Hi ladies
Title says it really. My previous pregnancy ended in miscarriage. I'm 5+4 now and really anxious. I really think if find it useful if id be able to have a viability scan. Have any of you ladies who have had previous miscarriages had any luck in getting a NHS viability scan in the next pregnancy? I'm dorset area if any other ladies are x

I'm sorry about your loss. I had a missed miscarriage at around 6 weeks last May. I asked for an early scan this pregnancy and was told that they wouldn't unless they had reason to think there may be something wrong ie pain or bleeding. They may do more routinely if you have had multiple consecutive miscarriages (3 or more possibly).

I am in a different area to you though so your nhs trust may be different.

So it has been a long long wait but I am having my scan on Monday and will be 11+2. Fingers and toes crossed!

You can pay for a private early scan but I'm not sure how much as I decided not to go down that route.

Good luck for the future x

CatsCantFlyFast · 08/01/2014 20:48

I have no experience of this but I think you will only get consultant care/early scan on the NHS after 3 miscarriages.
Many people pay for a private scan (between £50 - 100 depending on area). I would wait a few weeks if you can to be sure that there will be a heartbeat... A scan around 6 weeks may not yet see one. Good luck

PenguinsDontEatKale · 08/01/2014 20:50

After one miscarriage, no, not in my area. You'd get one if you had a history of recurrent miscarriage, but since (very sadly) so many pregnancies end in miscarriage, there isn't actually any medical reason to think you are at risk of a repeat.

Could you think about affording a private scan? I've been there and I do understand how stressful it can be.

Emberlina76 · 08/01/2014 20:50

I've had. MMC, MC and ectopic and they early scanned me this time as I had the ectopic but I fought to get one with my DS (who was my third preg) and paid for a private one at 6 weeks in the end. This time round I think I'm the most scanned woman in Britain! I'd look into a private one if I were you x

cookielove · 08/01/2014 20:52

I was told that i could have an early scan if i another pregnancy. I was given a number to call. I'm in Herts.

MrsGiraffe12 · 08/01/2014 20:58

Maybe a visit to my gp is in order, plus lots of tears. Might get me somewhere. The fact it was a MMC followed by ERPC and infection may help :-S

Hi!
Really sorry to hear about your loss.

I had a mmc at 16 weeks earlier this year and am now 15+3. I wasn't offered an early scan, and didn't ask, but have been offered a 16 week scan next week for reassurance and to check all is ok.
I can also go in at any time to listen to the heartbeat if I am worried. I haven't done this yet as I am trying to stop myself getting too paranoid. I think that once I go I wont be able to stop. They want e to go in once a week 16-20 weeks to hear it though which I will do.

I know what you mean about feeling anxious. I have times where I just burst into tears as I am so scared. Terrified about my 16 wk check up next week too as it was at that checkup last time that the midwife couldn't find a heartbeat and then I found out I had mmc.

Good luck xxx

StupidMistakes · 08/01/2014 21:38

I also miscarried, I suffered two missed miscarriages, the first one, I found out at my scan I should have been 14 wks 1 day but the baby had stopped growing at 8-9 weeks, I was gutted, and with my second due to an accident had a scan, which at first scan couldn't detect a heartbeat so went back ten days later and there was a good strong heart beat, my baby was 6weeks and 6 days, however two weeks to the day later my babys heart stopped beating.

My midwife with my DS was very whats to be will be about it, like she said, the scans before to check the baby had only increased my hopes, the 80percent chance of a successful pregnancy when you have a viability scan and there is a strong heart beat had meant nothing, I was in the other statistics. I know how stressful it is. The night before my 12 weeks scan with my now adopted DS I couldn't sleep for worry that this baby had also died and I had yet again been carrying, rubbing, singing, talking to a baby that had no heart beat and was now with the angels.

I am sorry that these weeks are going to be stressful

Tomkat79 · 08/01/2014 21:51

Hi Giraffe :-)

Lots of tears and a sympathetic GP should help. Mine had a tough skin and refused so went private in the end. Best £100 spent and offered much relief at 8 weeks.

A mw friend suggested I lie and say to EPU that I had pain/bleeding etc but there was no way I was doing that!

Good luck. So exciting! X

justhayley · 08/01/2014 21:55

Hiya sorry about your loss and congratulations on this one. I had a MC in September and got pregnant the following month. I was petrified but couldn't get an early scan, was told I'd have to have 3 MC before early scan was needed as there was no higher risk of repeat MC. I couldn't stand it & went private worth every penny. had my 12 week scan today felt like a long time coming.

