Telling your employer that you're pregnancy

Hi, I'm new round here :-) Wondered if I could get some advice?

I started a new job at the beginning of November and I'm on a three month probation period. I've recently discovered we are expecting a baby and it seems I fell pregnant shortly before starting my job. I've had terrible sickness which so far I've hidden from my employer however it's becoming increasingly difficult to conceal.

I have a midwife appointment and a scan coming up and I'm running out of excuses why I need to take time off (and I'm an awful liar) Should I tell my employer and hope they don't give me the boot or do I try and keep it quiet until I find out I'm (hopefully) being kept on?

I'm pretty clued up on employment law and I know how they could get rid of me should they wish to. I just feel rubbish for not telling my lovely boss. I'm almost certain he'd be fine with it all but I'm worried about HR getting involved.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :-)

Personally I would keep quiet and think of good excuses to take time off. Once you are through your probation it makes it a little more difficult (not impossible) to get rid of you especially when pregnant.

Put yourself first, especially if you need a job and not the added stress of finding another while pregnant.

Your pregnancy is your business not theirs right now, you are not obliged to tell them yet unless your job puts you at any risk.

Everyones opinions will vary on this, but i would say put yourself first Smile
Good luck!

Keep quiet!

I start a new job in a week or so and will be 10 weeks pregnant I'm terrified of telling them!! I applied for the job before I knew I was pregnant though quite worried really!

If you do tell them, put it in writing, don't just tell them verbally.
If you don't tell but they guess and discriminate, they can deny knowing. That's why putting it in writing can be a good idea.
I recommend these people for advice:

Also, there's no such thing anymore as a probation period, so they can get rid of you relatively easily until you've 2 yrs service. Discrimination, however, is illegal and therefore you're actually probably better telling them sooner rather than later because as someone mentioned, if they suspect & choose to get rid of you, they can deny any knowledge & therefore discrimination doesn't apply. [Disclaimer: I'm not an employment lawyer!]

Honesty goes a long way in my eyes! Personally I would take your boss to one side and tell him and explain that your a little worried as you don't want to lose your job also agree with above give notice in writing so you have something to back you up if they do be funny. Youll probably find your worrying about nothing, and
If it's getting you worked up by them not knowing it might help you just to get it over and done with. Good luck and hope all goes well for you

I wouldn't tell them. You don't legally have to say anything till 20 weeks I don't think xxxx

Keep it to yourself and try not to feel bad for not sharing the news just yet.
