Monitors

Hi, we have bought most of our baby stuff now but still need to buy a monitor and I have no idea which one to get. Do we need a video monitor or an Angel Care one with the movement sensor or just a bog standard one?

I'm thinking about getting the Angel Care one but I'm worried about false alarms, think that would give me a heart attack! Does anyone have one? Are they worth it?

Thanks for any advice.

You don't need to get any particular monitor. It's your choice really!

I have an angel care. When DS was in his crib we never had a false alarm ever. It went off when I took him out to BF and forgot to switch it off but that's it.

In his cot bed it has gone off a couple of times when he has been down the wrong end and up against the bars.

For me it gave the piece of mind that if there was a problem I would know straight away. I am not under the impression that I could 'save' him if there was a problem, I just needed the piece of mind that any problem wouldn't be undiscovered until the morning.

If I were to choose again I would the get the angel care that is also a video monitor. Now he's bigger I want to see what the little bugger is up to!

We have an tommy one,, which is like the angel care.

I put DD in her own room at 4 weeks as the constant snuffling and noise from her when sleeping was keeping me awake and I was slowly going crazy.

The monitor gave me immense peace of mind especially as I knew I was flying in the face of all the SIDS advice (it was either that or go mad!) It went off once when after we changed the sheets and forgot to check the position.

We stopped using it when she became more mobile in her cot at about 4 months. It kept going off because she had rolled about and moved off its sensor area.

A friend of mine bought the camera one as her DS was a terribly light sleeper and would wake if they went anywhere near his room at night. She loves it.

Cost wise there is not much in them really.

I got an angel care one though not used yet as bump not due for another 5 days :) Check out eBay for bargains,I got mine for under £40 compared to over £100 brand new and its in perfect condition.

I have an Angelcare and used it with the mat for about 5 months. After that it is still a really nice monitor with decent night light.

I am planning to use it for no 2 in Feb so they are good quality and will last.

We had a Angel Care one initially. Was a v quick route to madness and the interference was dreadful.

I've never used a monitor with my DC - my sister walking around with one glued to her ear for years every time her kids slept put me off! My alternative wasn't much better tho - I'm guilty of repeatedly checking my babies and waking them up as I can't resist leaning in for a kiss, or rearraginging blankets. I still do it and they are 6 and 4. I'm hoping I'll find some self restraint before DC3 arrives but I doubt it! Xmas Grin

I was all set to get an angel are sound and movement monitor without video, but over Christmas I was convinced that a video one was better because it would mean I wouldn't unnecessarily check on baby and wake him/her up. Both my sister and sister in law suggested it, with them having used sound and movement for their first babies and video for their second. I've now got a Motorola video monitor in our baby drawer Smile

Foxeym · 02/01/2014 08:49

I'm on DC3 and also have never had a monitor, DC3 is sleeps in his cot beside us so we hear him and he sleeps downstairs in the day. Same as above my sister had a monitor and was up and down all night to every little noise

AnythingNotEverything · 02/01/2014 08:52

You don't need one yet. This is something I would leave at least until baby is here.

Baby will be in your room for a while so you'd hear them, and SIDS guidance is that all naps should be taken in the same room as you until 6 months. You may move them into their own room sooner, but that's a good time to get a monitor.

An angelcare would drive me potty. Also, wasn't there a recall recently?

DD is 10 weeks, and I can't think of an occasion when I would have used a monitor so far. I might get one when she starts to go up to her cot for naps, but we're a while off that yet.

Had you spotted that MN has a topic about monitors?

It might be helpful to have a look at the threads there

LittleBearPad · 02/01/2014 09:08

We didn't get one until dd went into her own room at 6 months. Thrn we got a motorola video one. Very helpful for working out how awake she is in the morning. When she stands up we admit we need to get up.

Christelle2207 · 02/01/2014 10:41

You

Christelle2207 · 02/01/2014 10:46

We didn't use anything until DS was in his own room (11weeks ish). We now have a Motorola video monitor and also an anglecare movement monitor. Dh thinks the anglecare is OTT but it gives me the reassurance I need. Never had a false alarm it has just gone off a few times when we took Ds out of the cot without remembering to flick the switch on the monitor.
I found the video excellent to see what baby was doing before rushing in (quite often would just resettle himself).
I rely on both so much I hate it when I stay at my mother's because I don't take them with me! (Setup slightly faffy)

Christelle2207 · 02/01/2014 10:48

The recall for anglecare was for the US only- I looked into it and was basically to do with how you arrange the cords which isn't an issue if done as per the instructions.

Reiltin · 02/01/2014 10:50

We have a bt one, which is great. Careful of the Angelcare ones - they've just had a recall due to strangulations. Check out their website before you buy one.

MrsSpencerReid · 02/01/2014 10:54

We have a video one which is great as now ds is a bit older we can check he is asleep without going in the room as if he see's us he thinks its getting up time!! Prob doesn't matter as much when they are tinySmile

Wilberforce2 · 02/01/2014 21:03

Thank you for all of the replies, think we will probably go with the Angel Care one as I'm such a worrier so it will give me some peace of mind although she will be in with me for a while so I won't need one yet (am 34 weeks).

Thanks again.
