i was sorted yesterday. I got about 20 little vests for baby when they are born in 0-3 months size. Short sleeve, no legs.
Im going for basic, on the basis that baby is going to be sick etc. All over them.
And now i find that those arent all baby will need? Or is it? Does baby need something else over these with longer sleeves and longer legs? And how would they fit?
Could i not use these vests on a day to day basis and use blankets and other layers? Or am i really needing to go and buy more baby basics? Baby is being born in may.
What does baby wear?
(and i havemt even got started on other things.. Its a whole new world out there)

I think you'll need babygros and little hats. Babies get cold and will need their arms and legs and heads covered.

Bakerof3pudsxx · 30/12/2013 19:43

Basic is usually vest and sleepsuit (long sleeves and legs with feet)

I had a May baby. On a few occasions he wore just a short romper when was very hot but mainly stayed in best and sleepsuit

Bakerof3pudsxx · 30/12/2013 19:44

Vest not best

bonzo77 · 30/12/2013 19:46

You won't need 20. Take half back. Get 6 or so baby grows with arms and legs. Hats (controversial, I never used them once home from hospital), blankets. It's pretty early to be shopping for May, but I guess you're taking advantage of the sales!

Bakerof3pudsxx · 30/12/2013 19:48

I think the advice now with hats is only outside and def not to sleep in?

GuernseyTeddy · 30/12/2013 19:50

Erm...DS wears a vest and a babygrow - to bed with his grobag and thin blanket.

In the day he'll wear a vest, a long sleeved top, trousers, socks, and a jumper/hooded cardigan. This will be topped by a coat if we're going out.
But this is December.

He was born in the August heatwave - so he was wearing a vest, tiny chinos and a T-shirt.

Yes, take half back if you can (and get used to your washing machine being on all the time!), and get some babygrows too. The general rule of thumb is that babies wear one more layer than you are. In an average house a vest and babygrow will be about right. We even had to put DD in a cardigan as well sometimes as she wasn't a cuddly baby and spent a lot of time lying on her own on the floor!

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 30/12/2013 20:03

Babies don't need hats indoors as they can overheat. You'll need baby gros as well as vests. The general rule is one more layer than you have.

I'm not sure 20 is too many - I don't have a tumble dryer mind, and had Feb/March babies so not so warm for drying, and wasn't always that organised about getting loads of washing on. But with tiny babies, endless milk coming back up, and poo leaking from nappies and so on, we used lots of vests! Didn't need so many in the next size up once nappies fitted better (cloth nappies which were enormous on newborns) and we were more in control of life! Yes to babygrows on top, ones with inbuilt scratch mitts are good at first. Mine then wore cardies on top of babygrows during the day - but you might not need that in May.
Don't buy any bigger sizes though, or outfits, because you might get gifts (and I exchanged everything I could which I was given for bigger sizes...)

TransatlanticCityGirl · 30/12/2013 22:40

We had a July baby. Hardly ever used the hats. I think we had about 10 vests and 6 sleep suits which was more than adequate. She wasn't a sickie baby though.

DD was born in June, and she's a warm person anyway. For 2 weeks (when it was rather warm), she pretty much wore nothing except a nappy, sometimes a vest, and would scream otherwise. All the tiny clothes were barely worn. 0-3 months, however, much more useful. A PP said about generally one layer more than you is right, but I tend to go on one layer less with DD as she's always so much warmer than I am!

I'm not sure 20 vests is too many. Sometimes you'll use one a day, and other times it could be 3, 4 or 5! I'd probably go for 10 babygros for a May baby, assuming that you'll receive more as gifts. Again, sometimes you'll use one, sometimes more. In DD's case, it wasn't really sick that was the problem, it was explosive up the back shits! A couple of cardigans, for if it does get a bit nippy.

And YY to rompers, bit cooler than a babygro if it's warm and they fit longer because their feet stick out!

You can always buy more of something if you need it, but be wary of online shopping during night feeds Wink

Newborn clothes cover up to 10/11lbs so I would get a few sleep suits in that size too. DS was in nb until about 2 months old!

MrsRV · 31/12/2013 19:18

my 8lb 5 DD was in up to 7lb 8 babygrows & vests to start, then up to 10lb ones a few weeks later as they swamped her at first. 0-3 was well after that... DD2 is due in May so I'll be digging out all the t-shirt & sleeveless vests & some babygrows. buy a couple of cardigans & hats for trips out uf it gets a bit chilly.
