I'm due anytime and just wondered how some of u mums dealt with your family pet when bringing home your baby for the first time.
We don't have a big dog, just a little terroir but I just want to do things right as he has been our baby for the past six years. Any tips and advice would be very welcome xx

Ah I had visions of you alpha rolling a terrier for a while then cravingcake Shock A Lab might if you are lucky reluctantly allow this, I've never met a terrier yet who would take harsh punishments laying down. This is why I abhor Ceasar Milan so much, if you do not know what you are doing and are not as confident as him there is a very high chance you will end being bitten by following his method, especially of you have any kind of working terrier.

Thankyou for all your replies, it is a jrt we have bad he is so adorable, he must be the laziest hack russell around as he just lives to chill out most if the day.

We have tried to get him prepared as much as possible, when something has been bought for the baby, we let him sniff it and tell him it's for the baby and will definitely not shut him away but include him in everything ( obviously never leaving him alone) it's been good to read up lots of tips about this, when the time comes I just hope he is ok but gut feeling tells me he will be xx

I realise now that is was a bad move getting a pup, but its too late as my kids love him now.

I am strict with him, he isn't allowed on the couch, and as soon as he put a foot wrong eg. Sniffs at the kids food, licks the toddlers face, tries to jump up etc, he gets a tap on the thigh and straight into bed. (He gets praised/treated for all positives too)

One of the problems is my partner doesn't equally discaplin, which is very frustrating, and makes it harder.

Also potty training is harder than expected, as he's still pooing and weeing everywer, he does go outside often but he refuses to do anything wen its too cold or raining. And as I'm feathering my nest, I can smell wee everywer and the thought of bringing baby into a smelly house is getting me down.

My 2 year old constantly annoys the pup, chases him everywer and went leave him alone, sometimes hurts him too, could this make the pup nasty or would it do the opposite and make him good with babies/kids. I'm quite confident that he's going to be a guard dog to the bby rather than a threat but would never ever risk leaving them alone.

Every one keeps telling me I'm just panicking because I'm heavily pregnant and hormonal, and things seem worse than they are at the mo.. I sure hope they r right x

The way I see it, introducing discaplin strieght away when the pup is very young ( I have had the pup since he was 6 weeks) will be fine, no matter what the breed
My pup does not regect punishment, can be disobedient tho, but isn't that normal for any pup?
And he would definatly not snap or even bark wen told of.

Could his temperament change as he gets older?

I have no experience wotsoever with jr's :/ I am just going with the flow at min

Hi mumov4xx - With the wee smell a great cleaner for this is clear vinegar, wash all floors with this and it will get rid of the smell and its the smell which attracts dogs to go back and pee on that area! Initially it will of course smell of vinegar but that dissapears very quick. Do not use bleach as this makes it worse! Hopefully with positive encouragement and getting rid of the smell he will get better at going out.
I have no experience with JR's either but just wanted to give advice on the smell as i know how horrible it can be!

mumov4xx · 10/01/2014 14:43

Thanks, I will try that, maybe will try mix it with something that smells nicer tho lol, iv been mopping my carpets once a week with detol disinfectant, it smells and feels really clean for few days but comes bk worse :/ x

Mummytobe2014 · 10/01/2014 15:31

Yeh dettol wont touch it either, from what i understand clear vinegar is safe on carpets too so def worth a shot and the smell does dissapear very quick so maybe dont mix with anything other than water initially. I have hard floors and used neat when we first had diesel after using everything on the market lol i got a bit obsessed as the smell was just lingering and i went a bit mad with neat vinegar and never had a problem since.

The acid in the vinegar breaks down the amonia(not sure on spelling) in dog wee which is why its so affective, most things like bleach also have amonia so they just make it worse. Once you have got rid of the smell you should be able to use dettol etc and your carpet will smell wee free Smile

mumov4 if your 2 year old annoys and hurts your dog it is quite likely that it will spoil its temperament. the dog could easily end up snapping if its hurt or feels thereatened.

You really need to give the dog a space that it can go to be on its own. It would be useful to teach your child how to treat the dog too.

mumov4xx · 10/01/2014 22:10

Easier said than done lol, he is getting ther, but he's finding it hard to accept the dog into the family as he's used to all the attention

Only found out this week I'm pregnant (first time mummy), but wanting to prepare my gorgeous Labrador well in time for the arrival. She comes everywhere with us so she's a big part of our life. Really interesting reading everyone's advice.
