We have a Gabriel at school - it isn't shortened to Gay or Gabe (but he is only 7, so I don't know what would happen when he is a teenager).

I really like Raphael too - if I had another boy, I might try and get that past DH

i think any name can be turned into a nickname - good or bad...kids can be cruel.
however my dh is just as bad - the first time he met my mum he called her mrs green....she didn't get it until i explained she's called theresa and trees-are...green. he seems to make any name into something totally rude or stupid ! MEN !
