That's awful, spook. Sorry to hear it.

tamum · 24/07/2006 18:31

I'm really sorry spook, how awful

soapbox · 24/07/2006 18:35

Spook - I'm so sorry that you have had a molar. Do you know whether it is a complete or partial molar yet?

I had a complete molar in 2001. You'd better get used to the idea of hospitals for a bit longer. You will have to have an evacuation of the womb, which is okay - you might be lucky and get it done in day surgery.

Then you have regular monitoring, usually via a postal service to one of the centres of excellence in Sheffield and London. These last up to 6 months with bloods at first then falling back to urine testing after the first couple of months.

It was a total pain when it was bloods monitoring as you have to go to hospital to get the bloods done, and there is a certain way they must be taken and dealt with, which the hospital needs to be reminded of everytime. I ended walking the sample to pathology myself each time and giving them the same instructions every time I went!

Other than that, your HCG levels should start to fall quite quickly after the evacuation, and should be more or less normal within 6 weeks. I found those early weeks hard as the hormones were still stratospherically high with all the mood swings that brings, and I'd lost the pregnancy too!

Just try and take things easy for a while. And do let me know if there are any questions you want answers to - I'll do my best to help

This is a good website - link{urldescription \charing cross hospital patient support}

oh bum! try this!!

spook · 24/07/2006 21:03

Oh hi Soapbox.
Its a complete molar. I'm sorry you went through this. Its so shit and so unheard of. I have had to try and explain it to everyone today.
I am supposed to be off to Ibiza with the boys on the 5th for 3 weeks. Suppose thats out of the question now?? What on earth will I tell them poor little fellas.
Thanks for that link. Have seen the word chemo bandied around and it puts the fear of God into me. My brother starts chemo soon. What a family!!!
I am incredibly teary and I suppose that must be the hormones. If in doubt blame the hormones-I find that always works!!
Thanks everyone else for you messages. As always Mumsnet is there for the old Spookster!! XXXX

I know spook, it is really really scary at first

But only a small fraction go onto develop cancer and of those there is an incredibly high survival rate - the close monitoring program really has completely changed the fortunes of those who might go onto develop cancer.

If you have the surgery sometime in the next few days, I can't see why you couldn;t go to Ibiza. You should probably ring the hospital you will be attached to, and ask them when the first bloods need to be done after the evacuation - that way you'll know whether you can go away.

Physically I was fine within a few hours of the surgery - so it really is only a question of finding out when you need to get the bloods done. You may even be able to pay for them to be taken in Ibiza and couriered over here.

TBH I wouldn't even bother to talk to the normal consultants and docs - they only see a molar once every blue moon, and frankly haven;t a clue. OTOH, the specialist unit i was attached to was fantastic - the nurse there used to run a telephone hotline and answer any questions straight away! Very reassuring when you;ve just been diagnosed

There is a good yahoo group as well for molars, but it is pretty US dominated and their program is slightly different.
