Woke up with back pain / sciatica this morning (still first tri so not bump related). Normally I'd pop a couple of ibuprofen or have a nice hot bath - both off the menu. Any suggestions?!?

Talk to your GP! I had a slipped disc while pregnant with DS2. Awful pain, numbness, tingling. I was prescribed cocodamol as being safe in pregnancy and it was the only thing to give me any relief. Hope it improves for you soon - back pain is miserable Hmm

Try and get a referral to antenatal physio and they'll give you some exercises and stretches that'll help.

Go for a gentle swim Grin

Hot water bottle on your back and paracetamol should take the edge off the pain.

I'm 8+3 and for the last 6 days I've had excruciating lower back pain. I've been taking paracetamol and using a hot water bottle on my back but it barely touches it. I'm at a total loss as to what to do and have had several melt downs today because of the pain....

I've got my booking Appt tomorrow so was going to ask the midwife. If I find a magic cure I will let you know!

Seeing an osteopath is likely to be much quicker than waiting for an NHS physio referral to go through. You can get good, firm braces and supports online these days and also have a look at pelvic partnership.

I have been to see osteo which was good.

Also could try a oat pack (the things you warm up in microwave) for back as is gentler than hot water bottle if concerned about heat for the baby.

Probably warm enough bath to help with pain is Ok just not boiling hot!

Osteopath also said a cold compress type thing would help with pain.

Paracetamol good alternative to ibuprofen as this really does need to be avoided. Thing you can get prescription for codeine if you have really bad pain (though I don'T know if it helps with back pain)

Thanks all - pain seems to have eased at the moment. I do occasionally get back niggles that resolve themselves and self-medication is all I've ever needed. I'll get a hot water bottle or similar to help, that is a good idea.
