Told normal range but fasting is above threshold for most countries and I am concerned.

Everyone in my family has type 2. EVERYONE. Mum, dad, aunties, uncles etc. Last time my fasting was 1.2... but I did have BMI of 28 this time as hadn't lost baby weight.

Doesn't make sense second test so low but I gather usually it's the fasting glucose most important?

I just don't want baby to be at risk.

They're both perfectly normal, working.

1.2 is very, very low. abnormally so.

working9while5 · 28/12/2013 22:29

Why is it 5.1 in Australia, Ireland etc do you know?

I don't know why different countries follow different protocols. It really makes no sense. I'm also from a family rife with T2 diabetes, and sure enough, I have GD with my second pregnancy.

The fasting reading here in the US is 90 (5.0). My fasting is always around 5.6, which I suspect in some countries wouldn't even merit a diagnosis.

1.2 would be so hypo, you would be unlikely to be conscious. Are you sure that was right?

  1. 1 fasting is the new criteria for gestational diabetes (supposed to be worldwide but not adopted everywhere due to cost). Also over 10.0 at 1 hr or 8.5 at 2 hrs (only need one of three to make the diagnosis). We do diagnose and treat gdm with a fasting of 5.1 many of whom will need tablets or insulin during their pregnancy.

No not sure just had it as figure in my head. 2.1? They mentioned it as being low at time, asked if I was ever faint.

Blonderunner where are you based? You sound like a professional what would you do if me, self-test/dietician etc? Private growth scan?

My last ds2 was 9lbs 3oz and I don't really want this one to end up huge... also my others were both 'overcooked' and I don't want to be overdue as I understand risks higher.

I was reading about it in Australia last night and apparently treating from 5.1 lowers risks to baby. I'd like to take a sensible approach as I guess if borderline I could manage via lifestyle change?

Based in Northern Ireland (so still uk). It's difficult if your unit are still using the old criteria as they will take your test as being normal. A growth scan is an excellent idea and if 90th centile or above its worth getting them to either repeat the gtt or allow you to monitor your blood sugar and then decide if you need treatment esp with your family history and baby size.

Thanks Blonderunner. I am Irish (ROI) which is what alerted me to it as friend had dx with lower fasting sugars than mine. I just don't want unnecessary risks really... especially around post-dates etc.

When is best time for scan?
