Sorry if this is on the wrong thread.
They have pulled the funding on our local antenatal classes and ive wanted to set up on my own for years ( am a midwife ) to allow me more freedom of content and its great seeing true and lifelong the friendships form.
There is a real need for affordable evening classes locally and while I want them to be affordable it is also a small business venture and I just cant decide what to charge .
Im going to do a 5 week evening course 7-8.30 with the 5th being postnatal with babies.
Ill be paying other professionals to come in to suit need ( eg physio ) .
So how much do I charge for the 5 weeks per couple / single ?
Would really appreciate any comments but not on the pros and cons of private classes just what is a reasonable price ?
Thanks everyone .
Sorry haven't checked grammer need to collect dc x

Have you thought about training in Hypnobirthing? I didn't do the NHS antenatal classes as the content was covered in my Hypnobirthing course, which was taught by a midwife.

We paid £160 for 5 sessions run by local midwife team. Other option round here was 7 or 8 sessions and that was £280 I think.

oooh- so hard to know where to pitch it- 100 quid for the 5 classes?? does that sound about right? i'd be happy to pay that personally. I live in dublin and they all seem to be around 130-150 eur, generally run on a weekend, 2 x half days. Hard to compare different geographical areas mind! Plus our NHS version is not as good- so there are a lot more private courses run as a result, so they may be cheaper than they are in UK for that reason... i dont know.. good luck to you though, the one i'm doing is with my hospital's midwife actuallly! She does it in her own home one weekend a month.

It's too long ago for me to remember.

But I think you need to find out as a starting point what you local NCT is doing (cost and style of course) as that's the 'brand' that people prepared to pay have heard of.

We paid £60 for three 2.5 hour sessions run by two midwives, however I would have been happy to pay a little more than that as they were really good.

emblosion · 07/01/2014 15:23

No more than £100 I think. Tbh its not something I'd bother with now (having had 2 babies) but would have first time round.

gemmaj66 · 07/01/2014 15:30

We paid £156 for 7 NCT classes plus 1 post-natal session. They were each two hours long although our teacher was available afterwards for questions and quite a few of the sessions ran on.

Around £100 for 5 sessions seems reasonable to me. Smile

I'm paying £168 for 11 hour refresher NCT course

I do some tutoring of both individuals and groups in a completely unrelated area but when pricing courses I find it easier to approach things from a different perspective- essentially, how much do you want to come away with from each class?
When pricing, take into account:

  • class size (do you want to go for small groups i.e. around 5 mums/couples who will inevitably have to pay a bit more, or bigger groups 10+. who won't receive quite the same amount of attention from you but who will be paying less per class )
-your overheads (how much will you be having to pay guest speakers, will you be providing participants with any materials, such as handouts, how much will you be taxed on these earnings) Then think carefully about how much you feel your time as a professional is worth (if you were to walk away with £50 after each session would that be enough or would it feel like an awful lot of hard work and hassle for not a lot of financial reward). Pricing yourself too high will, of course, put some people off but going too low tends to give out signals that you're not very professional. Personally, given that this is essentially a course you only do once in your lifetime, I'd be okay with paying around £150 for 5 lessons in a smallish group (5-8 mums). Best of luck with your new venture

We've paid £220 for 18 hours of NCT. They tried sticking £40 membership on top but I took that off. It's a lot but the only other choice was BabyMatters (Berkshire) which was pretty much the same price if not more and the dates weren't as good for us

Good Luck

Thank you so very much for all your responses.
Emsyi I thought if I can put my first sessions profit towards a hypnobirthing course and I receive enough interest then I will do this also.
Thanks again
