Protein & Glucose in urine tests - any advice please?

I'm nearly 35 weeks pregnant - at my antenatal appt today my urine showed protein & a trace of glucose. My midwife didn't seem unduly concerned - said the protein could be a urine infection, and the glucose could be diabetes related. She's sending the sample off to check for urine infection but says they only investigate further when glucose shows up twice in samples (and then they'll do a blood test). My next antenatal appt isn't for another two weeks so I'm panicking a bit now about all sorts of things, pre-eclampsia (even though my blood pressure is completely normal!), diabetes etc. By my next appt I will be nearly 37 weeks so by the time a blood test is done, it will probably too late to do anything about it. Am I being overanxious and paranoid? Please advise ...! Thanks.

I had glucose in my later samples.

Someone then realised that I was addicted to Lucozade in pregnancy, and they never bothered doing any other checks.

ds was an 8lb 3oz healthy bruiser.

Pip, even if you aren't seeing them for another two weeks, they'll get the results back much sooner. You could ring them to find out when that might be, and also to discuss with them whether they will call you in for further treatment (for the possible UTI).
If you have made it to 35 weeks with there being any previous sign of diabetes, I honestly don't think you need to worry about this now. You have to show more than a trace of glucose for it to be conclusively diabetes (been there, had the yucky drink and the bloodletting, was not diabetic).
In your place I would just want to make sure I didn't have a UTI and would chase that up. It's possible to have them in pregnancy and not get the usual symptoms of pain on urinating etc.
But no you are not being overanxious and paranoid! You are responsible for two people's wellbeing at the moment

Pip - the protein in your urine will most likely be an infection like your MW said. You only have to worry about pre-eclampsia if you have that and a sharp rise in your BP. I assume you've had blood tests throughout your pregnancy so they are probably not overly concerned about diabetes.... besides, like easy pointed out.... it could be down to a sweet tooth.

Thanks for your messages, I'm feeling more positive now! I'll chase up the results. As for the sweet tooth, well, I have to confess that I'm addicted to sweets and chocolate (and cake!) and eat them every day... BUT this is nothing new, I have done this for years and did the same throughout my last pregnancy (and delivered a healthy 8lb 8 oz son). The thought of having to cut out the sugary stuff is the stuff of nightmares...

If you are worried about gestational diabetes whilst waiting to see the midwife again, just try to balance your carbohydrate intake throughout the day ie no bingeing on sweets etc. just in case.

That way you won't be doing anything different than she'll expect from you if they diagnose it when you go back to see her again.

I was 'found out' at 35 weeks and had to follow a weightwatchers type diet for the remaining 5 weeks and record my blood levels 3 times a day. I was told this was for the good of the baby who would have been born with a glucose dependency otherwise. I probably wouldn't have taken much notice otherwise.

DD was also 8lb10 when she was born on her EDD and would only have been around 7lb without my diabetes! Trying to keep the baby's weight down is another incentive not to eat too many cakes!

In fact thinking about it, the midwife called me before my next appt because the test came back suggesting I needed further tests. So if there's anything amiss, they should contact you anyway.

I'm just 4 wks gone now with my second and am already dreading diabetes. I've spent the last 3 yrs since DD was born on and off w/watchers diets that I'm looking forward to relaxing food-wise!
