Tips for swimming while pg?

VJONES1985 · 30/12/2013 21:15

Until I got pg I was a regular runner and sometimes used the gym. I know it's safe to run while pg but I just can't face it at the moment. I am 6+4 and really missing exercise so want to start swimming regularly instead.

Any tips for how to start and what to do? I'm not a very strong swimmer but think my fitness level should be quite good. Thanks.

Hi V
I abandoned swimming when pg with DC1 thanks to SPD (though it was really lovely to feel weightless in the pool before that point), and am yet to muster the energy with this pregnancy!
As I understand it, the advice is to avoid breast stroke as it's easier to strain your hip joints thanks to relaxin, and instead to stick to back stroke / front crawl.
I'd say just go for it - stick to the slow lane until you feel more confident!

I also swapped running for swimming when pg. however, I am a strong and confident swimmer, and I just did it. I tended to go to the "slow" rather than "fast" lane though when pg. When I was pg with my second child though, I only had a "window" to swim first thing, and swimming early in the day used to make me throw up. So I stuck to of Pilates and walked miles.

Thanks ladies. Think I will start off slow and steady and stop if I need to.

... With ds I swam my normal combo of 10 lentgths breast stroke, 10 front crawl for 70 lengths, 2 or 3 times a week until the day before he was born.

I regularly swam through both pregnancies and never did anything but breaststroke. Confused Hope my hips are alright!

BikeRun - 70 lengths is ambitious at the moment but you have inspired me to give it a go for as long as possible.

in my first pregnancy continued to swim about 100 lengths 3-4 times per week right until the end. had to avoid breast-stroke in the latter part of my pregnancy due to pelvic pain.

this time iv done bugger all Blush

So I just need to be careful of overdoing it? I mean, pushing myself too hard and getting breathless or overly fatigued?

My tip is to not let your pregnancy brain go mad, causing you to remove your towel AND you bikini bottoms! Grin There was a fantastic thread where a MNer had done this, it was hysterical, but quite embarrassing for her! Grin Grin

I could still do 20 lengths by my due date with my boys and I am very overweight and not fit, so you will be fine.

Philoslothy · 30/12/2013 22:35

I swim every day and am currently running every other day - am about 24 weeks pregnant,

I have just started a thread as DH has some cemcerns.

Philoslothy · 30/12/2013 22:35

I swam through all my pregnancies 80 lengths or for a good hour about three times a week, I slowed down a bit if I felt tired but I loved swimming, need to get back into it really.

icklekid · 31/12/2013 03:32

I need motivation advice! Used to run but ms put a stop to that -being in the bath is one of few places feel better so imagine swimming would help but just need to get myself there!

LittleH78 · 31/12/2013 18:14

I've swam throughout my pregnancy(currently 40+4) and only stopped (literally on my due date) when I suddenly wondered whether anyone would be able to see if my waters broke while I was in the pool! Came to the conclusion it was just like the rest of the world having a wee in there but haven't gone back since, just in case.

Number of lengths decreased dramatically towards the end but it felt nice just slowly walking up and down and having weight of the bump being held by the water. Local pool also quite warm so bump loved it and often had a good old squirm too.

I'm sure I was told breast stroke was fine (and I can't do any other strokes so it had to be!)
