I wonder if any mums might be able to help me? I'm 12 weeks and looking to plan a couple of holidays before the baby arrives at the beginning of July. We're currently thinking of doing a proper two week long haul holiday in the next month or so and then a couple of short haul weekends later on. I can cope with the long haul as I've been quite lucky with symptoms so far and don't feel too bad. But I wonder, at what point in your pregnancy would you not have wanted to fly for a couple of hours for the weekend? I'm curious to find out (if possible) at what point I should start planning to swear off travelling. My consultant has given me the go ahead by the way, as I'm low risk. He says it's up to me. Any thoughts? Thank you!

Flew back from Hong Kong to UK at 34 weeks. Wanted to scream from claustrophobia about half way through the flight but other than that not too bad. Had flown the week before from Oz to HK which was fine.

I flew uk to Aus at 36wks gestation and I've honestly never had a worse 26hrs in my life! Confused To be fair, I was on crutches for severe spd, and suffered from HGD also but I doubt it would have been a barrel of laughs even in a straightforward pregnancy. I felt cramped, claustrophobic, sick and sore. The most frightening point was when I woke suddenly with excruciating back pain and diarrhea with 7hrs still to go and truly thought I had gone into labour, with hindsight I think it was caused by the leaning back position that a pp mentioned. The staff were as frightened as me! If I'd had any choice in the matter I wouldn't have made the journey but the decision was out of my hands. I wouldn't do it again!! GrinGrin

I had a UK break by train at 30 Weeks. Ended up in a remote maternity department having a blood treat for pre-eclampsia because travelling had triggered lots for makers. I was fine but it didn't make for a relaxing trip.

I've flown London Sydney @ 12/16 weeks, no problems.

I went by train to south of France at 34 weeks (& a toddler). Physically fine if exhausting. I was worried about what would happen if I went into labour - my French is ok but never used gynaecology vocab! Also accommodation for husband, and me & baby until well enough to travel home; worried if complications meant we had to stay ages etc etc. and insurance etc.

I was pleased to make it home undelivered of baby! Wouldn't have wanted to be further away.

Another insurance note - even if you have separate insurance for your baby, this sometimes only kicks in after the baby's due date. I had to specifically ask (and pay) for my insurance to cover the baby's costs if it was born early.

Perhaps take copies of important documents with you too. You might need these to get homeward travel documents for the baby if he/she did end up being born overseas.

I flew to Cuba with 1st child at 4/5 months - fine. Flew to Australia with both 2nd & 3rd pregnancies when I was 4/5 mnths, again absolutely fine (although would rather have left the toddlers at home!!). Also flew to Madeira with 3rd pregnancy for a week at 34 weeks. The airline said they needed a Dr.s note, which I got no problem but no-one ever asked to see it. Highly recommend having some you time before the onslaught!!