Waggamamma · 08/01/2014 21:57

I know how you feel. I am currently 5 weeks pregnant after having a mc in June. I won't be offered an early scan on nhs without bleeding or other cause for concern.

I have booked a private scan for 8 weeks (this is the earliest they will do it) which is £39. I'm so scared and excited in equal measure.

bakingtins · 08/01/2014 22:09

Not in my experience. I had to have 4MC before I got the royal treatment. EPU will only see you if you have pain or bleeding ( though I've also been told by NHS staff to lie about it) and the miscarriage clinic won't see you until you've had 3-in-a-row. No harm in asking, though, and if they say no I'd book a private scan. 8 weeks is a good time to have one, halves the wait until your 12 week scan and if there's a good heartbeat and you measure right for dates at 8 weeks MC risk drops to 3%. It's about £80 in my area.

RadgeWeeMidden · 08/01/2014 22:24

I'm in Edinburgh and I got an early reassurance scan with the nhs at 8 weeks. I'd had one missed miscarriage previously

AHardDaysWrite · 08/01/2014 22:27

I wasn't entitled to one on the NHS after my mmc, but in my next pregnancy I booked a private one for 9 weeks. It cost about £100 and I found it hugely reassuring - nothing takes away the fear completely once you've been through mc, but I found it helpful not to have to wait until 12 weeks with the NHS.

Kirrin · 08/01/2014 22:32

I had an NHS scan at 8 weeks following a mmc but I think I just had a very lovely midwife :)
I would try the tears at the doctors route, and failing that get a private one if you think it will help you relax.

MightilyOats · 09/01/2014 10:07

My NHS trust made me wait until 13+5 (actually turned out to be 14+0!), after having mc at 6 weeks, so unless you go privately, probably not I'm afraid. Was a huuuuuge relief when I finally saw baby's heartbeat on the screen.

Pawprint · 09/01/2014 10:10

Sorry for your loss and congrats on new pg.

Sadly, the NHS normally only offers early scans if you've had more than three miscarriages.

kilmuir · 09/01/2014 10:14

Not much can be seen at 6 weeks. I had 9 miscarriages and was offered weekly scans. To be honest it only reassured me at that moment in time. My consultant was excellent and always said having a reassurance scan is no guarantee, that all will be well once you leave the room.
Its very worrying in the first few weeks

Rockchick1984 · 09/01/2014 10:24

My trust must be the exception - I got 2 early scans on NHS following MMC and that's apparently standard where I am (not Dorset sadly). As Kilmuir said though it only reassured me for a few minutes, I was convinced things would have gone wrong again before my next scan. I'm now 32 weeks and all seems perfect, so fingers crossed!

Angelina77 · 09/01/2014 11:07

No early scan offered to be after 2 MC (N Yorks). As others have said, after 3 they will or if there is bleeding or pain.

I paid for a private scan at 7 weeks and it was money well spent.

Jemma2907 · 09/01/2014 18:51

Congrats on your pregnancy!

I had a miscarriage in Sept last year and found out New a years day I was expecting again. Spoke to the EPU and they have said they will do a reassurance scan at 8 weeks for me though I just couldn't wait and paid to have one done privately last night. It was so lovely. Turns out I'm only 5w 5d (as of yesterday) which was 4 days earlier than I'd thought. Despite that, they were able to see a tiny tiny baby (2mm) and could see a flickering heartbeat! I got given pics and even a DVD. I know things could still go wrong this early on but just so happy that I saw the heartbeat. Has made it feel so much more real to me!

sophs37 · 10/01/2014 07:32

Hi I had a missed miscarriage in April last yr now I'm 35 weeks pregnant. Again! When I found out I was pregnant this time I called the epu n explained my situation and because of my previous miscarriage they have me a scan at 6 weeks! It really helped having that scan.
Gd luck n let us know xx

Sorry for your loss and that you're so worried now. Completely understandable. Fortunately I haven't experimented a mc but many of my friends have including mmc which has really panicked me as makes statistics all the more real. I've therefore booked a private scan for tomorrow when I'll be 8 + 2. Hoping it gives me some peace of mind. We shall see. Good luck and if they won't give you one maybe go down private route I'm in devon and mine is £100

I have known people who have had early scans on the NHS who haven't had 3 miscarriages in my area. But from what I can gather it depends on the midwife you book in with or on your GP, as its not 'normal' policy but they do consider case by case.
