Pregnancy book recommendations?

Hello. I'm now 12 weeks and have decided I should invest in some sort of pregnancy/parenting book to start reading up on everything.

Does anyone have any recommendations for good books, I've looked in waterstones and there are just so many I want to get something good...but really don't want to waste my money.

What have you all been reading or what do you think is a good investment?

Thank you xxx

I only had one but I really liked it, 'what to expect when you're expecting' I also had an app called 'Sprout'.
Congratulations!

I loved what to expect too.

I then got a bundle in the charity shop. It's worth mooching in there.

What to expect when you are expecting and then Baby Whisperer.

Ooh brilliant! I'm always worried about apps as I haven't made any Facebook announcements about the happy news and I always worry that everything is going to link to Facebook and give me away!!

I will give 'what to expect' a whirl, and have a good mooch about the charity shops too!

Thank you lovelies xxx

Have you thought about trying a local library? You can plonk yourself in an armchair for half an hour with a stack of books and skim read to see which ones you like the look of. You can then get them out of the library for a few weeks or make notes of titles and buy from Waterstones/Amazon/wherever when you know which ones suit you best.

have to admit im not a big fan of the books (especially after tolerating bunch of jobsworths in nct group who were incapable of wiping their arses without consulting gina or baby whisperer or some other holy grail lol) but your baby week by week was quite good, in general terms of knowing what to expect.

id really advise against getting too hung up by the books. following your instinct and picking up your babys own unique cues will make life easier and more fun [and you wont become an intolerable bore that times feeds and changes with an iphone ap lol. you think im joking.....]

Expecting Better by Emily Oster

I went to the local library and got out 'Your pregnancy week by week' by Dr Lesley Regan. It's very detailed and as shes a doctor she takes a more factual scientific approach which I prefer. The best bit is that I've had the book the whole of my pregnancy as no one else has tried to reserve it.

I've bought 'Your baby week by week' by Simone Cave and another person for after the baby has arrived. They've tried to strike a balance between the Gina Ford approach and attachment parenting which suits me.

A lot of it depends on what type of person you are so I agree that taking out books from the library first will save you pennies.

I've found the Dorling Kindersley 'The day-by-day pregnancy book' Editor Dr Maggie Blott very helpful. It's got a bit for after the birth but is primarily good for looking up niggly things throughout the whole of pregnancy and it's great for explaining where baby is developmentally week by week. Don't buy it from Mothercare though - I got it for half the price on Amazon.

Also really loved the Mumsnet pregnancy book for reassurance and funny stories!

I second the post above - 'The darling Kindersley day-by-day pregnancy book' is my favourite, my DH loves it too, bite-sized info and loads of pictures. Also have the mumsnet guide to pregnancy and What to Expect. Got them all on ebay for next to nothing, so would recommend looking there.

*Dorling, not darling!
