I'm posting on behalf of a friend - really

She has a DS of 10 weeks, and was asked at her postnatal check if she'd had a period yet. She hasn't. The nurse asked if there was any chance she could be pg, as she should have had a period by now. I'm not sure that's right, but I bf DS1, so I don't know much about what happens if you don't bf. Anyway, apparently she 'could' be pg, so she did a pg test. A faint line has come up. Could this be because she has only recently had a baby, or would this not affect the result? I've said she should ask her GP for a blood test. Are they likely to do one?

Yes she should get a blood test - this should give you an HCG beta count which should identify how far along she is. Unlikely to be from her pregnancy to be honest - I had a scare after having my ds, at 7 wks old I got loads of preg symptoms so did a test and it was negative - docoto said hcg falls very rapidly certainly within 3 weeks it would be all but gone.
AS you do ovulate before you get a period, it is possible to get pregnant without getting your period back
My friend fell within 6 wks of having her dd, and she was bf 11 x a day and night.

unlikely to eb from her pregnancy with her ds I meant [doh]

Sounds like she is pg to me, it has happened to 2 people I know.

notasheep · 25/07/2006 21:50

She could very well be pregnant if she is bottle feeding and having unprotected sex (can even happen to breastfeeders but less likely at 10 weeks if exclusive feeing). Have seen it happen regularly.

when i saw a consultant at the family planning clinic, she told me she sees this happen fairly frequently as well.

Mercy · 25/07/2006 22:02

My second cousins were born just under 11 months apart, so yes it can happen

but [ouch no thanks] was my first response

depends on the birth oops
I was back into things fairly promptly, as had been off it entirely when pregnant!

Gingeme · 26/07/2006 11:39

Thats exactly what I was thinking oops. I had my ds2 due to breast feeding and using no contraception but that was 5 months after ds1.

katierocket · 26/07/2006 11:53

mears - crikey

emzickle · 26/07/2006 15:17

I would like to have another baby close to this one (obviously I haven't given birth to the first one yet, so I'll get back to you afterwards hehe)

cece · 26/07/2006 17:06

I am just shocked they are having sex so soon after having a baby!

shhhh · 27/07/2006 12:17

any news on the outcome..?? I'm curious.... ..

Laura032004 · 27/07/2006 13:10

She's seeing her GP this afternoon, and will ask for a test of some description then. Think she's still hoping that the faint line is an error.
