feel in control the whole time. The food was brilliant too. From antenatal to postnatal it was a fantastic experience.

Foxsticks · 09/01/2014 20:10

The food was bleurgh when I was there two years ago - maybe there has been a change of chef!

jaykay987 · 09/01/2014 20:20

I'm booked into frimley. I don't have any experience of the maternity yet though. I recently used their a&e and was submitted to ward. The food was awful, but they are ranked as one of the top hospitals in the country (hence why I picked it over guildford which was my other option).

They don't do maternity ward visits. Instead they have a video online. (Not sure if Basingstoke are the same).

I wouldn't have said those two hospitals are particularly close to each other. Do you know where you'll be living and therefore which will be closer to you?

IamInvisible · 09/01/2014 20:26

I've been treated in Basingstoke and Frimley Park, not maternity, though. I would choose Frimley Park over Basingstoke everytime.

Both of my children were treated at Basingstoke when they were younger, it was fine. But that's all.

HectorVector · 09/01/2014 20:31

Frimley... No question. Excellent maternity care.

MinnesotaNice · 09/01/2014 21:31

Watching thread with interest. I'm also American and currently DH & I are debating whether to try for DC3 while in the UK. I think Frimley Park and Basingstoke would also be the two closest for me.

CajaDeLaMemoria · 09/01/2014 21:37

I've had three operations at Frimley. None were maternity related, so I'm not sure if this will help, but the hospital staff were lovely, it was efficient and they looked after me well. They were some of the best operations I've had in terms of care and after care.

MrsJK · 09/01/2014 22:06

Had first DC at FPH and can honestly say top notch service could not fault them. Second DC in matter of weeks and hoping for the same level of service Wink

The maternity wing is currently under going renovation with full facilities open Spring 2014 I believe ( currently 1 refurb room open) They are also making the addition of a MLU which sounds great.

Cannot comment on Basingstoke but where will you be based? Good luck Smile

MediumOrchid · 09/01/2014 22:16

I had dd at Frimley Park, it was excellent, no complaints, it has a very good reputation.

nouvellevag · 09/01/2014 22:43

DD was born at Frimley Park, and tbh I'm gutted to have moved away so any future DC can't also be born there... Was induced, and antenatal and delivery were both totally fab.

Southsearocks · 09/01/2014 22:48

I was born at Frimley Park Hospital and I turned out alright Smile

isitnearlyteatime · 09/01/2014 23:27

Wow thank you all so much for your replies - that's so very helpful
Not having seen either of the two hospitals its just super to have first hand experience from those who've been and who can comment on how the hospitals are and will really help make my decision

Many thanks for letting me know FP are undergoing renovation MrsJk - Just wondered what an MLU was?

Im due to be moving somewhere close to Hook so not sure in terms of distance how far the two are but of the two Im veering definitely towards Frimley Park if the distance is not too far

Thank you again for all your feedback which is so useful

I'm due in around 4 weeks and will be using frimley, they have been good with the care so far. Shame we can't have visits though.

jaykay987 · 10/01/2014 05:45

Is it - hook is about 15minutes, so definitely doable.

MLU = midwife led unit

HellsGranny · 10/01/2014 06:23

I was born in Basingstoke Hospital! Admittedly it was nearly 40 years ago so likely to have changed a lot since then, but it surprised me seeing the name pop up!

MrsSnuffleupagus · 10/01/2014 06:29

I have given birth in both Frimley Park and Basingstoke Smile My DS1 was born at Frimley, my Dd at home and Ds2 at Basingstoke, the first two were not without complications and honestly my care has been excellent at both hospitals. Ds1 was a straight forward birth with complications after, a retained placenta, for which I had to go to theatre. Maternity, anaesthetics and theatre were all excellent. Dd was a brilliant (and quick!) homebirth. After Dd was born again I retained my placenta and had a pph and had to be taken via ambulance to Basingstoke. The midwifes that came out to me we're lovely (although they cut coming out a little fine) and again theatres and anaesthetics were brilliant. Ds2 was a straightforward birth with no complications after and I was home within 6 hours Smile admittedly I never made it to postnatal that time but the labour ward was fine and the staff brilliant. Good luck Smile
