Hip pain at night

I'm 23 and for the past week I've been woken up in the night with really bad hip pain.
I normally sleep on my tummy but I've been sleeping on my side since I've had a bump.
It's like a really bad growing pain all across my hips and pelvis. I've got a pregnancy pillow and have tried putting pillows in between my legs but nothing seems to work - help!

I get this. Nothing helps except having the baby, IME!

Sadly have to agree with Souper. Your ligaments loosen up during pregnancy, and your joints get a little, well, out of joint! That's what causes the pain after longer stretches of sleeping on one side. I found that the only things that ease it a bit are -

  • rotating frequently
  • using a maternity pillow
  • invest in a good quality mattress/mattress topper

I'm on dc3 and have suffered hip pain with every pregnancy, my sister does recommend folding up a duvet and sleeping on that so it's softer. Will be giving that a go but am not holding out much hope. Turning regularly does help as does having the baby :) have never slept better than when all of mine were newborn, just think 3hrs solid sleep without hurting or needing a wee!! Roll on April :)

Yep, me too. Had it for about 9-10 weeks so far (31 weeks now). Did find that when I had a bad cold and had an extra pillow under my head, it was a bit easier, so going to see if that helps again, but otherwise, nothing else seems to help. You could try getting referred to a physio. Midwife did say she'd refer me to physio so going to ask for that at next appointment but don't think they do much, just give advice on exercises etc which might help a bit.

My midwife has suggested limiting walking, not sitting cross-legged and basically not stretching the hip bones further apart. I've definitely noticed that my hips hurt less the next day if I've been sitting around all day during the day before (not difficult to achieve over Christmas). Not the healthiest approach long-term so I've got a physio appointment in the new year and hopefully they'll be able to suggest something I can do.

Yep I have had this since very early in my pregnancy and still get it now I am 38 weeks. I can't seem to get rid of it completely but I have been using a mattress topper, folded single duvet under me and a couple of pillows to sit more upright and that has helped. I find If I sleep on one side too long it is worse. One of those annoying pregnancy symptoms unfortunately!

Agree with the duvet underneath! I'm 26 weeks and have the pillows etc but it was the hip that was making contact with the mattress that was hurting iykwim. So I folded up an old duvet and it has definitely eased the pain.

Agree with everyone with the duvets and pillows. I have a Snoozle (maternity slide sheet) and I love it. Think I'm gonna try acupuncture. My friend has PGP like me and she says it does more good than physiotherapy so I might give it a go even if it's expensive.

I have this too - Midwife said v common and in addition to the above just making sure you walk loads during the day can help. The pain does seem to be worse after lazy days so maybe there's something in the suggestion?
