'My goodness, you're big!' at 23 weeks

Yesterday I went into hospital because of a very nasty chest infection, but that's beside the point. Whilst in there I had the delight of being told by every nurse around (one of them thought it would be a nice talking point and shared her thoughts anyone nearby) that I'm looking very big for 23 weeks. The triage nurse actually wrote down 35 weeks on my notes!

I'm not a big person, I'm 5'4" and size 8 before the spread started, and I haven't been gorging myself on iced buns and chips for 5 months. Does this mean I'm going to have the world's largest baby? How will he get out of here?! I'm not very big anywhere else...(although I may struggle to see over my boobs soon, need a periscope.) Feel a bit embarrassed about myself now. Blush

Ignore!!!

It seems everyone has an opinion on this one way or another.

DD was 6lb 9. I had a neat ish bump but big enough.

With DS work colleagues commented daily on how huge I was, yet my midwives repeatedly told me to expect another smallish baby based on the size of my bump.

He was 7lb 11.

Just nod and let it go over your head. Enjoy your pregnancy & congratulations

Rude cow!

Similar to you, I'm 5'3 and was a size 10 and everyone has delighted in telling me how big I am since about 16 weeks.
If I hear 'are you sure it's not twins?!' once more, Pregzilla will go on the rampage... What do they expect us to do? Start a uterus reducing diet?!

But, I've evened out a bit at 26 weeks and someone on here suggested I tell the next person that I'm so big because I ate the last rude fucker who took it upon themselves to comment on my bump size...

People just make small talk. They'll do it when your baby is out too (re baby size, not you!). No one has a clue.

I got lots of people telling me I was 'all bump' or 'neat' which made me Hmm when I'd just been told baby was small for dates (scan showed not!). Then baby shifted & everyone said. 'You've grown!'. Just wanted to tell them to get lost rather than listen to endless comments on my body shape.

dizhin79 · 04/01/2014 21:55

you may hate me for saying this but I have the opposite problem, I'm 5'10" and hardly showing at all, have had no sympathy and have had to explain to everyone that I've not just had a large dinner. I guess a happy medium would be nice wouldn't it?? Never satisfied are we!

dizhin79 · 04/01/2014 21:56

meant to add I'm 32 weeks Sad

Cookiepants · 04/01/2014 21:59

Please don't worry, I was huuuuggge (turning sideways to get through doors hugeGrin). Everybody told me I'd have a big baby / surprise twins and DS was born 7lb 5oz at 41 weeks.

I'm only 5'4" so height makes a big difference.

EeyoreIsh · 04/01/2014 22:02

height makes a real difference, I'm tall and measuring small for dates. midwives aren't worried as there's more space for baby to stretch up before going out.

It is bloody annoying having the comments though. everyone has an opinion Angry

EeyoreIsh · 04/01/2014 22:02

hope your chat infection gets better soonThanks

EeyoreIsh · 04/01/2014 22:02

Gah, chest infection, sorry Blush

Wombleloz · 04/01/2014 22:21

Thank you ladies, you put a smile on my face! I hope I even out and will attempt the cannibal one liner if it happens again!

Dizhin, I don't hate you, I'd be just as anxious if I were in your shoes. I hope the bulge fairy comes your way soon.

Glad there's no hate, am measuring fine for dates so no anxiety. It's just a proportionality (hope that's a word) thing! more room for little one to move upwards target than outwards.

comments and patting are just a cross I fear we have to bear!

AlwaysDancing1234 · 05/01/2014 11:35

I'm nearly 16 weeks with DC2 and already have a bump which people have commented on. Comments like "ooh it must be twins or triplets" is especially upsetting when we started off with twins but lost one baby early on.
I was tiny with DC1 until 20 weeks when my bump seemed to expand rapidly and I was enormous by the end (think 'beach ball up the jumper' shape). People never tire of commenting in bump/boob/body shape so just learn to ignore them!!

Tea1Sugar · 05/01/2014 17:38

I'm 24+5 with dc2, a pre-pregnancy 8 stone and 5'4. I have a huge basketball under my top. If one more person thinks it's ok to ask if it's twins or compare me to my 33week first timer pregnant colleague I'll hit them. Hard.

MrsPatMustard · 05/01/2014 19:24

Ignore them. I had SO many people say this to me during the second trimester! (Including a colleague who told me I was having a 10lb baby.) I used to end up in floods of tears.

Not everybody grows at a steady/regular rate during pregnancy. I had a a couple of big growth spurts but then it all evened out later on. Am now 37 weeks and the baby is measuring bang on average for its gestation period.

Also not everyone carries the same way, some women (like me) carry very out front and prominent, others carry much flatter and across the hips.

Cariad007 · 05/01/2014 19:55

There's one woman at work who repeatedly tells me I'm showing/big, even though I've told her I don't like people commenting on my body. I go back tomorrow after the Xmas break and even though I know I've not got any bigger since before Xmas I know she will have something to say. I might counter it with "yeah? Well I still weigh less than you love!"

Firsttimemumtobe12 · 05/01/2014 22:30

I'm the opposite also. 33weeks and I look like I'm only about 3-4 months pregnant. I don't mind much but it's when people think that just because I'm small that I have an easier pregnancy...I still get the backaches and sleepless nights and kicks in the ribs but because I'm not as big as others it's not half as bad... Rubbish it bloody well kills!
Can't wait for my little one to be out, safe to say I've not really enjoyed being pregnant just want him in my arms now!
